Name, Origin, and Story Born in Thrace, Zeus and Hera are the mother and father of Ares, God of war. Zeus failed to have a good relationship with Ares and wasn’t even concerned when his son went missing. Turns out, the twin giants, Otus and Ephialtes drove Ares mad by keeping him in a bronze jar, until Hermes was able to save him. In Greek Mythology, he is often characterized as a bearded warrior in armor or a young nude male with a helmet or a spear. The lack of physical characterization is the reason why it is often hard to identify him in classical art. During the Trojan War, Ares promised the gods, Athena and Hera that he would fight for the Achaeans, or Greeks. But soon, Ares took the side of the Trojans during the Trojan War under the influence of Aphrodite. He stopped fighting in the war when he was pierced by an arrow guided from Athena. When mentioned in Greek Mythology, Ares will often be humiliated.
Family Members Zeus and Hera were the mother and father to Ares. According to Homer in the Iliad and the Odyssey, both his parents weren’t very fond of him.

The God of the Sun, Helios spied Ares. He caught Ares and Aphrodite having a little bit too much fun. Helios later reported what he saw to the husband of Aphrodite, Hephaestus. Hephaestus crafted a mighty fine net that would snare the pair during their embrace. Hephaestus then invited the Gods of Olympus to what he has caught. The goddesses objected, but the gods commented that they would be willing to trade spots with Ares. After the couple was released, Ares fled to his homeland, Thrace. Aphrodite ran away to her homeland as well, Paphos. Later, Alectryon was assigned by Ares to warn him if Helios were to come. Alectryon fell asleep by the door and the pair was discovered once again. Ares, being furious, transformed Alectryon into a rooster. Because of this, roosters will now indicate the arrival of the
Hephaestus, the god that split his fathers head, "became very attracted to Athena." (Wickersham) Hephaestus tried to force Athena to bear his children. However, Athena being the powerful goddess she was, "resisted him and his seed fell to the ground." (Wickersham) From that seed Erichthanius was born "a half-man, half-snake." Athena put Erichthanius into a box and told two woman to "watch the box and not look inside." But the two woman looked inside and were driven mad, thus causing them to commit suicide. (Wickersham) So Athena took Erichthanius and watched over him herself. Erichthanius grew up to "have a great deal of respect for Athena and later became the king of her city, Athens" (Wickersham) Athena invented many things to help others. She came up with the "horse
As you can see, it seemed that Ares wasn’t really meant to happen. It was just one of the jealous actions of Hera. This being the case Zeus & Hera really didn’t bond so much with young Ares. In Fact, Zeus discovered Ares was missing but he really didn’t care. What happened was that Ares was abducted by two playmates, the Aloadai twins. They captured him and put him in a bronze jar. Ares stayed in the bronze jar, almost losing his mind, until the stepmother of the twins figured out what had happened and told Zeus' assistant, Hermes, who was able to release Ares from the jar. After all of that Hera thought it was good for Ares to be living with Priapus one of the minor gods, who should Ares the art of dancing and later on, martial arts.
In my thesis essay topic I will discuss how art in the Greek culture has change drastically since making it first appearance, in my essay topic I hope to showcase knowledgeable information on the subject while providing supporting details. This topic was interesting to me because beforehand even though I have taken many art classes, this class gave me a little more insight to the world of art and has influence my taste since traveling. I am amaze at how much Greek art has influence modern day culture. Greek culture has also paved the way for many other forms of culture forms and exhibits. So what did this essay mean to me? It was away for me to study and review what I thought was most significant about Greek times and the art pieces that stood out to me the most. I also like that I get to get my personal reflection on key pieces that lead to the new era of classical and non-classical art. In my essay, I will show how ancient Greece was a very unique culture that went through great efforts to produce high class art.
Ares and Aglaulus had a girl named Alkippe. According to myths Poseidon's son Halirrhothius raped Alkippe or tried to rape her. This made Ares extremely angry and he struck down and killed Halirrhothius. “He also upset the harmony of Olympus when he was accused of killing Poseidon’s son Halirrhothius near a stream below the Athenian acropolis” (Cartwright). Ares was later tried in court for murder this was the first trial in history and it took place in Athens. The other Olympian gods thought that Ares did nothing wrong so he paid no penalty. This myth show how Ares has no regard for life and didn't care if he killed someone.
Then Night produced Doom, Fate, Death, Sleep, Dreams, Nemesis, and other things that come to man out of the darkness. In the mean time Gaea gave birth to Uranus, which was the heavens. Uranus became Gaea’s mate. Together they made the three Cyclopes, the three Hecatoncheires, and twelve Titans. Uranus was a bad father and husband.
Ares was known for being a cruel god, and a bloodthirsty one at that (Alys 148). Most gods hated him, but Ares shared a special form of hatred between Athena and himself. They were both war gods, but each of them had a different view on war itself. As goddess of wisdom, Athena was a master strategist in battles, winning efficiently without much bloodshed. Ares on the other hand, used his brute strength and physical prowess to triumph in battle. He was not known for his brains, and because of that he was ridiculed frequently by Athena, who didn’t consider him strong or savvy. While Athena frequently won battles, Ares frequently lost. Strategy was never his strong suit, and it certainly wasn’t on his side (Hathaway 221). He was widely regarded as a weakling, and his frequent defeat certainly didn’t help out his image. Two sons of Poseidon known as Ephialtes and Otus overpowered Ares, and trapped him in a bronze jar,...

The older of the two, Ancient Greece was a civilization for three centuries, from 800 B.C. to 500 B.C. Ancient Greece advanced in art, poetry, and technology. More importantly, Ancient Greece was the age where the polis, or city-state, was invented. The polis was a defining feature in Greek political life for a few hundred years (Ancient Greece).
Athena is the greek goddess of wisdom, skill and warfare. She was regarded as the virgin patroness of the great city of Athens. Known for her immense intelligence and strategic thinking, as well as her caring and compassionate nature, Athena led many victories with few casulaties, a stark contrast to the war god, Ares. Despite both Ares and Athena being gods of war, the two had very different motives. Athena’s moral and military superiority to Ares is seen in the fact that she represented the intellectual and civilized side of war and the virtues of justice and skill, whereas Ares represented mere blood lust and violence. For example, Athena only participated in wars that defended the state and home from outside enemies. In battle, Athena exemplifies many of her traits. Her wisdom is utlized in methodical planning, her skill in battle leaving few casualities. Athena represents the perfect balance of intelligence and warfare grit.
In Homer's epic, The Iliad, Achilles is the central character and greatest warrior in the Trojan War. He is faced with several problems, but the main fight was between him and Agamemnon, the commander of the Achaean army. Greek soldiers fight to win kleos, which is the greek word for glory. When Agamemnon takes Achilles’ kleos, Achilles is forced to question his role in the war. He struggles with the shallow reason that the Achaean army is fighting and eventually goes against the authority he is under in order to fight for his own reasons. Achilles made the only choice possible after being left with a broken heart, cheated and betrayed.
Eris initiated the fight with Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite, which started the Trojan War. She asked who was more beautiful. Paris was the judge, and each goddess offered him a bribed. Hera offered him a kingship, Aphrodite offered marriage to Helen, and Athena offered him victory in war. Helen was the most beautiful women, so he chose Aphrodite. This decision started the Trojan War. Hera and Athena was on the side with the Greeks, and Aphrodite on the Trojans. Ares was Athena’s half-brother. They were war gods, but Ares was more violent while Athena involved skills over violence. They were sworn enemies because they both fought during the Trojan War, Athena with the Greeks, and Ares with the Trojans. While in battle, Athena wounded him. Ares
Throughout studying many myths, I came up with many new observations. Many questions came into my mind about these myths. Greek mythology takes us back to a time when people had a connection with nature and when nature played a major role in people’s lives. The religious beliefs of the people who wrote the myths are found in the background of these myths; however, they are not to be read like religious texts. The myths try to offer explanations of “how”, which makes us think deeply about the purpose of these myths and the questions they draw to our minds. According to the myths we studied in class, the world created the gods, not the other way around. The gods were always created in the image of man, which shows how much men were important in their society. Furthermore, many of these Greek myths show us the difference between the views of the Greek then and our view towards many aspects of the society, including nature. Monsters appear in Greek myths and have different representations and roles. Greek mythology reflects a view of the Greeks towards the world and how certain aspects of their lives are similar and different to modern society.
