Athena is the greek goddess of wisdom, skill and warfare. She was regarded as the virgin patroness of the great city of Athens. Known for her immense intelligence and strategic thinking, as well as her caring and compassionate nature, Athena led many victories with few casulaties, a stark contrast to the war god, Ares. Despite both Ares and Athena being gods of war, the two had very different motives. Athena’s moral and military superiority to Ares is seen in the fact that she represented the intellectual and civilized side of war and the virtues of justice and skill, whereas Ares represented mere blood lust and violence. For example, Athena only participated in wars that defended the state and home from outside enemies. In battle, Athena exemplifies many of her traits. While Metis was pregnant with Athena, Zeus heard of a prophecy that his first born son would live to overthrow the powerful Zeus. Determined to keep his power, Zeus swallowed Metis in hopes of keeping the prophecy from being fulfilled. Later, Zeus experienced a headache. Desperate for relief, Zeus called the craft god, Hephaestus, to bring his axe and pry the pain out of Zeus head.
