The grant proposal would bring a resource fair that would promote both mental and physical services. Educating people about mental health is important to change their perceptions and attitudes about people who suffer from mental illness. This would be achieved by spreading mental health awareness by reaching communities in the rural who are usually underserved. This will be very important in reducing stigma which is the number one deterrent of seeking mental health and also promoting mental health literacy in the general public. Problem Identification More than 80% of people who are suffering with mental health problems live in developing world (Basic Needs, 2017). Mental illness is common in Kenya, at least one in four Kenyans (11.5 million) …show more content…
It will also partner with traditional and faith healers who play an integral role in the mental health system. Kiambaa is an ideal location because Access Afya, a grass roots organization, recently built a micro-clinic. The resource fair will serve as a multi-faceted tool: to publicize mental health services, educate the community, understand the needs of the community, provide information and tools, fight against stigma, and develop community partnerships. The religious leaders will also serve to build trust and legitimacy to the …show more content…
First, Access Afya was selected due to its current work in Kenya. The organization utilizes technology to provide low cost, but high quality health to underserved communities. Their mission is to make affordable health services available to everyone. As of this year they have expanded into three new communities with three new micro clinics (Access Afya, 2017). Second, Africa Mental Health Foundation is solely focused on providing affordable and high quality mental services by partnering with multiple stakeholders. Partnering with the organization is important because it also trains mental health professionals to provide mental care to rural communities in Kenya. Third, Intra Health International was chosen because of their ongoing work in Kenya and their mission to ensure health workers are trained and supported to perform their jobs. Fourth, the Kiambaa County was selected because Kenya recently went through a process of devolution. According to Marangu et al, “there is recent evidence that Counties within Kenya are reassessing the needs of their jurisdiction and planning health services for those who have been neglected”( Marangu et al, 2014. P. 4). Fifth, UN foundation and Bill Melinda gates foundation were selected due to their work in improving access to health especially in Africa. Lastly, USAID was selected because it has operated in Kenya for many years and has been vital in healthcare
The three companies chosen for this evaluation range from a foundation whose entire existence is based on helping people to a corporation who is basically a monopoly for power in several U.S. states and whose #1 goal is profit.
Due to the endless efforts and research of certain foundations and individuals, the ideas and functions of mental health have improved significantly. The advancements made in the field are impressive and without them, humankind would not be the same. Yet then why do only fewer than eight million people who are in need of help seek treatment? National Mental Health Association, 2001. The history, stigmatization, and perception of mental illness are some of the many reasons behind that alarming statistic.... ...
Mental health disparities, “the power imbalances that impact practices influencing access, quality, and outcomes of behavioral health care, or a significant disparity in the overall rate of disease incidence, prevalence, morbidity, mortality, or survival rate in a specific group of people defined along racial and ethnic lines, as compared with the general population” (Safran, 2011). Although there are many mental health care dipartites, I’m going to focus on the impact of poverty and lack of attention given to mental health. By advocating for a prevention, promotion, and intervention related to mental health, will aid in minimizing mental health disparities. Not only is it important to advocate on a macro level, but it is important to educate
It has a vital role to play in enhancing and promoting good mental health by direct provision and referrals to other more specialized sectors (Barry, 2007). Due to shortage of mental health resources, primary healthcare should be the foundation of healthcare delivery and it may also be the only source of healthcare available for low income earners (Kakuma et al., 2011). The Mental Health and Poverty Projects in Mayuge, Uganda, and KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, through community collaborations, development and support of self-help groups were effective in addressing the treatment gap in low income stings (Petersen et al., 2011). For proper effectiveness, secondary-level mental health specialists must support primary health
Mental Health Funding Mental health is a subject a lot of people prefer not to talk about, which is a main reason that it is so underfunded. The severe underfunding affects not only the people suffering from mental illness, but also the government, the economy, and society as a whole. It is in the government's best interest to put more funding into mental health due to the health consequences on patients, including weight issues, drastic effects on bodily functions, and difficulties in pregnancy. As well as this

Stigma towards some of the mental health disorders among certain cultures and age groups(consulting psychiatrist for depression in older age groups), lack of knowledge in identifying psychiatric illnesses and risk of over or under diagnosing mental illness, are some of the major public health challenges in global mental health disease burden.
Mental health literacy, similar to health literacy, provides information about mental health disorders and how to aid their management, awareness, and prevention (Wei). There are two main stigmas seen in the mental health community: public stigma and self-stigma. Both of these stigmas are detrimental to the strides being made in the mental health community. Within ethnic minority communities and the mental health community, stigmatisms and misconceptions associated with mental illness negatively impact people who suffer from such issues. In order to prevent unnecessary deaths and tragic suicide attempts, minority communities and the mental health community must work together to raise awareness and destigmatize mental illness.

Access to health care in Ethiopia has left many people without proper health care and eventual death. Millions of people living in Ethiopia die because of the lack of access to the health care system; improving the access to the healthcare system in Ethiopia can prevent many of the deaths that occur, but doing so will pose a grueling and challenging task. According to Chaya (2012), poor health coverage is of particular concern in rural Ethiopia, where access to any type of modern health institution is limited at best (p. 1). If citizen of Ethiopia had more accessibility of the healthcare system more individuals could be taught how to practice safe health practices. In Ethiopia where HIV, and maternal and infant mortality rates are sky high, more education on the importance of using the healthcare system and makin...
The first grant proposal addressed the effects of meditation on life-span cognitional developmental processes. From my understanding, there is a strong connection to the mindset and self-awareness, as one chooses to mediate for their own reason. Based on the informed information, meditation is used to decrease stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle. The provided background information and predicted research study will help determine the pros and cons of the process, using the meditation techniques.
Mental disorders are rapidly becoming more common with each new generation born in the world. Currently, nearly one in two people suffer from some form of depression, anxiety, or other mental health problem at some point in their lives (Editor). With so many people suffering from their mental illnesses, steps have been taken in order to get help needed for these people but progress has been slow. In the medical world, hospitals are treating those with physical problems with more care than those with mental problems. Prescription drugs can only do so much helping the mentally ill go through their daily lives and more should be done to help those who need more than medicine to cope with their illness. Mental health should be considered just as important as physical health because of how advanced physical healing is, how the public reacts to those with mental illness, and due to the consequences that could happen if the illness is not correctly helped.
It is deeply alarming that ignoring mental health is systematically ignored as an important part of health promotion. This is shocking because, in theory, mental health is recognized as an important component of health, the close link between physical and mental health is recognized, and it is generally known that physical and mental health share many of the same social, environmental and economic components. We know that facilities dedicated to those with mental health problems are more vulnerable to the resources of physical diseases in many parts of the world, and it is essential that mental health promotion should not be equally affected
The purpose of this would be to help raise awareness for mental health, education on how to deal with mental illnesses both interpersonally and intrapersonally, and to remove the stigmatization around mental illnesses. Throughout history mental illnesses has received a negative connotation closely tied to violence and currently this stigma is still relevant.
Today, the numbers of people with mental health issues are considerably high. The problem increases the national and global social and economic burdens as governments try to find means of empowering the people with the issue and solve the problem. Today, one in five adults in the United States has a mental health problem (“Mental Health Facts,” 2016). “Mental Health Facts” (2016) also states that the adults that received mental health services are about 60%. Only 50% of the youth with mental health issues received mental health services in the previous year. Further, mental health issues are also related to drug use and addiction. Of all the mental illnesses and disorders, depression affects the most people and has the biggest burden globally. Due to the increasing burden and the gap in service utilization, the mental health policy seeks to address several factors. Some of the key issues to address include early diagnosis of mental disorders, provision of appropriate and adequate intervention a particular problem, education and counseling for the family members, and research to help reduce the numbers and reverse the trend. Another key area of focus is the use of mass media to create awareness about mental health issues and help clear the
