I have come to believe that being a talented writer is one those things that you are either born with or you're not. Similar to athletes who are born with the height and physique to be a basketball player compared to those who aren't fortunate enough and have to work harder to get the same results. I do realize that with enough practice anyone can be great at something. However I think its obvious that some are more blessed with the natural abilities to do certain things. I am unfortunately one of those who is not blessed enough to be born with the natural writing skills. I am the type that has to really work very hard to get minimal writing results. In this article I am going to discuss the challenges, skills I obtained, and what I have learned throughout my experience in Writing 1301.
I will be the first to admit during this course I faced some challenges. I came in on a high horse and left with my tail between my legs. I started off thinking I was a strong writer until I took my original diagnostic test. The score I received was not exactly an impressive one. The second time I took the test I once again thought that I would receive a high score, again i proved myself wrong. The score was a somewhat higher, but not by a large margin. This was a sign to me that I still have a lot of room for improvement, and I am far from being a great writer. So I need to keep working against the struggle.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was truly understanding what it was to rhetorically analyze an article. The easy part was reading it, writing a summary, and even choosing the rhetorical choices the author used. ...ntinue to work on after this writing course is; editing and revising my drafts. There were many times where I felt my essays or assignments were ready for submission, but the grades I received revealed that my papers indeed needed more revision and editing.
Now that it's at the end of the course. I would have to say I enjoyed the challenge of this course. I do realize this course should not have been as challenging as it was, but due to my severe struggle when it comes to writing it was very difficult at times for me. However at the end of the day this course has made me a better writer and reader. I learned many valuable lessons and adopted many tools I can take with me into my latter years of my studies. I do now believe that because of this course I have a better ability of analyzing text for tests and papers, which will make me well-rounded and better student.
An article that uses a lot of rhetorical devices is Shitty First Drafts by Anne Lamott. The speaker of this article is obviously Anne Lamott; the reader gets to understand her more after she shares some personal experiences. Lamott wants people to know that their first drafts are supposed to be shitty. This article is meant for college students who just finished their first draft and is looking for improvement. The purpose of this whole article is to inform you that your first draft is supposed to be horrible because no one can just pull an amazing paper from no where, not even the people who write for a living. Rhetorical Analysis Writers always write in different styles in order to attract readers. Every piece of writing has different types of rhetorical methods. For example, “If Technology Is Making Us Stupid, It’s Not Technology’s Fault,” there are different types of techniques used to appeal to writers. In parts of the essay it has logic which is known for using logos. The writer uses very strong emotions which is known as pathos.
Authors use rhetorical strategies to express themes in their writing. Different rhetorical strategies help convey different themes with varying degrees of effectiveness. One way to measure the effectiveness is to rhetorical analyze two pieces of writing to each other and see which is best.
Prior to taking English 1301 my method of writing simply involved writing the first thing that I felt made sense, this unorganized strategy resulted in essays with multiple grammatical errors that made absolutely no sense. As an English 1301 student, I am fortunate to have a professor who has mastered the art of writing. In assigning group work activities and the literary analysis of songs, I was able to learn from my professor, that writing is a process not a product. Working in a group divided the workload and gave us more time to observe each other 's paragraph, in doing so we were able to revise, edit and rewrite, this process taught me that a terrific paper is not an overnight miracle. Analyzing a musical selection was tremendously difficult for me; as a mediocre writer it took me a long time to grasp the concept; after continuously rereading and analyzing different lyrics for multiple meaning, I acquired the skill of reading between the lines, by simply taking the time out to ask questions and research information. Participating in these activities helped me understand writing as a process, and also encouraged me to work on my critical thinking
Several people have trouble writing college level essays and believe that they are unable to improve their writing skills. In “the Inspired Writer vs. The Real Writer,” Sarah Allen argues how no one is born naturally good at writing. Sarah Allen also states how even professional writers have trouble with the task of writing. Others, such as Lennie Irvin, agree. In Irvin’s article “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” states how there are misconceptions about writing. Furthermore, Mike Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer” shows ways on how one can improve their writing skills. My analysis over the development of my writing throughout this semester. I will assess many aspects of my experiences with English 1301 up to this point in the semester. I will explain the ways by which I have blossomed as a writer during this time. I will provide brief examples of my work to show what I am basing the evaluation of my writing on. What my conceptions of writing were, at the start of, the semester and compare it to what they are now. I will clarify how my work this semester reflects the concepts of writing and reading we have been working on and studying in class. I will tell about what and how particular reading assignments have been influential in my growth of creative ideas. Lastly, my interpretation of what it means to be a writer, and how my experiences this semester has influenced my opinion on writing.
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. Furthermore, this method is a critique of the assumed interaction between a speaker, text, or artifact and its intended audience. In contrast, a narrative criticism examines all facets of any rhetorical artifact for its form, structure, and pattern, treating it as a dramatic story that unfolds and reveals itself for a certain purpose. Additionally, narratives are primarily utilized as a cognitive instrument for comprehending significance.
In this course, I have acquired skills that have helped me improve my writing. For example, doing the rhetorical analysis and logical fallacies in class. The rhetorical analysis have helped my writing because I can identify the writing strategies and purpose of what the author is acknowledging his/her audience. The logical fallacies have helped me reason the valid or invalid in an argument. Additional, I can identify the logical fallacies in a writing. In class, we also discussed about the sentence core and the workshops. The sentence core exercise has made an impact in my writing, because my sentences were extremely long therefore, I am still working on minimizing my sentences and making them short and clear. When I started this class I thought I was somewhat alright writer. I understood the basics of writing and believed I knew how to write an entertaining piece. All of the papers we wrote showed me one of my weaknesses as a writer.
Since beginning this class I have found myself doing more research, so I can make the best paper I can. The more research and knowledge I gain about the topic, the better my papers have been. Before I started this semester I did enough to get by with my papers. This class has changed the way I go about my papers. I have been proofreading my papers more than I usually do and actually thinking deeper about my papers. By the end of this class, I would like to be confident in my literacy skills. I would like to improve in every aspect of literacy and this will make my papers much better.
When I started on this course I didn’t know what to expect. After reading the syllabus and looking at what was required from the course – I became very nervous and questioned how well I would do. I never saw myself as a strong writer so my lack of confidence just added to my apprehension. I knew I needed to work on my writing skills but I didn’t know what to expect or what I would get out of the course. I now know that my concerns were unfounded – when you have the clear understanding of your topic, which approach you are going to take and what points you are trying to make to your audience then writing seems less difficult.
