Statement of Purpose

My love for generating new knowledge and solving complex questions motivated me to pursue a career in scientific research. I spent my undergraduate education asking questions relating to neurodevelopmental and degenerative diseases and proposing ways to better understand related behaviors. The scarcity of treatments for such conditions invigorates my desire to investigate and find answers to complex questions in hopes of better understanding human neurological diseases. A degree in the complex field of neuroscience will expand upon my previous education in the fields of neuroscience, biology, and psychology and allow me to further understand the intricacies of the brain with a goal of investigating innovative ways of preventing, diagnosing, and treating disease.

The Scripps Research Institute’s Graduate Program presents a unique avenue to investigate human disease and better understand human behavior. I have directly witnessed the caliber of research done at Scripps and the dedication of its scientist to understanding and discovering treatments for disease. My current research centers on understanding how Nf1 modulates metabolic rate via neuronal effects on the Ras/PI3k/mTOR pathway. As a student at TSRI, I will have the opportunity continue growing as a researcher at Scripps, where the common goal is to achieve scientific excellence and improve the community through scientific discovery.
