Introduction As humans transitioned into an agricultural period, they began by breeding different traits of plants in hopes to achieve the best possible herbs or vegetables for food. These practices have continued to grow as scientific understanding of breeding and technology evolves, the methods of going about altering plants and animals have evolved as well. Scientists can now alter the DNA of a species without a problem. The possibility of these alterations in plants and crops for the world’s food supply raises a controversy. Genetically Modified Organisms better known as GMOs; are organisms such as plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from other organisms in ways that would not occur naturally. GMOs are used in the manufacture of pharmaceutical drugs, agriculture, research and other experimentations in the medical field. The old common way for breeding of organisms takes plenty of human involvement; GMO’s can be created more quickly and precisely. Agricultural scientists have been experimenting with our food for centuries, that’s why most of the food we eat today cannot be found in nature. Pesticides are a mixture of hazardous chemical substances which are used to eliminate insects or rats among other unwanted pests on food crops.When pesticides are applied to crops, the air and water get polluted. It is important to know that this is the same air and water animals and people breath and drink from. These chemicals are made to kill pests but are being applied to the food that will end up at their table. The Organic Solution One way to reduce exposure to chemicals can be reduced by peeling or avoiding conventional high pesticide grown produce and buying organic produce instead. Another way would be for people to grow their own fruits and vegetables. Organic grown products are the best choice for humans to consume. We, as human beings and consumers are the only ones in power of what we put in our body. Organic farmers use quality food, water and healthy pastures, to make sure animals grow at their own natural pace, instead of using artificial growth hormones which give rise to serious health problems. Organic products prices are sometimes twice as much as a “regular” or chemically treated products and althought times are rough and economically may not be able to afford to buy every item we eat organic we can try.
