An artist I really admire once said, “An animator is just an actor with a pencil”. This struck me because as much as I love animation and want to go into it, I never once thought of it that way until I heard it. The artist who said that is one of Disney’s most gifted illustrator, character designer, animator, and concept artist, Glen Keane. He will forever be one of my favorite artists because of how his work both influences and inspires my work as an aspiring artist. Using such organic line work he is able to create pieces that show years of experience behind, with nothing more than just a pencil.
Glen Keane’s work is so fluid and organic. To me has always seemed to embody everything that is amazing about 2D animation. Every time i watch
Some people may call him “The King”, Elvis Presley is a well-known musician who stepped out of the norm and created a different kind of music. Presley combined pop, country, gospel, and black R&B to create his musical style. Presley caught everyone’s attention with his dance moves and musical talent. Elvis Presley led the way for many musicians, and has impacted the lives of many people.
“I’m very involved with the whole line test thing. For me, when you’ve worked all day on an animation and that moment when you see the drawings move, that’s a really magic moment, and there is no sound to it. I also think that an animation without the constraints of spoken words is stronger. If you have to fit everything to the words, all the gestural movement revolves around the mouth. Without it, you are much freer to create true animation, to talk through animation itself. Animation modeled around the dialogue is like something, which has already been set in stone, there’s less scope for interpretation. I have always wanted the animators to bring something to it.”
Pete Seeger, an influential folk singer and songwriter, explored a new and powerful way to express his anti-war thoughts during the 1950s. Through his passionate singing and “banjo-picking”, he peacefully protested issues in the country. During his career, Seeger received support, but he also encountered opposition. Nevertheless, Seeger persevered and not only helped pave a permanent path into the future for folk music and its singers, but also ushered in political change that reflected a national movement toward peace.
There a few different types of animation, the first one, and hand-drawn 2D aka traditional animation. When using this technique, animators need to make at least 12 drawings on paper to get 1 second length of film. The pages together basically make a flip book to show the movements. Then they get scanned and put into the computer. The next kind is Digital 2D animation, which is just drawing the frames directly onto the computer using a pen tablet. This is commonly used for TV series. Digital 3D, is almost all done on the computer, getting textures, and animated movements in the software to cut the work load in half.
Whenever I am asked for an example of good animation I am hard pressed to choose amongst the abundance of my childhood, but should I be asked my favorite in a heartbeat I’ll replay, “AKRIA.” The vivid imagery and blast of color is sure to grab a young child’s attention as it did mine. However, the most notable aspect of this film was the amount of detail and the personality breathed into the characters. The director of AKRIA, Katsuhiro Otomo, and creator of the source manga has created a cult classic that influences many artist and cartoonist today, even having a Simpsons parody of the trailer made. (figure 1) Of course Katsuhiro didn’t appear from thin air.
When think about animation and cartoon, just come to mind many comical images. Random House Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary (2001) describes animation as giving life or spirit to something and the word cartoon as sketches or drawings similar to the ones we have seen in newspapers [3]. When these words are jointed to animated cartoon they mention to a “motion image containing sequence of pictures, each so little bit different that when filmed and run through a projector can see the images moving” (Random House, Inc., 2001, p. 82) [3]. Cartoons can be described as oldest form of animated cartoons, the traditional animation and the modern computerized animation technology [3]. Cartoon and animation have a great history
The concept of using human movement as a basis for animated characters is not new. In fact, it began as early as 1919 with Max Fleischer’s Koko the Clown. Max, having taken video footage of his brother Dave in a clown suit, used his invention, the Rotoscope, to trace the action of his animated character. Though this was very time consuming, it resulted in amazingly li...
Japanese animations originated in the early 20th century, and firstly by imitating western cartoons, but its distinctive style was then being continually developed and adopted. In 1963, the first widely popular Japanese animation was born, Astro Boy, a production of Osamu Tezuka, who is considered to be the father of modern Japanese animations. During this period, many original animations were created, and some of them like Doraemon are still producing and having influence up to today. Despite the simple drawing style and story line that animations in this period had, they started to create domestic influence in Japan. In the 1980s, Japanese animations became an indispensable part of Japan’s lives.... ...
During my childhood I wanted to be a doctor; my teens, a veterinarian. Now that I’m soon to finish high school, I’ve decided I want to be an animator. Animation has been around since the beginning of 1900s, there are a variety of animation styles which make it more interesting. Since I want to pursue a career in animation, I will start with a graphic design degree. It will help me start a foundation with drawing and using the software used by animators. Drawing is a necessity for animation. Though I’m bad at it, I finally have the motivation to practice. I love animation, and have a burning passion to start learning how to animate.
Animation opens up questions about the selves, bodies, objects, audiences, labor, and the meaning of life (Gershon "What Do We Talk about When We Talk About Animation.”) Animation is based on how deciders how their performance lays out, which is ones own responsibility, but the audience plays a large part in aiding in the performance of the animated character. Such as how a Catfish works off of how the person and people they are catfishing contribute to the Catfishes performance of their stories and actions. Gershon states that “Characters are often drawn and written as compilations of conventionalized markers, merely implying details and nuance, which encourages the audience to project an affective connection and various social complexities onto the character” , which regards that media ideologies come into place how the audience acknowledges the perforce of the character, and often times since people being catfished become emotionally attached to the Catfish, and continues with the creation of the character they want to believe is
It wouldn’t be a surprise if I were to start this essay by telling you that as a child, I spent most of my time drawing and loving it. It’s something that most of us start loving when we’re little, our appreciation for art starts out when we’re most curious and ignorant about our surroundings. As a little kid, I spent most of my time drawing cartoon characters and abnormal shapes that just seemed funny and original to me. As time progress, only a few of us maintain this type of appreciation for art and for some of us, it diverse into something else. After 5th grade, I forgot how to draw; however, I become more interested in video editing. During my 7th grade years, I started practicing video editing using video game footage with the help of some online friends. A video website called Vimeo is used by many video editors of different region, ready to express their style of editing. I was mainly motivated by them, not of one editor in particular, but they all had their own way of making their videos, their use of visual effects, sound track and sound effects, all made me feel as if I was part of the video itself. This lead to me wanting to improve my video editing skills, constantly searching for free tutorials on YouTube that gradually brought me to where I am today. I’m not saying that I’m an amazing video editor; however, compared to how I started, I would say it’s an impressive progress without any paid lessons.

Japanese animation, more commonly referred to as anime, or Japanimation, has somewhat different origins than western animation. Where animation developed to entertain European and American children through comedic exploits, anime was created to entertain wider audience groups. Indeed, one might find difficulty in characterizing all anime together; the Japanese have viewed animation as a medium of creation rather a form of entertainment limited in audience and expression. Anime is included in a group from which the United States has traditionally banned animation; specifically, anime is considered a form of creative expression, much as are literature, modern art, live-action films, and other arts. A man by the name of Osamu Tezuka first envisioned animation’s possibilities in Japan in the 1960s (Ledoux, 1). Tezuka realized the power animation could
Animation, like any other creative art, requires a successful animator to be: patient, talented, disciplined, and willing to work hard. Among the term animation are subcategories such as: character and effects. Character animation is the hardest, in that is requires the most skill. The animator must have a critical eye for every detail that goes into the final project. Character animation can also be broken up into its own subcategories such as: 2D, 3D, traditional, stop motion, and motion graphics. However, 2D and 3D are the most commonly pursued. Regardless if the project is generated by hand or by computer, the overall goal of the animator is to entertain. The animator must have both a clear concept of how to entertain the audience, and
