3.1 The history of Cartoon
When think about animation and cartoon, just come to mind many comical images. Random House Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary (2001) describes animation as giving life or spirit to something and the word cartoon as sketches or drawings similar to the ones we have seen in newspapers [3]. When these words are jointed to animated cartoon they mention to a “motion image containing sequence of pictures, each so little bit different that when filmed and run through a projector can see the images moving” (Random House, Inc., 2001, p. 82) [3]. But it did not popular until the 1860‘s when it was patented by inventers lived in England and America. The American creator, named that device as Zoetrope which means wheel of life (see figure 2) (Highton, 2002; Zoetrope, n.d.; Beckerman, 2003). [3]

The kinetoscope was a device created for movies to be watched as only one person through the window of a cabinet housing its components. First described by Thomas Edison in 1888 however was perfectly created by his employee William Kennedy Laurie Dickson around 1890. The kinetograph, an innovative motion picture camera also invented by the same persons (Kinetoscope, n.d.)[3].

The Praxinoscope (see figure 4) came after the Zoetrope and was designed in France by Charles-Émile Renaud (Crafton, 1993) [3]. Similar to the Zoetrope, it used strip of images positioned inside the surface of a spinning cylinder. It was a kind of projector different from the devices, which had emerged before, where could look only one person at a time at the films through a small hole. Alike to the nineteenth century lantern shows (Praxinoscope,n.d.)[3].The praxinoscope quickly got changed by the photographic film projector of the Lumière brothers, Louis Jean and Auguste Marie Louis Nicolas (Praxinoscope, n.d.)

There are many cartoons shift in to computerized cartooning, but others still use hand drawn animations, but with a tactful use of CGI. It is great to be able to save time and concentrate on additional essential details of the work which could not be done in the past, but the world need to remember where it created from and must be in touch with reality. Not like present, before 50 years ago the situation of the Mickey Mouse was sad. Having a mixture of both is the best way for do. Walt Disney has been making hand drawn and also CGI films at that time. Perhaps the reason is that they understand what their clients want. Cartoon animation is not only for children, it is for the parents and grandparents too. Hopefully companies will not much use their hand drawing departments but some have done and simply focus on CGI. A combination of both is needed. There might be the debate about all being digital and accessible on the internet and as a result they must do it with computers to save money and try and earn some money. First, it would probably help to start at the beginning of Saturday morning cartoons and give a history to find out how we got here. Saturday morning cartoons have been around since the 1950’s. Since many people who worked in radio knew that most kids programming does better on Saturday mornings than any other time. Like most television programming of this time most these cartoons seemed like radio programs with pictures and really didn’t utilize the medium. Nevertheless these cartoons were spearheading the way for future cartoons. This era gave birth to The Rocky and Bullwinkle and Popeye. The most popular cartoon, however, was Mighty Mouse Playhouse. The show had the ability to mix action with comedy, which seems to be the key to most good cartoons.

Computer Generated Imagery began with awkward and dull effects in the early 1980’s. The 1982 film “Tron” was a desperate attempt from Disney to jump on the CGI bandwagon and start a revolution in film making technologies (imdb.com). Although this film showed an attempt at something that had never been done before in the history of cinematics, it was weird and confusing. This broke the door down for other companies to start up and aid films in creating better and better effects that appealed to a larger market. Although the effects were not good in the early days, the general film going public was astonished by computer generated effects and flocked to the theaters to see these cheesy attempts to use basic technology that did not transfer well to the silver screen. It was not until later films like “Jurassic Park,” “Toy Story,” and “The Lord of the Rings” until CGI became a film making powerhouse and the killer application for high budget movies.
Cartoons are the one that young and old audience grew up with. The most popular cartoon of all time was called “Disney”. Though way back in the 1928, a short animated film introduces in black and white called “Streamboat Wilie” with a cartoon mouse named Mickey. However, in 1986 a Japanese animated film had been joined in the world of animation (a.k.a called “anime” in Japanese). Manga and anime have been around since the early 1900's and over the last forty-eight years anime has been a part of American television. Anime has been altered to fit the American ideal of a 'cartoon.' Oxford Dictionaries defines a cartoon as; a simple drawing showing the features of its subjects in a humorously exaggerated way. Japan has no equivalent and calling an anime a cartoon is insulting. Anime is not a simple cartoon. It is a creation that is more closely identified with animation, but with significant cultural differences. Manga and anime needs to be better understood and taken seriously.
Animations are a series of drawings, computer graphics, or photographs of objects, like puppets and models, which are different from each to create a variety of entertainment for the audiences. Animations are what brings excitement and mystery, hooking the audience in through interest. It is a form of some sort of “magic” where things that aren’t real but from the imagination comes to life in front of people who live these mundane, ordinary lives, adding color to the eyes and mind. The creators of such amazing arts and creation are animators.
Animation is a visual technique that creates the illusion of motion, rather than recording motion through live action. The technique is used mainly for motion pictures. Animation can be created by illustrators, filmmakers, video makers, and computer specialists. Animation is most popular in creating cartoon movies. Advertisers also employ animation to develop commercials for television. In addition, producers of instructional films may use animation to help explain a difficult idea or one that could not be shown in live action. Animation can also be combined with live action in a movie. Many animators continue to make many drawings by hand. Since the mid-1980's, however, computer assistance combined with hand-drawn animation has become standard in many movie studios. These methods created such feature-length animated films as The Lion King (1994) and The Prince of Egypt (1998).
In this chapter, it has shown a brief history of animation and how it started in the early days of animation. It also discussed about 2D in brief and 3D. Also the techniques applied in making of animation since early ages with the evolution of 2D to 3D animation.
When walking through an art museum, there are rarely paintings of caricatures on display. Though some artists have developed avant guarde or impressionist styles, these are not considered cartoons for the simple fact that they never were displayed on the silver screen. Yet paintings of Disney characters sell for thousands at auction if they are authentic. Disney separates itself from other animation studios with their signature style and tedious techniques, like traditional artists. Since Disney has been making animated films for years, it has become a huge part of American culture. Many people even classify the older, hand-drawn films to be moving works of art. On the other hand, animated TV shows from Japan known as Anime, are not considered to be works of art. Often starting as a comic like sterilization known as manga, anime has captured the hearts of millions of viewers. Like any art form, there are a variety of styles to choose from; ranging from breathtaking to humorous. Like the renaissance painters or even Disney, Anime itself has shared many of the same traits. However, the world over dismisses it as a childish pastime, rather than the art form that it is. Both Anime and Art are a culmination of style, cultural representation, and emotional expression.
Computer technology invades the film industry. The existence of computers have aided in the production of genres of film ranging from action movie special effects, to cartoon animation and claymation. Computer Generated Imagery, better known as CGI, assists filmmakers in many ways. An image can be made two-dimensional from a three-dimensional scene, camera angles can be altered to make a character seem larger and thus more important than its surrounding bodies, and colors can be brightened or neutralized, among other things (Parsons, Oja 1). Without the aid of computers, movies would not have the ability to be what they are today.
Computer Graphics is the bond between humans and computers. Computer graphics is a large field that branches into almost all fields of computer science; however its roots are young. Computer graphics has massively grown over the past 40 years and is now our primary means of communication with computer applications. Do to technological limitations in the 1950s, computer graphics began as a small, specialized field. The Whirlwind project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is marked as the origin of computer graphics (Machover 14).
Someone is seriously going to get hurt or worse. Turn on a television set and pick a channel at random; the odds are better than fifty-fifty that the program will expose children to violent material. Naturally kids are attracted to things that captures their attention. What was a major contribution to a fun childhood? Cartoons! Cartoons are very fun to watch and learn from. However, there is something that all cartoons have in common and that is hilarious violence.
