HUMAN A human being is an individual who consists of varying characteristics: social, emotional, rational, sexual, ethical, and spiritual. Through language, compassion, and caring, this distinctive life form learns to communicate, understand, and show support towards family, friends, their community, and other groups of involvement. Rationality is obtained through logical reasoning, creativity, responsibility, and intellect allowing one to make key life decisions. Needs of sexuality are fulfilled through intimacy, whereas a sense of belonging and search for personal satisfaction are fulfilled through ethical and/or spiritual achievement. It is my philosophy as a nurse that as a unique human being, each person undergoes different experiences in life, which in combination with their above mentioned characteristics, affect their biopsychosocial needs. Psychiatrist, George L. Engel, theorized the biopsychosocial model which states, “that biological, psychological, and social factors, all play a significant role in human functioning in the context of disease or illness.” Therefore, if their biopsychosocial needs are disrupted in any form, this individual will reach out for assistance in order to regain biopsychosocial balance. An individual’s health fluctuates throughout their life span, but must be maintained or balanced in order for personal life goal fulfillment to occur. Health can be determined on three levels: Biological, Psychological, and Social. If a person is biologically healthy, they remain free from disease. If a person is psychologically healthy, they remain free of illnesses such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, stress, or schizophrenia.
