I’m going to tap out and call this Genius Hour project a fail. My goal was to learn beginner-level French, through Duolingo on the Web, in two weeks to prove that language barriers should not discourage people from learning a new language. I thought I was prepared to practice once a day and take notes. I researched all of what I thought I needed. After all, I picked up Chinese easily in school, so why not French?
At first I tried Babbel instead of Duolingo. Babbel focuses on conversational language rather than starting from square one, which is exactly what Duolingo focuses on. I dumped Babbel in favor of Duolingo after the first lesson because I didn’t want to pay for each one. But after the project, I realize that I should have stuck with Babbel because I probably would have learned and retained more, as well as being able to have a natural conversation with a French speaker quicker.
I found myself repeating Duolingo

First, practice more than once a day. Throughout your day, you are busy. Working and thinking about other things. The last thing on your mind is remembering how to pronounce “Je suis un garçon” and the like. Secondly, take valuable notes. Write words and phrases more than once because the motion your hand makes helps the brain remember what it’s writing. Keep a notebook instead of a piece of paper because you’re less likely to lose it and start over, which I had to do. Looking back to seventh-grade, my Chinese teacher would have us write each word five times, and it’s not a coincidence how those are the words I remember best today. Thirdly, don’t learn two languages at the same time. Sounds silly. But Chinese is my sixth-hour class. Every day write, pronounce, and recognize characters, as well as learn grammatical structures that would be considered incorrect in English. I focus on that rather than writing a fancy hook on the bottom of the letter

Moreover, many tools were created in Quebec by governments to insure that they’re perceived threat to the French language would be stopped or slowed down. One of these tools is Bill 101. In 1977, Rene Levesque, implemented Bill 101 as a way of controlling the reduction in the use of French within Quebec. This Bill added many restrictions on the use o...
No matter what side of the spectrum a person may fall on, the history of the French language in Louisiana runs deep. It was introduced to this land in the eighteenth century as Europeans emigrated from France and the Acadian refugees ventured from Canada. French was Louisiana’s language. As mentioned earlier, efforts are being made to preserve the general French language and background of Louisiana ("Parlez-Vous? Some Louisiana Pupils Being Immersed in French Instruction", 2011). Louisiana currently has thirty schools that offer the French immersion program. CODOFIL is working diligently to increase the amount of schools that offer French immersion programs. It is crucial that these programs be implemented in order to maintain a unique and special characteristic of Louisiana ("Parlez-Vous? Some Louisiana Pupils Being Immersed in French Instruction").
Being a potential candidate of the National Honor Society is a distinction that I greatly honor. I wish to be a member of the prestigious group for the various benefits to myself, my school, and my community. A member of my family was a former member of the National Honor Society; he has mentioned many positive benefits of being a member and how being a member is beneficial to the community. Due to my exemplary qualities of a National Honor Society member, I am qualified to be part of the chapter.
In the movie A Beautiful Mind, the description of schizophrenia is shown in many accurate ways. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) states that the symptoms of this disease are delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, or unorganized or catatonic behavior. People with schizophrenia are also socially withdrawn and awkward when in contact with other people. These traits of the sickness are shown in detail throughout the movie by way of the character John Nash’s struggle with the disease. Nash is a very intelligent professor but believes he is working with the government to foil a Soviet attack plot. Nash eventually goes onto win a Nobel Prize for one of his theories. The movie shows the effects of schizophrenia on not only one man, but also on the friends and family of the ill individual. Treatment is discussed but not to any great length due to him ignoring the doctor’s orders on medication. Overall the movie shows some very prevalent traits of the disease in great detail during certain parts of the film.
The Roman and Chinese empire, once established, shared a number of common features as well as differences. For this reason, I picked these two empires for my essay. My focus for this essay is to differentiate between the Roman Empire and the Chinese Empire, also state the similarities that these two empires had or might have had. Main points that I will use to differentiate these two empires are religion, origins of empire, economics, and agriculture. Based on these four points I will be able to get an idea on how these two empires ruled, as well as see what made the Chinese and Roman Empire the wonderful and unique empire that they were.
Have you ever imagine if you can able to read and write a difference language that does not your first language? I am a Vietnamese immigrant student and I am studying in the college in U.S. When I first attended college in U.S, I had had a hard time of reading and writing English. I spent most my time during the first three years to learning English. From learning at the church, to going to every classes or courses at the college I could find out about, reading and writing were what I was doing. I have been doing many things such as work and school together since I arrived here, but studying English was the number one important things that I have to be good at and I still enjoy doing it at every opportunity I get.
Antisocial personality disorder is a personality disorder marked by a general pattern of disregard for a violation of other people’s rights. Explanations of antisocial personality disorder come from the psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, and biological models. As with many other personality disorders, psychodynamic theorists propose that this disorder starts with an absence of parental love during infancy leading to a lack of basic trust. In this view, the children that develop this disorder respond to early inadequacies by becoming emotionally distant, and they bond with others through use of power and destructiveness. Behavioral theorists have suggested that antisocial symptoms may be learned through modeling, or imitation. As evidence, they point to the higher rate of antisocial personality disorder found among the parents of people with this disorder. Other behaviorists suggest that some parent’s unintentionally teach antisocial behavior by regularly awarding a child’s aggressive behavior. The cognitive view says that people with this disorder hold attitudes that trivialize the importance of other people’s needs. Cognitive theorists also believe that these people have a genuine difficulty recognizing a point of view other than their own. Finally studies show that biological factors may play an important role in developing antisocial disorder. Researchers have found that antisocial people, particularly those with high impulse and aggression, display lower serotonin activity and has been linked this same activity with other studies as well.
Every time my parents read to me, I tried to say the words along with them. As a result, anytime I had problems pronouncing a word, my mother made me sound the word out until I sounded it correctly. She told me to take each word, syllable by syllable.
After reading this article I concluded the purpose of this article was to tell readers of how he triumphed learning French even though his teacher was malicious. While reading this article, the author describes how the teacher ridiculed and belittled the students when they spoke. Not wanting to be a victim he studied extra hard to learn faster. Through dedication and perseverance, he could understand the French language. Proving success can still be achieved when faced with obstacles.
Most of the time at school my lexicon is in English, I speak Spanish all the time at home.At times it is hard for me to switch my languages up because in Spanish we speak so quickly. My quick Spanish speaking always sticks to me and when speaking English I can slur a lot because of the speed in my voice. Adjusting the speed of my voice based on which language I am speaking is what I have been focusing on when communicating.
For this research requirement I chose three different experiments to examine thoroughly. The first of these experiments came from the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology. The study done in this journal was an examination of orthographic learning and self-teaching in a bilingual and biliterate context. The aim of the study was to figure out the advantages and/or disadvantages of a student learning a native language when they are either monolingual, bilingual, or biliterate, and the study was focused on learning English because this is the most commonly learned non-native language in the world.
Failure happens when something isn't successful. Failure is a thing that all people can learn from. Failures can be used as lessons so that the failure will not be repeated again. One of my greatest failures in life that I've experienced and learned from would be from the time of my first grade year. I didn’t take school seriously when I was in the first grade and made terrible grades. After this failure, it made change the outlook on school and I started trying. I learned that I need to take school serious or else I will do bad in school. This failure lead to success in school and I started making good grades which will help later on in life.
Your personality plays a huge role in how you learn a language. Students that are shy, introverts may struggle with acquisition, but may not struggle with learning language. Acquisition requires you to step out of your comfort zone, and learn through putting yourself out there and making those mistakes and learning from them. The best way to acquire a language is by using it, and if you are uncomfortable talking or if you are afraid of sounding silly, then you will have a harder time learning a language. Sociocultural factors also have a major influence in acquiring a second language. Some students come from cultures that believe it is most appropriate when students go to school to sit and listen. Also, some students grow up in a situation where their culture is very tight knit and strives to keep their native language and culture intact. As a result, someone might not feel motivated to learn an L2 because they prefer their native language and don’t want to immerse themselves into the American culture. Some cultures remain more distant than others, and this can make it harder for
Knowing nothing about the language and then suddenly having to learn how to read and write gave me big obstacles to overcome. During, elementary school through 6th grade I went to a bilingual school. We had a month of all English courses and then one month of all Spanish courses rotating along the school year. During, this time I learned how to read and write in English. Also how to use past, present, and future tenses while incorporating them into sentences. Not only was this difficult for me, but also having to read in front of classmates was embarrassing. Every time I would have to read out loud I could feel my face get hot and red. However, not only did I have to learn a new language and have an accent with it, but I also had to face the criticism from others who knew the language and had no struggle with
