Generation Z will be remembered for quite a few things, good and bad. Although, the most positive thing this generation will be remembered for is the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. This movement is a pro-black movement that works toward the safety and justice of African American people. It campaigns against violence and racism toward black people. Black Lives Matter supports all black lives, such as the lives of black queer and trans people, disabled people, black-undocumented people, people with records, women, and all black lives along the gender spectrum. The Black Lives Matter movement started off as a hashtag but has become so much more. The movement has been created to help rebuild the Black Liberation Movement. It has been taken
off of social media and into the streets. This movement began in 2012, after the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s killer. Trayvon Martin was a young African American male who was singled out and murdered because of his appearance. It was an unjust murder and it riled up the nation. The movement increased as the years progressed, especially with the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown, also African American males. The only difference was that they died due to the hands of the police. This is when the movement focused nationally on discussing race and policing. There are many misconceptions based around the movement. One of the biggest misconceptions is that the BLM movement only focuses on one issue – police brutality. While police brutality is one of the biggest issues, it is not the only one. To name a few, the movement focuses on issues such as public education, mass incarceration of African Americans and Latinos, problems with safe and affordable housing, issues with food security, reproductive justice challenges affecting poor women of color and all people needing access to reproductive care, and many more issues. Another misconception, is that the movement is anti-white and/or anti-cop. This is where groups such as “white lives matter” and “blue lives matter” arise. Saying the phrase, “black lives matter,” is not saying that other people’s lives do not matter. In fact, it is saying that in order for all lives to matter, black lives must matter first. This is not a hate group. Like stated in an article, “The Black Lives Matter movement demands that the country affirm the value of black life in practical and pragmatic ways…” Nothing about this movement is about hatred for anyone who is not colored. It is about acknowledging that the system already treats white lives as if they are more worthy than black lives. All things considered, the Black Lives Matter movement gave hope to a nation. It gave a voice to the people who thought that they had to remain silent in order to survive because that is what they were taught. The BLM movement brought attention to many issues faced within the African American community and is striving to find solutions to those problems. This movement is not about hate, this movement is about unity and love.
Today there are many controversial subjects discussed throughout the media. One of the most discussed is race and the Black Lives Matter movement. Recently, I came across an article titled “The Truth of ‘Black Lives Matter’”, written by The Editorial Board. The article was published on September 3, 2015, to the New York Times. In the article, The Editorial Board writes about what they believe African Americans are facing as challenges in society today, including the all-too-common police killings of unarmed African-Americans across the country. The Editorial Board is right that some African Americans have been treated unfairly, but all ethnicities have been. Life is a precious thing that comprises all ethnicities. This brings us to ask; why
The Black Power Movement is solely to create black power. Involvement in such an issue had been with the Black Panthers mentioned previously. The movement was violent but yet peaceful at some times. The goal was for a better black society, but it also counteracted with white supremacy. Most ideas were taken upon by the influencer Malcolm X.
Black lives matter is a social media movement that went of the Ferguson, Gardner cases etc. Also very rapidly it was to show as a opposition to the police and cops. Somehow when saying black lives matter it was like saying all life matter don’t matter. It’s a touchy subject due to why people view things and for most case I can understand. I feel that the person that made black life’s matter didn’t mean for it to be just all about black life but to inform others around the nation that there is a special problem that is only happening in the African American community and we have fix that issue . we as a society has to recognize this that the African American are not making this up this its not something being politicalized its real and there’s a history behind it so we have to seriously.
The Black Panther Movement made a progressive contribution to the US and civil rights. In order for a person to understand what the Civil Rights movement was, they would need to understand what political movements were involved, that made a big impact on the Black Community. What was the Civil Rights movement? The Civil Rights movement lasted from the late 1960s and early 1970s. But, the Civil Rights was not born during that time. When Abraham Lincoln was President, he had signed an agreement named the Emancipation Proclamation. This Proclamation was addressed to emancipate all of the slaves that were written on paper. If they were to leave their job as a slave they would have had no where to go and no money, so they still worked for their previous slave owners to get paid and have a life of their own. Other than Abraham Lincoln, who practically saved the black race, there were many others who were involved in the civil rights. They themselves created their own movement inside the civil rights to help give the black community freedom of speech and to stop the government from what the black community thought was racist.
There are people in America that makes us wonder why there is a world to begin with. There are people who represent the greater good of the world, and there are others who are unfortunately not for the greater good of the world. We have to constantly deal with those whose only goal in life is to bring the lives of others down to the ground; to shatter and to break them. This is what is happening now in the world, and this most likely will never change. As a result of trying to change the ways in which we live and interact with these people, there was a movement that wanted to change the lives of African-Americans, as well as other races. This movement was called “Black Lives Matter”. The people who were responsible for the creation of
Black Lives Matter is not a bandwagon to hop on, nor is it a hashtag or a slogan. Black Lives Matter is a movement. To not support the movement or to think that the movement does not need support is outright depraved, demeaning and degrading. We too often think that retweeting, tweeting or sharing a photo on social media is supporting the movement and it’s not! This is no longer the 1960’s. We have gained our rights: that is no longer the fight. The fight is receiving justice for our black people, so no effective protesting is no longer sitting at countertops, it is no longer peaceful marching and it is no longer bus boycotting The new protest is to educate ourselves, to show respect, to get involved in the justice system, to raise black lawyers, to vote and to do jury duty. All of these things are needed to benefit the movement in stopping the corruptness in our justice system.
The fight for equality has been fought for many years throughout American History and fought by multiple ethnicities. For African Americans this fight was not only fought to gain equal civil rights but also to allow a change at achieving the American dream. While the United States was faced with the Civil Rights Movements a silent storm brewed and from this storm emerged a social movement that shook the ground of the Civil Right Movement, giving way to a new movement that brought with it new powers and new fears. The phrase “Black power” coined during the Civil Right Movement for some was a slogan of empowerment, while other looked at it as a threat and attempted to quell this Black Power Movement.
“Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a movement against police violence that is, as argued by BLM supporters, disproportionately and systematically directed at black people. The movement has highlighted incidents in which police have harassed and killed black men and women. BLM is considered one of the most visible and controversial civil rights movement of the last decades.” (Black Lives Matter. 2016) “Black Lives Matter is an American social activist organization devoted to stopping violence and injustice against African Americans. The group was founded in 2013 following the acquittal of In the sixties African Americans began a Civil Rights Movement that, to some, still continue today; hence, the Black Lives Matter movement. During the sixties, the
The African American civil rights movement was a long journey for African American nationwide. The success involved many people, hardships and time in order to advance the African American community in America. The purpose of the movement was to achieve their rights, cease discrimination, and racial segregation.
There are many problems in today’s world, one of which is the existence of racism. Obviously it has improved dramatically over time, however racism is still out there in our every day lives. The movement Black Lives Matter has spread nationwide attracting the attention of many different parties. Black Lives Matter has had a large impact on the whole country with many people taking different stances on it.
If the lives of the mistreated blacks truly matter, the people that want to change the way things happen they would reach out in a peaceful way and engage others. Instead of acting out with violence and hatred. Overall, the movement should come together as one and actively speak against the "unjust" and "wrong doing ". All across the news and social media it has been mentioned and showed many times how the Black Lives Matter movement protests turn into violent outburst, in which many times harm those black lives that they are trying to protect and support. Instead of making matters worse there should be a plan to defeat the difficulties peacefully and correct the ignorance with a powerful but sympathetic stance. The only way one can truly start change is within themselves; people cannot expect others to help or see your vision of a better [equal] world. If all results seen from performances are malice and bitterness towards the
Overall, many believe that the undeviating war on racism in today’s society is fueled by police brutality and anti-police violence. Specifically, The Black Lives Matter movement which is the source of controversy regarding these topics. To summarize, this campaign is “both a hashtag and a political project that formed after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin.” (Miller). Later in the article Chelsea Fuller, senior communication associate of The Advancement project which is a multi-racial civil rights organization, states “The Black Lives Matter movement is to deal with anti-black racism, to “push for black people’s right to live with dignity and respect” and be included in the American democracy that they helped create” (Miller). In discussions of The Black Lives Matter movement, a controversial
That is why my family is advocate for black lives matter. There is too much stuff going on in today’s society especially towards black people. So I chose to a visual text for black lives matter.Black lives matter is a movement which purpose is to bring black people together. So that we can stand united. What I mean by stand united is that black people need to support each other to break away from stereotypes. It’s focused on black people being liberated from all the unnecessary hardships from people in positions of power. So the group was made to make a
When a person thinks about Black Lives Matter, he or she may visualize African Americans fighting for justice and equality. The movement Black Lives Matter was created to bring awareness to systematic racism, police brutality and social injustice that African Americans face on a daily basis. In contrary, All Lives Matter downplays the fact that black people are looked down upon in society. All Lives Matter may seem like an innocent title, but it emphasizes that justice for black people is not necessary. Black Lives Matter is not a movement that believes all lives do not matter; nevertheless, it highlights the fact that black lives are taken for granted by the judicial system.
According to the book review at Barnes and Nobel.com, “Black Power was one of the clearest manifestations of the movement's change of direction in the late 1960s.” Black Power was a change set out by one man to give rights back to black people and put an end to prejudice and imperialism. One of the goals set out by Kwame Ture and Charles Hamilton, the authors of Black Power was to make black people stronger and overcome the subjection of a white society. Suppression by whites was the central problem trying to be solved. Attempting to achieve a new consciousness of the problem, by responding in their own way to a white society, was the overall goal of the movement.
