Black Lives Matter is not a bandwagon to hop on, nor is it a hashtag or a slogan. Black Lives Matter is a movement. To not support the movement or to think that the movement does not need support is outright depraved, demeaning and degrading. We too often think that retweeting, tweeting or sharing a photo on social media is supporting the movement and it’s not! This is no longer the 1960’s. We have gained our rights: that is no longer the fight. The fight is receiving justice for our black people, so no effective protesting is no longer sitting at countertops, it is no longer peaceful marching and it is no longer bus boycotting The new protest is to educate ourselves, to show respect, to get involved in the justice system, to raise black lawyers, to vote and to do jury duty. All of these things are needed to benefit the movement in stopping the corruptness in our justice system. …show more content…
It should never be a case that a harmless, unarmed person must lie down on their back, die and receive no justice for us to want to get up and support racial equality. We must rebuild the Black liberation movement. We have to promote racial equality when African American children are serving years in jail for possession of marijuana, but privileged White children get 6 months on a rape charge. We have to also promote the minor injustices in the Black community; we cannot wait until the next death to decide we want to speak out. We have to take action now to speak out for the rights and freedom for all people. To give the next generation, who may even be your own children the benefit to not have to fight this fight of racial inequality and they could have the opportunity in seeing everyone as
Is people going to forget what happen in Ferguson? How about George Zimmerman being proven not guilty? Or that Eric Garner was screaming “ I can’t breathe” before his death? There are lists of African Americans all over the world who were not given the justice that they deserved. In todays, news African Americans are being treated unfairly compared to any other demographic groups. America is the greatest country in the world, but it is difficult to believe that being in the 21st century racism still does exist. For instance, when it was time to remove the confederate flag, some demographic groups had a hard time letting go. People who argue that “blue lives matter,” which states that police are justified when using force and being unfair. These reasons are not justifiable enough to kill someone. Black Lives Matter alleges that police target and use
The black community has suffered from years of social inequality and oppression. Social issues such as the criminalization of black males is a frequent problem in society. These social issues highlight the reforms that need to be done to ensure that the nation is not consistently targeting and prejudging others based on their race, especially when dealing with legal authorities. Widespread awareness of recent deaths of black males reveals many unaddressed social issues including “justifiable homicides.” In an attempt to fight against inequality and end violence against African Americans, three women created an international activist movement using the hashtag #blackLivesMatter. This movement goes beyond the extrajudicial killings of black people;
Black lives matter is a social media movement that went of the Ferguson, Gardner cases etc. Also very rapidly it was to show as a opposition to the police and cops. Somehow when saying black lives matter it was like saying all life matter don’t matter. It’s a touchy subject due to why people view things and for most case I can understand. I feel that the person that made black life’s matter didn’t mean for it to be just all about black life but to inform others around the nation that there is a special problem that is only happening in the African American community and we have fix that issue . we as a society has to recognize this that the African American are not making this up this its not something being politicalized its real and there’s a history behind it so we have to seriously.
American is known for its rich culture and diversity. Black lives matter (BLM) is an international activist movement, originating in the African-American community, that campaigns against violence and systemic racism toward black people as defined by google. It was created in 2012 as a call to action for black people after seventeen year old Trayvon Martin was placed on trial for his own murder and the killer, George Zimmerman, was not held accountable for the crime that he had committed. It was a response for the anti-Black racism that still remains in our society and within the movement itself. It is a movement that goes beyond the killing of black people by police and vigilantes. It calls for the Black community to love each other, live
This movement is called “Black Lives Matter”. The people who were responsible for the creation of this hashtag, which then expanded to be a movement, were three women: Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi. The way that the people are being used in this topic area is that it implies this notion. In this topic area, “Black Lives Matter” refers to African-Americans who are treated unfairly and blamed for the things that doesn’t have anything to do with them.
This paper was written to discuss the hot button topic, “Black Lives Matter.” Specifically, in regard to law enforcement. This has been an ongoing and controversial issue ever since the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin. This is when the movement “Black Lives Matter,” was born, with the belief that blacks are treated unfairly by law enforcement. I, however, do not believe that blacks are treated any more unfairly by law enforcement than any other race.
Ta’ nehisi Coates wrote a letter to his son and one of the statements he made said, “I remember being amazed that death could so easily rise up from the nothing of a boyish afternoon, billow up like a fog.” The interpretation, “It is amazing how quickly death can overtake an African American male at any moment.” Eric Garner, a witness to this statement, and now a part of the Black Lives Matter movement. Black people are slowly divided by what really matters more injustice itself or injustice of a race that cannot and never existed. Have we become so blind that we forgot the many Sandra Blands that risked it all building the African American race? They then begin to categorize this as Black Women Matter. A parallel statement that not only applies to injustice but to black people themselves. Black men bash the bodies that birthed them and give them to the system to finish the job they have already started. If black women cannot be respected by their own what makes you think the next white man or cop will give them that
Most of us have been taught that we always need to be on our best behavior and try to understand and value different views. I am going to exercise my right to protest by refusing to understand why some of my fellow classmates, sharing a classroom with me because just like me they are on a quest for knowledge, find it difficult to grasp the concept of Black Lives matter. Stop saying all lives matter. We already know that. Black Lives Matter is not an anti-white slogan meant to suggest that other lives do not matter, especially white lives. It is a movement to address the racial disparities practiced by law enforcement agencies throughout our nation. For anyone to say all lives matter is to be willfully ignorant and deny the existence of racism,
Imagine living in a world at which you are harassed and abused just because of the color of your skin. Since the beginning of America’s existence, Whites have had this strong hate towards the black population. The whites wanted to continue to have the power and control in their hands. In order for them to achieve this, the white southerners came up with the Jim Crow laws to prevent the African Americans from achieving their god given right of being free and equal. This did not end the African hope of becoming equal. After many years of mistreatment, African Americans knew that change in society was necessary. The members of the black population have been enslaved, beaten, abused, neglected and just taken advantage of, since the end of the civil war, even into present times, African Americans have struggled for equality and rights that white Americans often take for granted. Arguably, no post-war struggle was larger or more significant than the movement to eliminate the Jim Crow laws from existence in the South. As a large portion of the Civil Rights movement, many works are dedicated to the efforts put forth and the ensuing results, including “Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka”, “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”, “Black Revolution”, “Bigger Than a Hamburger,” and the act from Rosa Parks.
“Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a movement against police violence that is, as argued by BLM supporters, disproportionately and systematically directed at black people. The movement has highlighted incidents in which police have harassed and killed black men and women. BLM is considered one of the most visible and controversial civil rights movement of the last decades.” (Black Lives Matter. 2016) “Black Lives Matter is an American social activist organization devoted to stopping violence and injustice against African Americans. The group was founded in 2013 following the acquittal of In the sixties African Americans began a Civil Rights Movement that, to some, still continue today; hence, the Black Lives Matter movement. During the sixties, the
In multiple different occurrences the protests have angered others more than just gain awareness. Sadly a large number of people are more upset with the stop of traffic and other inconveniences caused by the protests, rather than the deaths of unarmed black men and women. The protest are doing their job to gain attention, but in the eyes of some they are doing it in the wrong way. One big rally cry the movement has had is “hands up, don’t shoot” which came after the shooting of Mike Brown in Ferguson Missouri. It was said that before he was killed he stated “my hands are up, don’t shoot me” which we find out afterward is not true. Anyways hands up don’t shoot, spread like wildfire and grabbed everyone’s attention. It was placed on the big stage, including sporting events, and areas of high traffic. Many common people support Black Lives Matter, but there may be some flaws in it as well. Clearly the main idea of the movement is good, and black lives really do matter. However would it not be safe to say that all lives matter rather than just black ones? It is true there have been many cases against African Americans and they may be targeted more often than other races. From another point of view, there would be riots in the
If the lives of the mistreated blacks truly matter, the people that want to change the way things happen they would reach out in a peaceful way and engage others. Instead of acting out with violence and hatred. Overall, the movement should come together as one and actively speak against the "unjust" and "wrong doing ". All across the news and social media it has been mentioned and showed many times how the Black Lives Matter movement protests turn into violent outburst, in which many times harm those black lives that they are trying to protect and support. Instead of making matters worse there should be a plan to defeat the difficulties peacefully and correct the ignorance with a powerful but sympathetic stance. The only way one can truly start change is within themselves; people cannot expect others to help or see your vision of a better [equal] world. If all results seen from performances are malice and bitterness towards the
Overall, many believe that the undeviating war on racism in today’s society is fueled by police brutality and anti-police violence. Specifically, The Black Lives Matter movement which is the source of controversy regarding these topics. To summarize, this campaign is “both a hashtag and a political project that formed after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin.” (Miller). Later in the article Chelsea Fuller, senior communication associate of The Advancement project which is a multi-racial civil rights organization, states “The Black Lives Matter movement is to deal with anti-black racism, to “push for black people’s right to live with dignity and respect” and be included in the American democracy that they helped create” (Miller). In discussions of The Black Lives Matter movement, a controversial
I truly feel that the outraged party are missing the concept of the whole movement. Black Lives Matter is necessary movement that is not saying the other lives do not, and it should continue until that unspoken social tension is resolved. With movements such as all live matters there has been a lot of tension.There have been riots and with that, outrage is completely understandable and outrage should be felt unanimously across America for these barbaric acts of vandalism and violence. I feel that when you say Black Lives Matter people feel as if they 're being
When a person thinks about Black Lives Matter, he or she may visualize African Americans fighting for justice and equality. The movement Black Lives Matter was created to bring awareness to systematic racism, police brutality and social injustice that African Americans face on a daily basis. In contrary, All Lives Matter downplays the fact that black people are looked down upon in society. All Lives Matter may seem like an innocent title, but it emphasizes that justice for black people is not necessary. Black Lives Matter is not a movement that believes all lives do not matter; nevertheless, it highlights the fact that black lives are taken for granted by the judicial system.
