Gender and Music Preference
There are so many different forms and genres of music that people admire. Even older genres that have seemed to die out still have fans such as disco or polka. Many researchers discuss why people favor the music that they do. This has been a popular topic in music research considering how important music has become in everyday life. Music is played in the car, on the internet, on cellphones, and even behind commercials on television. It is hard to imagine a world without it.
Now there are many reasons discussed about why people prefer one kind of music over another, such as one’s age. One’s age could determine what music was popular when they were a kid, or what genres they have been around to experience. Age is an undeniable factor when also considering how much music changes from generation to generation. For example, before the technology of mp3 players came along, music was carried through CDs and tape cassettes. One can now hold and transfer thousands of songs on just one mp3 player. It has become so easy now to have all of one’s favorite music right able to fit in a pocket. Age is just one of countless factors that can be considered. Another thought is that music preference is something formed in the mind. This idea seems very believable considering how catchy patterns and repeated beats are so easily remembered. Some believe that another factor that could be part of determining musical preference is ethnicity, or even the cultures one grows up in. I however think that gender plays a major role in the selected preferences of a musical listener. If a male listener was to tell his friends his favorite music was by Justin Bieber, would his friends take him seriously? Nothing against Justin Bieber...

Women in popular music have created a tremendous history in the wake of feminism. They have made their presence visible by identifying themselves as feminists. Being a woman was hard during that stage. Women were not allowed to do many things due to gender inequality such as the right to vote and to own a property. Therefore, from that moment onwards, women decided to stand up and make some changes. During the early stage of feminism, women developed their skills in popular music to create awareness. They associate popular music with feminism. Although there were racial issues between the black and white during that time, both sides continued to establish in different ways, through different genres of music. Black women focused on ‘black genres’ such as blues, jazz, and gospel, whereas white women performed in musical theatres. Female artists such as Lilian Hardin, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and Nina Simone were among the notable exceptions of female instrumentalists during feminism. In this essay, I will assess feminism focusing on the second-wave.
Music can be a very fun topic to discuss. Many people have different preferences or other first choices in the type of music they listen to. I like many different types of music. But as any other person I have one I prefer. Me, being the normal teenager, I prefer hip-hop.

In an era dominated by male artists, Fleetwood Mac featured their lead female singer Stevie Nicks, who went on to transcend the gender expectations of the time and pursue a solo career in the midst of heavy adversity. Nowadays women should be treated equally, but some very common stereotypes are still used. For example, in my last birthday, I received a gift from my friend in a pink bag. Then, I asked my friend, why he picked a pink bag, he simply replied "all women like pink," but actually he did not know that my favorite color was blue, and that does not mean that I am a boy. On another occasion, I was taking care of my little cousin, he began to play soccer, and when I asked him if I could play with him, he answered me, "not because girls do not know how to play football," his answer surprised me, so I take his soccer ball, and I showed him that he was wrong, because women can play different sports.
Music are a few things we tend to hear every day. Whether or not it’s from our own ipods, in our cars, or background music to our lives. A song exists for pretty much every feeling and music will be thought of as extremely healing mechanism. Over the years there are various varieties of music that everyone embrace completely different beats, sounds, and evoke different emotions. Such varieties of music is hip hop and rap, alternative music, and rock and roll music. Music incorporates a long line and every single sound and sort of music is tangled together inside each other and influenced by each other. For these reasons, music not solely defines a sort of sound, however additionally recreates lifestyles and defines entire generations. There are many factors in life that affect personality, but perhaps one of the most significant is the genre of music you listen to. I chose to focus specifically on how music may affect an individual’s personality. I used two resources to support this topic. The first is a peer-reviewed article from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology titled, “Exposure to Violent Media: The Effects of Songs with Violent Lyrics on Aggressive Thoughts and Feelings”. The other is a popular press article published in Psychology Today, titled as “What Your Stuff Reveals about You.” These two articles will make you question the genre of music you listen to.
My object of analysis is going to be “boy bands” which I am defining as “a band of boys usually playing pop music that is marketed towards young women.” I am going to specifically look at the band 5 Seconds of Summer and I am going to look at how their music and success becomes undermined because their target audience is primarily young women. Different types of music have different reputations; heavy metal music is often labeled as "negative," yet others find it a harmless form of music. It is my belief that music may have some sort of effect on the listener, but nothing serious and nothing damaging.
