Women were continuing to display their sexuality throughout the film, and the opening musical number is evidence of this. Women were done being treated like objects, and were becoming more confident and bold members of society. This scene was very significant because it really showed how women were not there just to please men. A cast member that exemplified a gender role was Brad 's older brother, Lawrence. Lawrence is shocked to see Brad planning to marry some flapper girl, when a good chunk of their financial well-being could be lost due to this. He sees these women who are expressing their sexuality and breaking apart from the traditional punching bag of a woman to be gold diggers, and nothing more. In a way, Lawrence depicts the typical close-minded American male. Trixie also broke stereotypes for the typical woman in this film. Trixie is an outspoken, funny, and loud mouthed female and this was not very common among women during this time, but she symbolized everything a woman should want to be during this time. The Disney movie, Mulan, is a fantastic movie that depicts gender-stereotyped roles, socialization of gender roles, and consequences of over stepping one’s gender role. Both males and females have a specific role in the Chinese society that one must follow. Mulan made a brave choice pretending to be a man and going to war against the Huns in place of her father, risking serious consequences if she were to get caught. She broke the socialization of gender roles and could have been faced with very serious consequences of her actions. The Chinese society in Mulan exemplifies the typical gender roles of males and females, the consequences of displaying the opposite gender role, and showed what the society expected in males and females in characteristics and attitudes.
Gender roles and inequality are still evolving and continue to change. It has only been not that long ago that women started to break out their outlined roles and looked at about the same or- almost the same level- as men on a wide scale basis. Indeed, some women in certain parts of the world are still represented in the same way as in both plays that will be compared in this essay. The characters in Susan Glaspell’s Trifles and Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll's House highlight the challenges of gender roles. In almost every film there is constant gender expectation and role audiences expect men and women to act like in a particular story. Moulin Rouge, a movie set during the 1900s narrates the story of a courtesan woman, Satine, as she undergoes hardships to earn money, experiences love but unfortunately, due to her irrational choices, faces tragic consequences at the end. As the plot develops, Satine transforms from a worthless prostitute to someone who is courageous and willing to face her fears in order to attain her aspirations. Gender roles can be comprehended through studying human society and the individual relationships among people in that society. Different aspects of society such as politics, economics, and the social aspects of society, are interlinked with gender roles.
