I did my paper on the movie Pleasantville. This is about a brother and sister who get trapped inside the 50’s television show, Pleasantville. The movie starts off in color until they get to Pleasantville where their world suddenly turns to black and white. Pleasantville is a perfect society where husbands come home to a beautiful wife and children and a home cooked meal ready on the table, and everything and everyone works together to make the community a perfectly functioning society. When the siblings, David and Jennifer, become part of Pleasantville’s perfect society they immediately have a strong influence that changes it substantially. Gender institutions is defined as “the total patterns of gender relations that structure social institutions, including the stereotypical expectations, interpersonal relationships, and the different placement of men and women that are found in institutions”( Andersen). Bud (David as a Pleasantville civilian), has a relationship with a girl named Margaret in Pleasantville. Margaret is the stereotypical innocent girl-next-door. She bakes Bud cookies to show her interest in him in the beginning of the movie, which is a typical girly action for a young girl in the fifties. The most clearly depicted example of gender institutions is the family life that all the families live in Pleasantville. The parents are the classic fifties mom and dad where the dad comes home from work expecting his made-up wife and cheerful children to welcome him at the door with a hug and kiss as well as dinner waiting on the table. One night when the father, George Parker, comes home from work to an empty house and no dinner prepared for him, he does not know what to do with himself. He calls throughout the house “Honey, I’m home! Where is my dinner?” And he gets no response (Pleasantville). After realizing no one was going to respond and there was no dinner prepared for him, he immediately goes to the bowling ally to meet up with his guy friends to discuss with them the problems he is facing at home with his wife. The film that interested me for this assignment was “Boyz n the Hood”. The movie was about a Los Angeles neighborhood expanding of drug and gang culture, with increasingly tragic results. It was about how one teen had family support to guide him on the right path in life regarding the social problems around him. The other two teens in the film wasn’t as fortunate and fell into the social problems of drugs, violence, and gangs; where one ended up dead.
Discriminating gender roles throughout the movie leaves one to believe if they are supposed to act a certain way. This film gives women and men roles that don’t exist anymore, during the 60s women were known to care for the family and take care of the house, basically working at home. However, a male was supposed to fight for his family, doing all the hard work so his wife didn’t have too. In today’s world, everyone does what makes them happy. You can’t tell a woman to stay at home, that makes them feel useless. Furthermore, males still play the roles of hard workers, they are powerful compared to a woman. However, in today’s world a male knows it isn’t right to boss a woman around, where in the 60s, it happened, today women have rights to do what they want not what they are

The novel Peyton Place (1956) by Grace Metalious dealt with many scandals among the inhabitants of what appears to be a serious and proper New England town which later became a popular TV series in 1960s. The novel was considered indecent and scandalous and it included taboo subjects like sex, profanity, alcoholism, and graphic violence. A year after the publication of the work it was turned into a movie which became a major hit. A popular TV series in the 1960s based on the novel became forerunner of TV dramas such as Desperate Housewives. There occurred a drastic change in the publishing industry after the publication of Peyton Place. Americans no longer felt embarrassed about reading such novels
I chose to do my paper on the movie Sweet Nothing in My Ear. The movie was about a child who was born hearing and ended up going deaf, so his parents had to deliberate on whether or not they wanted to get him a cochlear implant. The wife Laura (played by Marlee Matlin) is deaf and her husband Dan is hearing. The movie is centered around Laura and Dan’s struggle to decide if a cochlear implant is what’s best for their son Adam. It doesn’t help Laura make the decision when her parents are both deaf, and her father is basically prejudiced against the hearing culture.

In all of these pieces of literature, the behavioral norms that are considered appropriate for men and women are tested. In The Yellow Wallpaper, a wife is pushed to insanity, in A Doll’s House, a housewife goes against expectation, in The Great Gatsby, male dominance is pushed to the extreme. Gender roles dictate men and women’s lives. The concept that you must live up to society’s expectations controls men and women’s thoughts and actions, and it must come to an end. All these authors captured a vital lesson to be learned: Men and woman should be treated equally.
Throughout this essay I explained the movie Amistad and how race relations were seen throughout the movie. This movie really helps people see how horrible it was for African Americans back in 1839-1842. During the 1950‘s suburbs such as Levitown were springing up all across the country, and the so-called American dream was easier to achieve for everyday Americans than ever before. They had just come out of two decades dominated by The Great Depression and World War Two, and finally prosperity was in sight. The need for women to work out of the home that was present during the war was no more, and women were overwhelmingly relegated to female-dominated professions like nursing, secretaries, and teachers, if they worked at all. Televisions became very popular, and quickly became part of the American cultural canon of entertainment. Leave It To Beaver is a classic American television show, encompassing values such as respect, responsibility and learning from your mistakes. But, at least in the episode used for this essay, it is also shockingly sexist to a modern viewer. Using the movie Love Jones I will talk about the characteristics of male/male and female/female relationship as they are portrayed in the film.
