In the novel, Bodega Dreams, by Ernesto Quinonez, characters sacrifice their most precious beloved things to succeed in Spanish Harlem. The Puerto Rican community of Spanish Harlem in New York City expresses how immigrants deal with their hardships to go against the society’s ideals of the white privilege. The protagonist, Julio (a.k.a Chino), gives his point of view as he deals with his relationship and contributing to the illegal drug business which was led by William Bodega. Throughout the novel, sacrifice is represented in the developments of love, business, and culture in the Spanish Harlem community.

Critical Race Theory outlines this system of oppression as it relates to white and non-white races. By using the critical race theory coupled with the system of oppression described by Freire (2000), I propose that within the system of oppression, the oppressor must keep its own members in line with the prescribed guidelines by reinforcing the social norms from birth. When you mention gender roles in society the first thing that comes to mind usually are stereotypes, or the set labels that society has established on how everyone acts based on the different biological, social, and cultural categories they fit into. Throughout history these stereotypes that pertain to genders roles in society have been proven true. Gender roles refer to a behavioral and social norms that are widely accepted for people of a certain sex. In this report I will discussing the gender roles of the two most recognized types of gender, man and woman, from the perspective of a man and a woman who have lived 65+ years. I will also discuss how those roles have influenced society and how they have changed gradually over the years.

As much as Tannen says that “[the men] had the option of being unmarked”, she neglects the fact that other factors like race, speech, and how someone carries themselves can all affect how they are marked by their peers (88). For example, in Junot Diaz’s “How to date a brown girl”, his character is instantly marked by his date when she says, “I like Spanish guys” (103). Even though he is not from Spain, he will always be marked in this way when he is around racially different groups. This can apply to any race, and it is impossible for someone to choose to not send that message. Another area where people can be marked is speech. When a person is from a particular region of the U.S., they will have a noticeable accent that connects them to the stereotypes of that region. Just like Tannen asserts that women have no style that is unmarked, so there is no style of speech that is unmarked (89). One other area Tannen did not discuss is how someone carries themselves, what kind of body language they unconsciously use. Unintentional body language like leaning in, head tilting, and upward gazing can be marked in the same way that Tannen suggests that women’s clothing can be, an “unintended [message] of availability” (89).
