Throughout history women in general have been subjected to gender-based discrimination. The hardships and challenges women endured were based on cultural stereotypes that portrayed women as only somebody’s wife or mother — as if they were property. In patriarchal, male-dominated societies that exist in many, if not all aspects of the world continues to view women as the “weaker sex” who need constant provision and protection. It is that form of male chauvinism that leads to the abuse, suppression, and exploitation of women, especially in developing nations and societies. The sources first associated the acerbity of gender-based discrimination in the workplace. Jennifer Berdahl (2007) is a professor who researched this issue in her article, “Harassment Based on Sex: Protecting Social Status in the Context of Gender Hierarchy”. In her study she focuses on sexual harassment research on the harassment of women by men and how it has been challenged. She predicts harassment levels of men in the work place and behaviors experienced by women. Berdahl (2007) states that, “[the results found that] men are considerably less threatened than women... sexual coercion the most threatening form of harassment… the results also showed signs of backlash among men against organizational measures that address sexual harassment and discrimination against women” (p. 657-8). In addition to work-related gender discrimination, Diploye & Colella (2005) published writings in The Organizational Frontier Series which give data on the issues of discrimination at work and its effects. Throughout the book, they touch on multiple aspects of discrimination which include: individual and group levels, age, and gender. When speaking on the basis of gender discrimination, Dipboye & Colella (2005) state, “women are treated less favorably than men” (p. 149). Also based on that statement, the authors let the reader infer that they are discriminated even when favored (harassment). Despite legislation for equal opportunities, sexism is still evident in the workplace. Women have made great advancements in the workforce and have become an integral part of the labor market. They have greater access to higher education and as a result, greater access to traditionally male dominated professions such as law. While statistics show that women are equal to men in terms of their numbers in the law profession, it is clear however, that they have not yet achieved equality in all other areas of their employment. Discrimination in the form of gender, sex and sexual harassment continues to be a problem in today’s society.

Many ancient laws and beliefs show that women from all around the world have always been considered inferior to men. However, as time went on, ideas of equality circulated around and women started to demand equality. Many women fought for equality and succeeded in bringing some rights. However, full equality for women has yet to be fulfilled. This issue is important because many women believe that the rights of a person should not be infringed no matter what their gender is, and by not giving them equality, their rights are being limited. During the periods 1840 to 1968, total equality for women did not become a reality due to inadequate political representation, economic discrepancy, and commercial objectification.
Anastasia Engebretson was a typical college graduate, ready to join the workforce. Anastasia graduated university with a bachelor’s degree in physics, and like many new graduates, she was glad to begin to work in her area of study. She began working as a technician, but soon found out that she was being paid significantly less than men at her workplace who were less skilled and less educated than her. Gender discrimination is defined as prejudice against an individual due to his or her gender or sex. Discrimination against women has been occurring for years and continues to pose an issue today, especially in institutions such as the workforce. In the past, women were limited to very few rights; they were not permitted to vote and were considered as “property”. The only real jobs they had were housewives.and only a handful of women were in the labor force. In today’s society, women compose more than half of the workforce, yet they earn a significantly less amount compared to their male counterparts for completing the same tasks. Gender discrimination in the workplace is something that both men and women experience, women more than men. For instance, the current gender pat gap is 21 percent. This means that women are currently making 21 percent less than what their male counterparts are making. It has decreased over the years, but it is still a significant gap. In the workplace, women do not only experience discrimination in pay, but also in opportunities. An article states that, women are deemed less communal than men and that makes them less suited for certain careers (Miner, et. al, 2014). This thought alone puts women at a disadvantage when they are entering the labor force.
Sex is one of the most central themes in society today, with generally everybody in the world, adults and children, either seeing it in the mass media or taking part in it, whether it be for their career, for reproductive reasons, or for pleasure. Because of its predominance, sexuality plays an important, if not the most important, role in social inequality, causing double standards, violence and internal self-worth issues for minorities. Factors such as pornography, prostitution, and the way people view homosexuality and intersexuality as repugnant all influence the prejudice ways in which society views and treats women, homosexuals, and intersexuals.

As an overall sex, they are expected to be gentle, calm, and obedient which consequently leads to women being the oppressed gender. In the 19th century, women 's suffrage did not exist in America and they were not allowed to work. They were only supposed to cook, clean and bear children. I was somewhat reluctant to choose the topic of "Race and Sex Discrimination". However, it offends me because several of my co-workers and including myself belief my current employer filled certain jobs based on race and sex. I have the opportunity to work for this employer for the last 12 years, and I have never seen a person of color earn any sort of job promotion that isn't seniority based.
The idea of separate sexes has been around since humans began constructing civilizations and has progressively worsened over time. The world has mostly consisted of patriarchal institutions since then, and has oppressed women in the sense that they are less than men in status and civility. Because of this women are forced to take on specific [often times inferior]roles in society, many of those roles being; taking care of the homestead, child care, and maintaining a kosher dwelling while men assume the more prestigious occupations. “A son in all sorts of trouble finally seeks out his father for advice during a particularly bad crisis. But when he finds his father wearing an apron while washing dishes in the kitchen, the son recoils in disgust… The parents of an 18-year-old girl describe their fear that their daughter will be an old maid because she is so terribly bright and independent. They decide that the mother will have a “talk with her” (“Changing Gender Norms” Eliman-Taggart)” An analogous philosophy is introduced in the novel A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. In the series, Arya, daughter of Lord Eddard Stark has grown up along with her brothers who trained in the art of swordplay and her sister who was training to become a lady. Despite constant reprimanding, Arya dejected the concept of evolving into a lady and aspired to become a knight alongside her brothers. She is mocked throughout the story for her “boyish” manner. She is surprisingly encouraged by her father to pursue what she wants regardless of what is seen as socially acceptable behaviour for a girl.
Waking up in the morning, looking in the mirror, I realize how much I care about what other people think of me even if I try not to. Judgement itself isn’t a bad thing because it helps us choose between right or wrong; good or evil; fair or unjust, but there is a branch of judgment that we could do without, discrimination. Discrimination is a poison killing whatever it touches; giving us false power over those around us. We all deal with discrimination, whether we are on the receiving end, or the cause. Nothing good ever comes from it, so why do we continue to be participants?
Sexual harassment in the workplace has been a huge problem in recent history. It can happen to anyone, and it can happen everywhere. It can affect all types of races, genders and ages. Statistics today show that more and more sexual harassment has become an issue due to the large number of cases presented. Mainstream media becomes consumed covering sexual harassment because of the high-profile cases.
In today’s workplace, sexual harassment is a growing problem. The legal definition of sexual harassment is any unwelcome sexual advance or conduct on the job that creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive working environment. Another definition is the making of unwanted and offensive sexual advances or of sexually offensive remarks or acts, especially by one in a superior or supervisory position. Women and men of all ages, backgrounds, races and experience are harassed on the job. Sexual harassment encountered in workplaces is a hazard across the world that reduces the quality of working life, jeopardizes the well-being of women and men, undermines gender equality and imposes costs on firms and organizations.
