Gender discrimination is defined as prejudice against an individual due to his or her gender or sex. Discrimination against women has been occurring for years and continues to pose an issue today, especially in institutions such as the workforce. In the past, women were limited to very few rights; they were not permitted to vote and were considered as “property”. The only real jobs they had were housewives.and only a handful of women were in the labor force. In today’s society, women compose more than half of the workforce, yet they earn a significantly less amount compared to their male counterparts for completing the same tasks. Due to the subtleness of the issue, many still continue to be unaware of the discrimination which occurs. Women have historically been submissive to men and with this, it may also be recalled that the perception of one also plays a major role in how that individual is treated by society. The inequalities present between men and women will be further discussed in this essay in respects to the gender discrimination which exist in the workforce. Through the course of history, women have accomplished many feats surpassing stereotypes of being only useful for their vanity. The scholar Chisholm-Burns states that “it is clear that gender bias remains a challenge for women in the workplace, particularly as they try to move up the career ladder” (312). Society has made it hard, but not impossible, for women to accomplish certain goals. Women have been treated unfairly and discriminated in the workforce for too long. The discrimination that these women face is unjust and unwarranted. It is sad that as a society in the twenty-first century we are still trying to combat these issues. In Developing Women Leaders was published in The Industrial-Organizational Psychologist July 1, 2012 it discusses possible solutions and how stigmas and stereotypes are starting to change. As a female, I wouldn’t say that I am oppressed, however, I have experienced some impartial treatment compared my male correspondent. Specifically, at work my workplace, men seem to be preferred for certain positions than me. For example, when applying for a manager position in the shoe department, preference was given to another male with fewer qualifications. I also grew up in a house with all boys, I had to take on the responsibilities that a female would around the house. I had to cook for my brothers, clean up after them and even wash their clothes at times. Other than those instances, being a female does not make me feel oppressive.
A social problem we face today, though it is arguable and seemingly only a social problem for women, is gender discrimination. As it stands, world women gain significantly less in wages overall compared to the male population. In fact, “women working full time earn 77% as much as men.” And, just until quite recently women were discriminated against in not being allowed to do certain jobs that were thought of as “men’s work.” A place where this was harbored was in the U.S. military, just to name an example (129). Discrimination in the work place towards women is extremely common and occurs in everyday life. You can prove this by explaining how women in the workplace get paid, get promoted and get treated based on their sex. Sex discrimination in the workplace comes with many different faces. In its most basic form, it involves outright exclusion of women, solely by reason of their gender. Even where women have gained access to the workplace, sex discrimination may persist in other ways. From the day this country was founded there has been the problem of equality. In those days the problem was whether or not the English had rights to take over the land and push the Indians westward and in these days it 's everything from the workplace to even clothing.
