I assisted nursing staff and medical providers with various procedures including splinting, wound repair, central line placement, intubations, and chest tube placement. I also aided in the stablization and care of critical patients. Additionally I transported patients from the ER to the main hospital when they were admitted. During this time I learned how to use the computational chemistry programs Spartan and AutoDock Vina in order to perform a similarity analysis on anti-epileptic drugs. The goal of this project was to determine which drug has the best fit based on the calculated binding affinity to the active site on the GABA-A receptor in the human brain. This research is important because it provides useful information to Medicinal Chemists …show more content…
when designing new drugs to treat seizure disorders. After being selected to participate in this Greek honor society, I attended monthly meetings where we discussed topics in biology and community service, career and research oppurtunities.
During the second year I was elected to the position of secretary where I was responsible for recording and distributing the meeting minutes as well as other administrative tasks. Since there were minimal resources for pre-health students at the University of Redlands, one other student and I created the Pre-Health Club. The first year I served as Vice President and then assumed the role of President the following year. I planned weekly meetings in which we would discuss various career paths in the health industry, community service opportunities and various health related topics. I also organized various guest speakers during club meetings and field trips to nearby schools for health sciences. I participated in biweekly meetins where we discussed topics in chemistry and community service, career and research oppurtunities. We also performed and observed various experiences such as placing gummy bears in potassium chlorate or making beer. During this time I was able to from a close relationship with my chemistry professors and peers. I participated in biweekly meetings where we discussed topics in biology and community service, career and research
oppurtunities. I assisted the staff on the Mother-Baby Unit by greeting visitors, assembling chart packets and providing patients with water and other essentials. I have played the Clarinet since the sixth grade. Upon entering college I joined the Symphonic Band because I wanted to continue playing music. At first I struggled to keep up with my fellow musicians, most of whom were music majors and had more experience that I did. However, I continued to challenge myself and the more I practiced and continued playing the better I got. Unfortunately due to a recent wrist injury I have had to take a break from playing my instrument, but am eager to continue again. I met with clients in their homes and help students with homework, projects or prepare for various tests. During this time I had the opportunity to tutor Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus, Algebra, General Chemistry, 6th grade science and all subjects of 4th grade. After my last client from Warwar Academy no longer needed tutoring, I continued to take on new students as a freelance tutor.

The nurse needs to recognize the limitations of each staff member and learn what assignments are within the scope of their practice and what are tasks that need delegation. Delegation is defined as a complex process that requires clinical judgment and final accountability for patients’ care (Weydt, 2010). An assignment is defined as “giving someone else a task within his/her own practice and is base on job descriptions and policies” (NCSBN, 2005, p. 1). The Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) and the Board of Vocational nursing & Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) website, lists what duties the RN and the LVN can legally do and is within their scope of practice, this is called the ‘nurse practice act’. A nurse assistant personnel (NAP) or Unlicensed Assistive personnel (UAP) may perform different tasks depending on the state that they reside in, but most include tasks that are considered activities of daily living (ambulating, hygiene, grooming)(NCSBN, 2005). The LVN can perform tasks that the nursing assistant can do, as well as other tasks which include: medication administration (oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular), simple dressing changes, wound care, suctioning, catheter insertion, drawing blood from a patient, and starting an IV and intravenous fluids. IV and blood draws are dependent on the LVNs certification, competence, and

As a caring volunteer I provided limited direct patient care, assisted patients with mobility, grooming, and dressing, answered patient call buttons promptly, assisted in transferring patients from bed to wheel chair and visa versa, transported patients to and from procedure rooms, escorted patients, families, and visitors to their required destinations, assisted patients during meal times, managed patient records and assisted patients and families in filling out admission forms, made frequent rounds in assigned departments to assess patients' needs, prepared patient beds and equipment for procedures such as endoscopy or ultrasounds, aided patient discharge by managing appropriate paperwork, answered phones and relay messages, assist patients
Since matriculating to Wake Forest School of Medicine, Jonathan has been very involved with student organizations that attract the creative energy and civic commitments of students. As an active member and leader of the Wake Forest Chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), Jonathan has devoted many hours to the planning and execution of numerous events and initiatives involving advocacy, community outreach, and service. His most significant involvement was with the SNMA Inaugural Art for a Cure Gala and Art Silent Auction. For the event, he used his nonprofit event management and leadership abilities to organize a successful fundraising campaign and gain support from local organizations to accumulate over $1,000 for research purposes at Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center. Eager to help others learn from his experiences to achieve their own goals, Jonathan has also mentored local undergraduate, graduate, and medical students individually and through SNMA
The nature of the work is very similar for the C.N.A. and L.P.N. A C.N.A. work includes performing routine tasks under the supervision of nursing staff. They answer call bells, deliver messages, serve meals, make beds, and help patients eat, dress, and bathe. Aides also provide skin care to patients, take pulse, temperature, respiration, and blood pressure and help patients get in and out of bed and walk. They also escort patients to operating rooms, exam rooms, keep patient rooms neat, set up equipment, or store and move supplies. Aides observe patient’s physical, mental, and emotional condition and report any change to the R.N. Likewise the L.P.N. provides basic bedside care. They take vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, restorations, and pulse. They also treat bedsores, prepare and give injections and enemas, apply dressings, apply ice packs and insert catheters. L.P.N.’s observe patients and report adverse reactions to medications or treatments to the R.N. or the doctor. They help patients with bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene, and care for their emotional needs.
Although students were not allowed in the recovery unit, I was able to talk to one of the recovery nurses. I learned that a nurse’s duty of care includes monitoring the patient’s vital signs and level of consciousness, and maintaining airway patency. Assessing pain and the effectiveness of pain management is also necessary. Once patients are transferred to the surgical ward, the goal is to assist in the recovery process, as well as providing referral details and education on care required when the patient returns home (Hamlin, 2010).
The nurse made sure that my grandfather was comfortable, checking up on him regularly and asking if he needed his bed adjusted or if he needed a drink of water The nurse made sure my grandfather felt protected. My grandfather was on morphine for his pain which made him disorientated. My grandfather thought that he was seeing people coming after him with swords and was quite frightened. The nurse made sure to stay with him and reassure him that it was only the medication making him a bit out of it and that there was nothing to worry about, that she would take good care of him and protect him from any possible dangers Conclusion
There are many different jobs and duties required of a Registered Nurse (RN). The job duties include the main focal points of the job, such as administering medicines and treatments to patients; monitor the medical equipment, and even teaching the patient and the patient’s families on how to manage illnesses and injuries. These are just a few of the many duties that a nurse must perform daily while on the job. A nurse isn’t just handed a list that covers all of their duties for every job. A nurse’s titles and duties often depend on where they work and the patients they work with. Some registered nurses such as pediatric nurses work with children and teens or trauma nurses which work in stand-alone emergency departments or in a hospital are some examples of how where they work affects what they do. Some nurses will work in high pressure situations, such as the trauma nurse, and others may work in low pressure more lax environments, such as a school nurse.
So for my second event, I participated in two surveys that were all about pollution in the environment, one was specifically focused on the Gold King Mine spill and the other was more focused on methane pollution in the environment. The surveys were being conducted by two separate groups of students who were conducting these surveys in regards to their own research proposals. Specifically, they both examined pollution in the environment and its negative effects, short term and long term on the natural environment. Therefore, within both surveys, researchers were looking for Fort Lewis College (FLC) students and staff to input to their opinion on what could be done to help the environment in the now and in the future.
One of the many categories would be that of the circulating nurse. Ensuring that the operating room is set up correctly based on the preference of the surgeon, the circulating nurse makes sure all the necessary equipment’s are in place, functioning appropriately, likewise ready to go. In addition, the circulating nurse also verifies the patient identity, surgical site, and consent with the surgeon upon entering the operating room to make sure that they are all the same page, before proceeding with the schedule procedure. Yet another function of the circulating nurse is to make sure that the patient is positioned correctly on the surgical table, hooking up the basic suctions needed, and assisting the anesthesiologist or anesthetist during intubation. Moreover, monitoring the overall condition of the
I participated in two internships, one with a social change & environmental consulting agency and one with the Orange County Human Relations Commission. For the former, I independently created a framework, curriculum, educational materials, and funding sources for an activist fellowship and helped run the blog. I also attended coaching sessions for social entrepreneurship and activism, including applying ecological principles to collective action & studying ecosystems as models for self-sustaining institutional structures. For the latter, I researched and analyzed implicit bias to create curriculum for implicit bias trainings for educators as part of the BRIDGES program, which addresses intergroup contact, bullying, and hate acts in Orange County schools. I also worked on my fellowship with the Sierra Club, working on creating educational materials about the intersection of reproductive justice & the environment. Additionally, I attended the Student Conservation and Climate Congress with the Green Schools Alliance and worked on my fellowship with them, studying student environmentalism. Along with all of that, I continued all of my projects from the school year-- working on my zine, planning my Take Back the Tap campaign, and planning Our Climate Story
Taking that step towards high school, an important part in my life was Community Action for Teens. This organization has allowed me to collaboratively work with youths to develop leadership skills in order to produce a difference in our lives, families, schools and communities. As a group, we became advocates against challenging issues that concern people our age, especially alcohol and tobacco use. Together, we
I went to the operating room on March 23, 2016 for the Wilkes Community College Nursing Class of 2017 for observation. Another student and I were assigned to this unit from 7:30am-2:00pm. When we got their we changed into the operating room scrubs, placed a bonnet on our heads and placed booties over our shoes. I got to observe three different surgeries, two laparoscopic shoulder surgeries and one ankle surgery. While cleaning the surgical room for the next surgery, I got to communicate with the nurses and surgical team they explained the flow and equipment that was used in the operating room.
