The general policing and patrolling for the G20 Summit was provided by the Toronto Police Service, Ontario Police Service, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the Canadian Forces, while the Peel Regional Police aided at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga during the arrivals of delegates. The five departments formed an Integrated Security Unit (ISU), which was similar to the one created for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. At the time I personally thought that the amount of security they had prior to the summit was quite extensive. I never considered the number of people that would be protesting, the number of “important persons” who would be at one location, or the number of incidents that were taking place which the public is not fully aware of. …show more content…
People began damaging businesses throughout downtown Toronto, police cruisers were set on fire, vehicles of media corporations were being damaged. Hospitals, hotels, and shopping centres were put on lock down. I feel like there would have been a lot more casualties and destruction if Toronto did not have the amount of security that they did. I was working in downtown Vancouver when the winter Olympics were on and the number of people that were in such a confined space was madness. The only difference is that these people were not protesting and generally in a happy state. I still found it overwhelming to be among that quantity of people, so having all of the security there was comforting. The police/security at the Vancouver Olympics followed similar protocols that took place in Toronto. They set up a perimeter for downtown, had check points and secured areas. Liquor stores in the downtown areas ended up closing because of the influx of intoxicated people. There were some minor protests that occurred on the bridge but it was kept peaceful. Very
The next day, March 17, the Canadians were scheduled to play the Detroit Red Wings at the Forum in Montreal. The mood of the spectators was fowled even more by the fact that the Wings were a point behind Richard's team in the standings. A crowd of nearly 800 protestors had already gathered around the Forum by game time. Due to these manifestations, extra police forces were called to the scene. Officials pleaded with Campbell, asking him not to appear at the game. He ignored them and quietly made his way to his seat. The fans noticed him and threw peanuts, eggs and programs at him.

Police officers abuse of their power and use excessive force against people which most of the time isn’t necessary. In the case of Richard Moore, two Toronto police officers beat him leaving him with fractured ribs and a severe cut to the skull because he was running in the streets allegedly drunk and they wanted to save him from running across the street and harming himself. The results from the hospital indicated that there wasn’t even any alcohol in Moore’s system therefore the police honestly had no reason to beat him up like that. This just goes to prove that police officers don’t think twice about their actions and often use excessive force when it isn’t necessary.
In the USA there is a great divide between their people and their many contending loyalties, a situation like this is what we are trying to prevent in Canada. Many groups are at conflict over religion, language and race. One example of this is the Black Lives Matter movement. It started in 2013, in response to the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager from Florida. Since this incident there have been many instances of people in authority racially profiling blacks, which consequently often leads to police brutality. Such as the deaths of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Freddie Grey and Tamir Rice. All of these men were unarmed and unjustly killed. Protests started to pop up around many major cities in the USA, demanding for the police force and government to change their ways. Two major protests were in Ferguson, MO in 2014 and Baltimore, MD in 2015. Both were triggered by brutality against members of the black community. In Ferguson the protests were fueled by the death of Michael Brown. Brown had robbed a convenience store and when questioned allegedly attempted to grab the officer’s gun. The police officer discharged his gun, injuring the man who then fled. Brown turned to surrender, raising his hands above his head the office fatally shot him, claiming he had charged at him. Brown’s body was left in the street for four hours after the shooting, which greatly
Policing in Canada is much different from many other nations due to the rich cultural diversity that Canada is blessed with having. The discussion on policing in a multicultural society must be viewed as a much more political question on how to respond to diversity (Ben-Porat, 2007). Policing has a problem when minority groups feel alienated from the Police or when they feel that the police are enforcing discriminating policies and unjust laws (Ben-Porat, 2007). There are many examples in Canada of racial biases on the side of the police. Recently the RCMP commissioner Bob Paulson made a public address acknowledging racial bias in Canadian Policing (Ireland, 2016). Unfortunately, credibility and legitimacy of the police among different minority groups in Canada has yet to be met due to these groups feeling that they have been unfairly treated (Ben-Porat, 2007). Most police agencies in Canada now have some form of diversity training relating to specific minority groups. Another thing that some of Canadas police agencies have done
Police should be responsible for upholding the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in Canada. The more police abide by the Charter, the more criminal cases will be prosecuted in the court system. As police officers are usually the first point of contact within the criminal justice system for the public, it is very important that they respect individual’s rights and freedoms, as well as perform searches and collect evidence legally and by the book. The more they do this, the more they will see their collected evidence used in trials and used to convict the individuals they arrested. An example that examines this is the case against Mohamed Hamed in Ottawa. In 2015, the officer in this case, pulled Hamed over for swerving his vehicle while driving.
The Police in Detroit are yet another problem going downhill. The size of the police team in Detroit has been cut by about 40 percent in the last decade. In 2012 the emergency manager reported that the police department had about 2,030 employees. But city officials also stated that out of those 2,030 employees only about 33 percent was actually patrolling the city. If no officers are out controlling and making sure the city safe that just leaves room fo...
Even though there are positives to having public housing there are still some negatives that are present when looking at the way government is involved with housing programs. With having the federal government involved and giving up most of the responsibilities to provincial government it was a loss for the money that would be provided to fixing up and creating new public housing. Like in Regent Park a lot of the public housing that had been made by the federal government has been starting to be demolished to make areas that will bring in more economic
One of the first things we have learned about politics this semester is that there is a constant struggle over the true definition, especially in how broad or narrow the definition is. When Thomas Jefferson wrote that “Politics are such torment that I would advise everyone I love not to mix with them.” it is understood that he is referring to the electoral and governmental aspects of politics. If Dr. Michael Rivage-Seul and Leslie Cagan were to read this quote, they would argue that Jefferson has an extremely narrow view of politics and that if one were to desire a more accurate definition, they would have to look further than the restrictive culturally accepted definition. Martin Luther King, Jr. would also disagree with this definition but he I think he would have a bigger problem with the advice that Jefferson is giving. All three of the authors that we have looked at would, in one way or another, be forced to disagree with Jefferson based on the principles that they try to uphold and emphasize in their writings and speeches.
Every police force around the world is different from each other, simply because each notation needs its police force for something different. In the United States the police force was not needed in the being of the nation because most people lives on farms. However, as the population grows in the nation so did the need for protection within growing city limits. In the 21st century, broadcasting media has grown to become a major impact on how America views the tactics of the police force. Within the American Nation the Department of Justice plays a key role in the function of the American police. However, international the United Nations, which was formed when World War Two was end in 1945, 51 nations comes together to form the United Nations,
Security and safety are things that anyone and everyone are afforded to. It is a basic Human Right that everyone should have. The ones that are mostly responsible for making sure that everyone is safe and are protected are the police. Police officers are the ones that enforce the law, thus they have many powers granted to them. These powers also give the police the ability to decide to do something that is righteous, or something that the absolute opposite of what police officers are supposed to do and that is Police Brutality. Police Brutality is when police officers use excessive or unnecessary force when handling situations. This topic is one that is a common issue all around the world. With the technology that is widely available today,
On October 14, 2007, Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski was tased multiple times at the Vancouver International Airport, resulting in his death. This event of police brutality was captured on video and released to the public, causing significant international coverage and outrage. There have been 26 Taser-related fatalities in Canada ...
Public safety covers a wide variety of people and organizations, but carries one common theme and that is, the public’s safety. This course has broadened my knowledge on the many roles that make the public safety sector go around and the role the public plays in it as well. My thoughts before the course were close minded and to the point. I quickly realized that policing is not as cut and dry as I once portrayed it to be. Society is always changing and adapting, and it is the job of the those in public safety to adapt and change with it. The mindset that I grew up with, in rural Saskatchewan, was the police are good people and you will only need to deal with them if you break the law or see someone break the law. My answers in the module 1 survey reflected my upbringing. My first thought for
The United Nations Agenda 2030 is emerging as the slam dunk, in yo face blueprint for global government. Noble and lofty goals provide much mind boggling substantiated dialogue. Attempting to rid the world of poverty, and other noble feats by redistributing the wealth of the developed nations and their wage earners - which in turn, turns out to be not so noble of a feat. The U.N. is attempting to create a world where human habitats are safe, resilient and sustainable, as well as making cities safe! They actually believe they can do this in New Orleans, Chicago, St. Louis. Detroit, etc. within 15 years? This is where my mind was boggled. Unless all of the citizens (of the world) are implanted with auto-taze microchip implants (or some kind of implant/device that has the capability to turn the bad behavior into good), I don 't see this goal happening. Perhaps maybe a police officer installed in every household/dwelling in the world will make these cities safe. If the United Nations can go
I found this topic so interesting and motivating and I believe that I got some new knowledge and skills after attended this assignment topic. My experience has been successfully expanded as a result of attending classes, to include global approach to the international business. I found out that practice for international business has become little bit complicated due to influence of globalization.
