Nurses, are encouraged and required to undertake continuing professional development (CPD) to validate their fitness to practice. Also, showing if they have the required skills to fulfil their role, in providing the best standard of care (Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), 2013). I attend conferences, make use of study days and keep journals to feed my professional knowledge. Reflecting in my portfolio gives me the opportunity to log and reflect on my ongoing development for future practice. Reflective practice helps nurses to focus on their knowledge, skills and behaviour to ensure that they are able to meet the demands made on them by this commitment. Another usual reflective tool for future clinical practice, is part of the requirement for nurses to constantly to update professional skills. Taking part of research is best practice, which is key to learning and building upon my evidence-based knowledge. The use of a reflective model uses questions to provide a structure and guide for the process (Siviter, 2008, Pp. 121-139). There are numerous reflective models that I may use as a nursing professional, for example, Gibb's Reflective Cycle (1988) and Luft’s Johari Window Cycle (1955). I can apply the Gibbs's reflective cycle, 1988), as nurses must engage in the process of reflecting on how communication skills are utilised in practice. Gibb's model (Appendix A.) consists of six stages per cycle, guide a various questions, providing a structure for reflection on an experience. The first stage of the process is a descriptive account of the situation; what happened, Followed by an analysis of thoughts and feelings in the second stage; what were your thoughts and feelings. The third and fourth stages involve an evaluation of the situation, what was good and/or bad about the experience and an analysis allowing us to make sense of the situation. The last two stages are the conclusion of the situation, what else could have been done and finally an action plan to prepare for similar situations, which may arise in the future (Gibbs 1988).I could also apply the ‘Johari window’ model, used to expand the ‘open area’, without exposing information deemed to be personal. Senior nursing students will complete a QSEN weekly clinical journal requirement learn how to self-assess their progress toward demonstrating these nationally-based competencies. The students will select a different competency each week to address and discuss how they applied that competency to patient care or how they hope to better achieve that competency as a graduate nurse. It is essential for a nurse to be able to demonstrate and practice professional communication skills, provision of information and handover to provide a holistic approach to treating and caring for patients. Professional communication skills not only allows the nurse to provide different methods and tactics to communicate with patients of different needs and ages, but it enables the nurse to understand and to give the best possible care and outcome for the patient. Nurses today need to have excellent communication skills. Receiving information from patients is the most important aspect of nursing. If nurses are unable to communicate with their patient then they would not be able to have a relationship with them. Communication is where two or more people interact with each other, by using sounds and words, this is verbal communication. Some individuals have different behaviors where they try to express themselves to others without using spoken words, this is non verbal communication. Once nurses have the proper communication tools, techniques and evidence based practice, when communicating with their patient, they would get the necessary information needed from the patient to properly diagnosis them.
As mentioned by Hunter and Arthur (2016), one of the main reasons I could maintain and improve my practice was due to clinical placements. During clinical placements we are frequently being assessed and taught in dealing with real situations. Feelings As learning is a lifelong process, I’m sure there are many things I need to improve and learn to better myself. However, the lessons I learned during the course as a nursing student shall always remain as a bedrock for my future development.
Reflective Practice is a continuous action that directly affects anyone who is a practitioner. Jasper (2006, p. 53) stated that the benefits to the profession are the development of the nursing knowledge base and the recognition that nurses are contributing to both patient care and improved practice. Further, Jasper (2006, p. 43) explains that Reflective Practice is the foundation upon which reflection and reflective learning are based.
A study conducted by academics found that undergraduate nurses feel reflection is the key to changing and improving their practice. Bulman, Lathlean, & Gobbi, 2011. Reflection assists nurses to enhance their nursing abilities by encouraging them to reflect on negative experiences, in order to overcome similar experiences in the future. This essay will aim to demonstrate the importance of reflection within nursing, providing me with a platform to reflect on my decision to become a nurse. I will begin by reflecting upon the factors that influenced me to choose nursing, followed by an explanation of the benefits that reflection has on nursing.
Communication in the nursing practice and in healthcare is important because when talking with patients, their families, and staff, the nurse and the nursing student needs to be able to efficiently express the information that they want the other person to understand. “Verbal communication is a primary way of transmitting vital information concerning patient issues in hospital settings” (Raica, 2009, para. 1). When proper communication skills are lacking in nursing practice, the chances of errors and risks to the patient’s safety increases. One crucial aspect of communication that affects the patient care outcome is how the nurse and the nursing student interacts and communicates with the physicians and other staff members. If the nurse is not clear and concise when relaying patient information to other members of the healthcare team the patient care may be below the expected quality.
Reflection encourages the student to acknowledge and act upon their strengths and weaknesses in their ability to make clinical decisions (3). As the student reflects it allows them to focus their attention on areas where they have both succeeded and struggled in the clinical setting and apply direct relation to how much knowledge they have gained from the experience (3). Furthermore, whilst it also also allows the student the ability to pose questions, seek clarification of specific events, find meaning and discuss matters of concern and interest with their preceptors in their reflective writing (3). Nonetheless, it is not until the student has achieved the additional knowledge that they will fully understand the limitation of their own practice (3).
