In "From the Reservation: A Theory Regarding the Development of Native American Students," the author argues that Native American students are an underrepresented population in higher education. The author suggests that there has been little research conducted on the underrepresented minority, native American students. Cultural dissonance is the term that the author uses when describing the conflict that occurs when native american students are expected to fit into the American educational standards while also trying to maintain their unique cultural standards. This theory has four stages in total and the first three of them are the same as the three described in Goodmans Model. Horse did change the names of the stages, as well as add the fourth model. Horse basically just used the Goodman model but then modified it so that it would apply to Native American Students. The first stage described in the theory is the departing stage. At this stage the individual is departing or leaving their majority culture to go live somewhere else as a minority. This theory focuses on students that move to go to learn at a predominantly white institution. This first stage is all about an individual deciding if they want to attend college outside of their reservation. In the article "From the Reservation: A Theory Regarding the Development of Native American Students” there are many reasons given as to why a student would choose to go to college or to stay home. Some of the reasons that it mentions are the individual, community, family, and tribe. These factors all play a role in the individual's decision on whether they want to attend college and leave their home or not. The text gives an example of a student who chooses to move away from her home town. In the example given, the student states that she chose to leave her reservation so that she can contribute to her tribe in the future(Brayboy, 2004). This …show more content…
