This observation took place Monday February 8, at Betty Plasencia afterschool program, approximately 4:00 pm. I began my observation when the children had free play. I focused my observation on Jose and Juan, who were standing behind the fence of the soft ball field. I am assuming they are approximately eight or nine years of age with no visible disabilities.
Jose and Juan were standing approximately two feet way form the home plate fence. Jose asks Juan “Do you know how to hit? Like he does?” Looking toward the boy who was swinging the bat in home plate. The boy in home base swings the bat and smacks the ball really hard sending to the outfield. “I dunno how to play” said Juan. “Yes you can, I have seen you play baseball at the park!” said

Another boy in the opposite team said “Swing! Swing!” in a squeaky voice. Another child shouted “I bet you he won’t hit the ball, he is little.” “Shut up Marvin!” yelled Jose. “He is my friend, I showed him how to hit,” Jose yelled again. Juan yelled “Ready!” The pitcher pitched the soft ball at a fast speed towards Juan. Juan swung the bat hard and smacked the softball landing in the outfield. Juan stood there for a few seconds with a surprised look on his face. “Run, hurry, run, run, shouted Jose and the other children on their team. Jose jumped up and down with excitement. Juan ran all around the bases quickly and when he got to home plate, his team cheered loudly. Jose walked up Juan as he is walked toward the back of home plate. Jose and Juan simultaneously raise their hands and give a high five with a big smile on their face.
Jose grabs the bat and walks towards the batters box. A child from the opposing team yells out “I bet you a hundred dollars you can’t hit!” Jose turned around and shrugged his shoulders. A child bigger then Jose sitting on the opposing team side stood up and said loudly, “We are going to win, because I am bigger, and better than you.” Jose rolled his eyes and whispered “whatever.” The pitcher pitched the softball at a fast speed, Jose swung the bat and smacked the ball all the way to the

They were quickly distracted from this responsibility however by the performance of the man on the pitcher’s mound. Fernando Valenzuela was a pudgy teenage boy who had grown up on the dusty baseball fields of northwestern Mexico. From a young age, he had dreamed of playing professional baseball and he was about to get his chance. The warm summer evening. The butterflies in the stomach. The determination and desire to win. This is a moment that many young men experience - Little League Baseball. But, unfortunately, schools lacking funding are looking to cut costs by getting rid of youth sports. That is when Dick’s Sporting Goods, a company with resources to bring attention to this problem, steps up to bat. Their message is effective through the emotional and ethical tie it creates in the audience through the story of a young man who overcomes tragedy through succeeding on the baseball diamond. Relying heavily on pathos and ethos, this message touches the hearts of the audience, calling them to step up as well.
Hutch, the main character of The Big Field, has played baseball all of his life. He has always played shortstop, the same position that his father dreamed of playing as a professional. “Hutch, had always thought of himself as the captain of any infield he’d ever been a part of” (Lupica 1). Hutch finds himself being demoted to second base because there is another player, Darryl, on his new team that is expected to go pro and also plays shortstop. Hutch struggles because he does not want to play second base and his father does not support him because he does not want baseball to break Hutch’s dreams like it did his own. Hutch is betrayed by his father and Darryl when he finds them practicing together. Hutch has to learn to adjust and eventually becomes friends with Darryl, the up and coming shortstop. He understands that if he wants to win, then he needs to work together with Darryl. His father also comes around and finally gives Hutch his approval. Students should read this book in a high school English classroom because it demonstrates how relationships can be difficult, but teamwork can help to solve many issues.
Both the boys school's treat the importance of the game of softball very differently. Mr. Galanter, the coach for Reuven's team, treats the game like war, and in turn his team does too. "No holes...what kind of solid defense is that? Close in. A battleship could go in between you and Malter..." (Potok, 14)
After the child ventured away from his grandmother, someone tried to interact with the child, but had no success; he shied away. However, minutes later the child slowly returned to the person that tried to interact with him and started to initiate interaction with the person. Once the child initiated interaction, he started to express his verbal skills (which are very well developed for a two-year old). The child wanted to play on the play-set (a swing and slide) in the yard so; he pointed to the play-set and said “let’s go there”. He quickly ran to the play-set in complete excitement with a huge smile on face. Once there, he hesitated before he started playing. I had played softball in P.E. enough to know the basics…or so I thought. I stood there leaning against my bat listening to Coach McGownd talk. As he talked I began absorbing everything he said. Gone were the days of simply stepping up to the plate to hit. Now, each at bat had a purpose and guidelines to follow in order to maximize the batters chance of successfully hitting the ball. There was so much information—proper stance, proper mechanics, how to set up in the batters box based on what you wanted to do (i.e. bunt, pull the ball, hit opposite, slap hit), and so much more. When Coach McGownd finished giving us our instructions, we shuffled off to our assigned station and began doing our assigned drills. I happily watched as the older, more experienced players took their swings. The sweet pinging of the metal bats against the balls and laughter blanketed the field. I patiently waited as the older players took their turns. When my turn came I picked up my bat, stepped up to the tee and followed along as my brain got its clipboard out and started checking off each step I had just learned. I took my swing and was awarded with a nice popping sound as I made contact with the ball. I knew then, that this sound of the bat making contact with a ball would become one of my favorite sounds. “One good play,” said the Phillies manager. For the first time all game Jackie Robinson entered the on deck circle. Fans from across the stadium booed very loudly. Although there were many familiar faces in the crowd that were cheering and routing for him. After Jackie Robinson’s teammate hit into a double play Jackie came up to the plate with two outs and no runners on base. As soon as Robinson approached the plate he was thrown off by the look and posture the manager gave him. The Phillies manager came out of the dugout and just looked at him. After one huge swing Jackie turned to see the wide smirk on the Phillies manager’s face.
The living room was dark and the only thing you could see was the brightness of the TV. Also, I could still hear many people talking from down stairs, fire truck siren going off, and the city lights that were still shining bright. At the age of seven, on a cold Friday night in Brooklyn; my mom, cousin, and I started watching some scary movies since it was around Halloween. There was this movie called “Child’s Play” and as a child, I didn’t like the movie at all due to the fact that there was an ugly doll that was moving and killing people. During, that weekend it was showing marathons all weekend long since it was the Halloween weekend. The bed was pulled out with all the warm blankets and snacks besides us waiting for the move to start.
From the moment I was born I was destined to become a softball player. My dad is from the Dominican Republic. In his country baseball is the national sport. People expect Dominicans to play baseball. Therefore, it didn’t come to a surprise when my dad began to influence me to play softball at a young age. My dad played a significant role in developing my interest in softball which allowed me to become skillful in catching and throwing. From the moment I was born I began my journey to becoming skillful at this. Skills I acquired at a young age would later encourage the development of my proficiency in catching and throwing. Throughout this paper I will tell the story of how I progressed to each period on the “Mountain of Motor Development.” This “mountain” is a metaphor of the sequence I followed that helped me build up my skills. In Jary’s Jargon, Jahaira (Jary) Molina is an eleven years old who moves to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Jairy who grew up in New York finds herself overwhelmed by the difference from New York to San, Juan. Jary thought that she would fit in because she spoke the language. The only problem was her Spanish was funny and filled with English words, in other words she spoke what, “Spanglish”. The other children spoke and sang funny songs that did not make sense to her. In one occasion Jary was outside getting ready to play recess when she noticed all the other kids playing a game, as she tried to join in the children seem to speak Spanish so fast that Jary could not understand. One of the boys in her team became upset with Jary for not understanding and made fun of her. All the children laughed, and Jary at first did not even know what he was saying. She caught on fast that they were making fun of her and she began to run towards the bathroom with tears in her eyes.
The following comments are the result of observations and interviews done to a four year old Hispanic-American child, and his mother on February 13 & 14, 2014. Physically, the child seems healthy; his height is 44 inches tall and weighs 42.5 pounds. According the National Center for Health Statistics’ chart, the child has a healthy weight, although he is a bit higher than the norm. At this age height ranges between 40 inches high, and proper weight should be 40 pounds, (Cook & Cook, 2010). The child does not show delays in his gross motor and fine motor skills. He can jump, run, roll, balance, climb, throw and catch balls with assurance. His eye-hand and eye-foot coordination also look good. He can string small beads, colors very well with crayons, and write his name with a regular pencil. All these are on par with typical skills for this age, (“Best of child”, 2003; PBS, n.d.).
Albert Einstein believed that “play is the highest form of research.” For a small child there is not an exact division between the things that are educational and the things that he or she does for fun or play. Through living and playing a child is learning and developing in many ways. Through analyzing the play episodes of a four year old girl named Noelle, I was able to relate my observations to research and theory regarding the development and benefits of play that influence the social, emotional, and cognitive development of children. The different types and classifications of play occur throughout different stages of a child’s development.
I encountered a “bump in the road” at a young age. I began playing softball at age six when Kylie, my elementary school friend, came to show and tell with her first place T-ball trophy. At the time, I had only played soccer, but the thought of swinging a bat as hard as I could and having people in the stands cheer for me, inspired me to ask my mother to register me for the local recreational league. Before I knew it, I was lacing up last year’s soccer cleats and stepping up to bat in my first coach-pitch softball game. My father, being the coach, stood on the mound and lobbed in the fattest meatball every hitter dreams of. With the ding of my second-hand garage sale bat, the ball sailed over the shortstop. Some may have called it beginner's luck, but I called it a sign.
