Young Jackie Robinson grew up in Pasadena California. However he was born in Cairo Georgia. As life went on he turned himself into a great baseball player. Throughout high school he played multiple sports and excelled in all of them. In high school he was a star shortstop. He won a championship for his basketball team, and won the junior boys singles tournament, in the Pacific Coast Negro Tennis League. He was also great at track and was a star quarterback. Jackie Robinson played with self discipline on the field. Later in his career he began to focus on one sport, baseball. Players in the club house gave cringe smiles and shook their heads. There was one individual that did come up to Jackie Robinson.
“Hi, I’m Reese,” the young white man explained. “But you can call me Pee Wee.”
“Great,” added Jackie. The game had and early shift after the opposing team hit a three run home run to center field. Jackie started the game out playing shortstop. He made a terrific stop and throw to first base.
“Wow, that kid can play!”
“One good play,” said the Phillies manager. For the first time all game Jackie Robinson entered the on deck circle. Fans from across the stadium booed very loudly. Although there were many familiar faces in the crowd that were cheering and routing for him. After Jackie Robinson’s teammate hit into a double play Jackie came up to the plate with two outs and no runners on base. As soon as Robinson approached the plate he was thrown off by the look and posture the manager gave him. The Phillies manager came out of the dugout and just looked at him. After one huge swing Jackie turned to see the wide smirk on the Phillies manager’s face.
“You can’t play ball, you don’t belong here,” howled the Phillies
