To the patrol officer on a beat, oral and written communication are both important in the day to day functions of their job duties.The one that is most important though is oral communication. Oral communication is key for the patrol officer. They are a public servant and need to be able to communicate orally on a daily basis with a diverse group of people that they may encounter. The officer who makes the mistake on a police report that he/she wrote is responsible for correcting that mistake. At no time should anybody but the writer of the police report make any changes. If changes were to be made to the report by any other person but the writer, the report would be falsified and it will discredit the officer and the department. At no time should an officer change his or her report unless there is a valid mistake. If there is a mistake an additional new report clarifying changes would need to be written by the officer. The role of the Officer 's Supervisor is to proof read the report and mark grammatical errors, punctuation, and recommend verbiage, but never to change a report. The role of the prosecutor who tries the case is to to use the report against the defense and has no right to make any changes. Their sole responsibility is to interpret the report and use it as a reference as to what occurred.

Well, I scored a 63 on the Communication Quiz and was rated as excellent. Times have changed; crime has evolved into a multifaceted issue with deep seeded roots. Today, law enforcement officers have additional responsibilities with greater expectations. It is no longer just about bravery, but about the ability to make complex, legal decisions in the midst of danger and chaos. Officers are now required to complete many hours of training regarding detention, arrest, search and seizure, emergency vehicle operations and defensive tactics.
