In 2013, I decided to attend Fork Union Military Academy (FUMA) which is located in Fork Union, VA. I was a part of their student body for three consecutive years, over the course of those three years I learned four traits that not many teenagers develop at my age. I learned how to Respect others, and treat them exactly how I would like to be treated. Integrity, which is to do the right thing even when no one else is looking. Faith is having trust, and confidence in anything that you do. Lastly, I have Discipline. Having discipline is doing something not because you want to do it, but because you need to do it. These traits will get you far in life, and luckily I have those traits. Secondly, I am dedicated. When I say dedicated, I actually mean that I push myself to limits higher than you can imagine. Of course there were people in my life that taught me these qualities, but each one was shown to me through a different person. I brought everything together and became my own hero to look up

Dictionaries’ definitions of the word hero are exceedingly vague. A standard dictionary limits the definition of a hero to, “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities” (Dictionary.com). Heroes are people, not just men, who are generous, courageous, and take every event as part of the whole stream of life rather than as a critical moment. Humanity, endurance, and perseverance are other critical characteristics of a deserving candidate for such a title.
Throughout the years, being a hero and the ideals of heroism have been subject to many changes. Many cultures differ on their views of what it takes to be a “hero.” Such as how The Odyssey by Homer, The Ramayana, and the present day have a view on heroes. Today we look up to our men in uniform and ordinary lay people, but as children we would marvel at the abilities of the “knights in shining armor” and idolize them as our heroes. With all these different beliefs it all brings us back to one question, what makes someone a hero? Meriam Webster…defines a hero “as a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities”.
