A lot of high school students take a foreign language because they need it for college, but is this requirement necessary? Many colleges require two to three years of foreign language with some Ivy League and others requiring up to four years. This requirement seems like a lot, and it takes up space in one’s schedule. Most high schoolers want this requirement abolished, but it has some benefits. Colleges should require students to have studied foreign language because students will be able to explore different cultures, knowing two or more languages helps with test scores, and students will have more career opportunities.

Some opponents say that for most jobs in the US, knowing a foreign language doesn’t matter because most people in the US know English. Many jobs might not require an employee to be bilingual, but it is a great asset to many companies. Now those people who say that they don’t need to be bilingual may be right, but Kostiuk made a good point in the article she writes: “Other fast-growing fields like travel and tourism, healthcare and national security need employees with bilingual language skills and the ability to work across cultures. Fields such as journalism, education and international development are always in search of bilingual employees” (Kostiuk). All of these fields and more search for bilingual people to hire. As stated in an article by Auburn University, “Four out of five new jobs in the US are created as a result of foreign trade” (Latimer).
