The federal government has over time become strict on the regulation of food and food safety. With that being said, this is an improvement on how these agencies or departments are improving our everyday lives. The Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention all take part within food regulation and food safety. Each of these departments and agencies of food regulation and food safety each take part in, Food Safety Modernization Act, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Healthy and Hunger Free Kids Act, and Food advertising for Children.

Americans were safe and to put a stop to foodborne illnesses around the world. This Act’s main purpose and obligation has been to prevent any bad outcomes in the future, so that there will be no problems. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), will have the authority to make changes and enforce all regulations. Whether, if it is for food facilities, taking food safety measures, or from the attempt to prevent contamination. The Food and Safety Modernization Act, was last updated in 1938, but there has been quite a bit of changes and new discoveries within our food industry. In January 2013, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) presented a rule proposing the Food Safety Modernization Act, however, the original act ruling was revaluated and they added onto the ruling in 2014 (1). The Food and Drug Administration added onto the ruling combining both old and new to improve its quality and make it more accessible for the food industry (1). A big part of the Food Safety Modernization Act is that for example, once food is transported from a farm to a kitchen table or a grocery store; this act is put into place and was created to be a solution to many health problems around the world by preventing future pathogens that pass through with these foods. These pathogens can be effecting your family, friends, and even yourself so having this act proposed and put into action will help prevent future illnesses for many people. As the world is growing and advancing, the food industry must evolve with it as well.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) created a program called, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This program was first thought of and put into action in 1939. This act later became permanent and passed as an actual act in 1964 (2). This act was created to provide food to people all around the United States who are not in the right stand point to be able to purchase any foods themselves. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), is one of the largest programs like this in the United States and is such a good source for the food industry when there are food purchases being made. This program is a huge support system to many families, but also to other older people with disabilities who just may not be able get their usual food needs, and that is when they are given the opportunity to use the program. If given the opportunity to participate with this Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), supports the individual or family and really presents the idea of working and becoming employed. The main controversy that this program has is the decision that the house must make in debating whether or not to make SNAP cuts or to continue funding the program how it is. Some people have argued that this is necessary and that this program was created to help the lower income people all around the United …show more content…
States, and also if it was not for SNAP then there would be a lot of pressure on the food banks and charitable systems. However, other people argued that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program needs some limit because it has gone way too far way to fast, and that can become a huge concern budgeting wise (6). However, the program really encourages healthy eating habits and living a healthy lifestyle. The foods that are encouraged to buy and what are most purchased for a healthy nutritious meal. For example, vegetables, fruits, meats, and whole grains, all requirement items for a good balanced healthy diet (3). This program is able to tie in all aspects and qualities of being able to help out these families and also helping and providing these people or individuals with the knowledge on the right foods and food regulations. Each of these different programs have a motive to them.
Everyone of these are encouraging healthy eating habits and discussing different food regulations in some way. The Healthy and Hunger Free Kids Act, was put into place by the United States Department of Agriculture. The Hunger Free Kids Act, was presented in 2010, However was first proposed as the Child Nutrition and WIC reauthorization act in 2004 (4). The reason for the change was because it wanted to be presented as a growing problem for all kids not only in small children. This program is intended for school programs to be able to use and take advantage of. A controversy that takes place with this act is bridging the gap between summer and hunger. Bridging the gap between summer and hunger, is a solution to many children’s or even adult’s problems. For example, during the summer many people are not on a usual daily schedule that they are used to, and tend to stray from healthy eating habits. Therefore, the summer nutrition program was created to help benefit the kids. The summer nutrition program is not only there for nutritional needs, but also there for educating the children still as well even throughout the summer and if their parents are working. The Hunger Free Kids Act, is a way for the the school to get involved and for them to set rules and future nutrition standards and goals that they wish to achieve. The schools are now monitoring and setting guidelines that must be followed. They are following set food
regulations, encouraging, and educating kids of all ages around the school about living a healthier lifestyle, watching what you eat, and even encouraging them to start exercising more on a daily basis to go along with eating well. Most kids go to school, and are in school for up to 12 years until they graduate, so a smart place to really advertise and promote healthy eating and making students more aware of obesity that can effect them later on or even when they least expect it (5). Children can become very aware of their surroundings and are very influenced on things they see or have heard. Which leads to the Food advertising for Children, this has been an issue for quit sometime. Some advertisements seen on the media will not benefit kids in anyway. Not only are these advertisements coming from commercials or the radio, but also from social media as well. For example, McDonalds or any other fast food restaurants gives away a free toy with every kids meal purchased. Therefore, children see this toy, they could honestly care less about the meal, because they are clearly getting it for the fun of having a new play toy. This is just a way these places advertise and really market to these younger kids. Kids are very easily influenced, and if they see something on T.V. that just looks amazing to them and will draw their attention they will easily be attracted to it and want it. It is estimated that a child observes around 20,000 commercials within a year (8). With that being said, it is crazy how much of an effect and influence these commercial advertisements can have upon a young child (8). Therefore, this is why media now days should resort to smarter choices and advertisements that will benefit kids not hinder them. Putting out better advertising can change the mindsets of the youth, and lead them to smarter decisions, eating habits, and a healthier lifestyle, and future. Because the federal government has over time become strict on the regulation of food and food safety. With that being said, this is an improvement on how these agencies or departments are improving our everyday lives. The Food and Drug Administration, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention all take part within food regulation and food safety. Using these aspects of food regulation and food safety help each of these topics, Food Safety Modernization Act, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Healthy and Hunger Free Kids Act, and Food advertising for Children each of these programs that the federal government can help provide people all over the United States with better eating habits and lifestyle choices.
Today SNAP is the new name of the federal Food Stamp Program. “SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The name was changed to SNAP to meet the needs of clients, which includes a focus on nutrition and an increase in the amount of benefit received” ("supplemental nutrition,"2011). Another detail about SNAP is its ability to respond to changing needs caused by economic cycles or natural emergencies on the local, state and national levels. It is second to unemployment insurance in its responsiveness to economic changes. SNAP is very helpful to low-income families’ monthly resources, increasing the chance families is able to meet basic needs.
The Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act has taken over schools nationwide and needs to be stopped. There are more negatives than positives that go along with this act and there needs to be an end. Schools should not have to waste money on expensive food to have it not be eaten. Students should be able to enjoy what the lunchroom has to offer. The students do not buy these lunches so the food goes to waste. In 2012, when the Healthy Hunger Free-Kids Act was made students stopped eating their school lunches and schools began to lose great amounts money. It 's beneficial to encourage healthy eating habits with schools but this act needs to be reformed.

The act of manufactures labeling of our foods products in terms of the ingredients a particular product contains and the nutritious facts is sometimes taken for granted, we often see the labels on our food products, but ignore them because we’re so used to seeing them in our daily lives. Surprisingly, food product labeling, specifically that pertaining to allergen warnings, were not always available to consumers until a government mandate in 2004 (FALCPA). I think part of the reason for such a lateness in regulation was due to a social stigma regarding allergies, that having them was some sort of natural selection and not an issue that should be taken care of. Another surprising notion I came across was that although there was no government regulation, manufactures of food products took a good amount of initiative in letting their consumers know of potential allergens in their products.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA or USFDA) is a federal agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, one of the United States federal executive departments. The FDA is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety, tobacco products, dietary supplements, prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceutical drugs (medications), vaccines, biopharmaceuticals, blood transfusions, medical devices, electromagnetic radiation emitting devices (ERED), cosmetics, animal foods & feed and veterinary products.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program helps to ensure that the social minimum: bodily health is being achieved. SNAP was created to provide a way that low-income families can afford food and be adequately nourished. Also, in a utilitarianism perspective, SNAP is offered to all people as long as they can meet the eligibility requirements of the program. This ensures that the program is open to all people and that all have a fair chance at obtaining if they meet the requirements. In regards to deontological social justice, the social minimum of bodily health is met by providing people with the funds to purchase notorious foods. Then with the original position argument, SNAP benefits are given to low-income households because they have a greater need for the benefits than households with higher income. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program allows for people to have a chance to meet the social minimums that all people should be able to

The FDA regulates and monitors food safety in the US. Because food safety is a priority in this country, by law, factories are obligated to follow the needed steps to prevent any safety issues from occurring (FDA, 2015).
The Food Safety Modernization Act strives to make sure that the U.S. food supply is safe by redirecting the efforts of federal regulators from responding to contamination, to preventing it. There are four main elements of the Act. The first element provides new FDA controls over imported foods and six hundred foreign facility inspections (Levitt, 2011). The amount of inspections is proposed to double every year for five years. Under the Food Safety Modernization Act, new fees will be issued to food companies. Food companies will be required to have export certificates. Other fees will be associated with importation of foods (Levitt, 2011). However, the new act will allow for a fast lane for imports for those companies that subject themselves to more intense inspection and participate in the qualified importer program. Overall, the act will provide the FDA with more enforcement powers (Levitt, 2011). Power will come in the form of increased inspections of both domestic and foreign facilities and mandatory recalls if the FDA suspects a food, drug, or beverage may be tainted. Lastly, under the new act, ...
It is regarded as temporary help and it is attached with stigma. Snap would be considered residual welfare. Institutional welfare is seen as normal way of fulfilling social needs. There tends to be no stigma attached and it is services that all categories of people. As recently announced lunch will be free for every child in NYC public schools regardless of income. Prior to this school year some families had to pay for lunch depending on income. Additionally for the children that did qualify for the free lunch sometimes skipped out of not eating for fear of bullying or the stigma that comes along with subsidized school meals. This universal lunch program will meet the universal needs of children. Universal welfare are services that do not require children or families to meet specific eligibility criteria. It is available for all and attracts all categories of people such as public education. On the other hand, selective programs are eligibility determined on a case-to-case basis. In order for one to qualify for SNAP they are screened
The FDA most definitely has the important task to assure U.S. citizens the availability of safe food and drugs. This importance was realized by the men that worked toward moving it into legislation. The resultant agency continued to enforce its policies consistently into the modern century without a loss of momentum. However if the FDA is impaired by means of a governmental shutdown then it is of great importance to continue the consistency in food and drug standards that it holds. Standards that hold great importance today like the standards of the FDA’s initiation.

For decades the United States of America has stressed the importance of food safety by discovering and preventing outbreaks. Fifteen states have united with the CDC food safety programs to get ahead of persevering foodborne epidemics. The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) empowers the FDA to better defend public health by firming up the food safety system. Congress has shown explicit enactment dates in the legislation. Some establishments will go into effect swiftly, such as the FDA’s new ability to command companies to recall food, and others entail the FDA to concoct and distribute regulations and guidance documents. One out of five Americans are falling ill each year because of foodborne illnesses
RM: I agree that food safety is important. However, as I have stated before it is the market that should promote food safety not government regulations and legal liabilities. This will promote a free society and economy. The free market will ultimately protect the consumer’s interest out of the companies’ interest to sell their goods to a wider verity of people. According to McFadden and Stefanou (2016), there are several examples where the free market is working in favor of higher quality foods.
In order to work in a USDA facility, one must attend an accredited college or university to earn a bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field of study. Recommended fields of study include food safety, food science, microbiology, applied foods and environmental health. One career path for a food inspector is to the consumer safety inspector position. Consumer safety inspectors work in one or more privately owned meat, poultry, and egg processing plants. They ensure the plant is operating within its written plans for HACCP, sanitation, and processing. The U. S. Food and Drug Administration publishes the Food Code, a model that assists food control jurisdictions at all levels of government by providing them with a scientifically sound technical and legal basis for regulating the retail and foodservice segment of the industry. Local, state, tribal, and federal regulators use the FDA Food Code as a model to develop or update their own food safety rules and to be consistent with national food regulatory
