Background: Food allergies are something that is well known among children and it used to have an impact on the life and health of the affected child in school. This has massively increased and still on the rise. The best food facts (2015) clarifies that the risen of allergies started between the year of 1997 to 2011 and the roughly percentage is 50%. Food allergies have been review that they are very common among in children than adults.
Objective: The intention of this project is to look at the food allergies, how they have changed, the impact of it on a school child health, the provision school gave the child and the way forward for the school: practitioner’s awareness of age (3- 4 years old).

Allergens are any food that is capable of causing an allergic reaction. There are eight foods that cause these reactions (NHS, 2016). However, intolerance symptoms are something that is less serious and often limited to digestive problems (Emerton, 2002). Allergies have enormously increased among children in the past few years.
This will be expanded further in my chapters. In order to demonstrate the meaning of this proposed study, a literature search was conducted. The search terms included in this review will be the key terms taken from the question “Food allergies and the school child”. All the searches in this literature review would be taken from books, through questionnaires, journals, articles and website in order to make sure that the aims of the study are met. The age range of this literature review on the school child would be a three-year-old.
The study sets out to explore food allergies and the school child. In order to gain a true insight into best practice. There is a need to explore on this topic because allergies are very common among children. As some parents worry about how their child with a food allergy will be cared for outside the home by other people (Johnson, 2010). For example, checking the label of the food before offer it to the child and see if the food is safe for a school child with allergies. This will also help to determine whether to give the food or not. The project will also help to reduce the anxiety and concern parent have about their child with food allergies in school (Coss, 2004).
As a practitioner to be in early years I will gain a greater understanding of how to develop relevant care effectively to support a child with food allergies. The knowledge gain from this project will be useful not only for the child with an allergy, but for me and with other children that might have allergies later in future while at school, nursery or other children’s care settings (Trone and Acebal , 2011).
The project will also support better knowledge and understanding of the impact of food allergies for me and for others who are working with children age three years old in early years setting (Grix, 2010). Following my first sip of milk at the age of one, with the resulting hives and coughing that ensued, I involuntarily joined the community of fifteen million Americans afflicted by food allergies. Living everyday with additional allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish has, out of necessity, sharpened my compulsiveness with ingredients and food preparation, but furthermore has spurred me to intervene on behalf of fellow members in this emerging epidemic. Food allergy or hypersensitivity refers to the abnormal allergic reaction of the body’s immune system to a usually harmless food such as milk, eggs, peanuts, and fish. Food allergens that cause allergic reactions are usually proteins and this can cause adverse effects even if cooked or have been digested. Dairy allergens include milk and milk proteins that are found in cows, sheep, goat, and other grazing mammals that produce milk. Milk allergy symptoms may differ from person to person and it sometimes occur a few minutes to a few hours after ingestion. Principal symptoms are mostly respiratory, gastrointestinal and dermatological. After consuming milk, some symptoms may immediately surface like hives, vomiting and wheezing. In some cases, signs and symptoms may take longer period of time to develop such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, itchy skin rash and loose stools, which may contain blood. For babies, colic also surfaces much longer than most symptoms thus parents should be more alert for signs of milk allergy. Rarely, milk allergies can trigger anaphylaxis, which is a severe reaction that can be life-threatening. It is best to consult your doctor even if there is only mild reaction. This is to avoid potentially worse reaction in the future and also to know the steps in avoiding its recurrence.
A good meal is very important because it health children’s to grow and develop an awareness of healthy eating habits for life. Also, eating at home it helps children’s to have a good attitude because they are eating a well balance meal and at the same time prevents obesity. Meals prepare at home contains a lot of vegetable and fruits and they are usually not fried. Parents and teachers can be involved in the healthy education of their children. Parents and teachers can establish a daily schedule of meals and snack time because it provides the opportunity to learn from one another. Also, encourage children in learning about new food is very important but without forcing them to eat. Trying foods from other countries can help children’s in learn about a new culture. For example, Salvadorian and Mexican beans contain a lot of iron and fiber and are very important for every one health. Furthermore, caretakers and parents can improve their menu by providing more fruit, vegetables, fat-free dairy and whole grains in order to have a healthy life style.
I chose this topic because it is something I knew of and have seen before, but never really knew much about it. Nutrition also plays an important role in student health. Proper nutrition promotes optimal growth and development of children. Researchers generally find that a higher quality diet is associated with better performance on academic test scores and that nutritional status can directly affect mental capacity among school age children (Frisvold). In the United States, over three million people are diagnosed with food allergies every year, and over 50 million people have an allergy to some type of food. This number includes one in every 13 children. Most people are born with their allergies; however, allergies can develop at any age, and that is what happened to me. I developed an allergy when I was 14 years old. It was then that some troubling and deleterious side effects started happening to me. When people develop food allergies, their immune systems overreact to normally harmless food proteins. (foodallergy.org). These attacks can affect people in a multitude of ways; they can cause hives, difficulty in breathing, stomach aches, and many more symptoms.

Human race is known to have developed numerous allergies to various known and unknown allergens. An extreme allergic reaction which can be “life-threatening”. (Mydr.com.au, 2014) is referred to as Anaphylaxis.It is a “medical emergency”(Lloyd & Sisman,2013).Statistics indicate that maximum deaths occur due to allergic reactions of various medicines. The other causative agents can be insects, food, latex, hair dye, etc(Lloyd & Sisman,2013). The most common trigger to stimulate anaphylaxis among children are food products such as peanuts, dairy, seafood etc. Exposure to any of these allergens can result in severe anaphylactic attack within 20 minutes.(Australian Resuscitation council, 2012).However the doctors discuss the history of symptoms occurring in children suffering with peanut allergy before declaring them to be anaphylactic and prescribing medication. (Unknown, 2014). Symptoms of anaphylaxis may occur in varied forms depending upon the severty of the reaction. For instance in mild cases swelling of lips, eyes or face occurs along with hives, rash, tingling of mouth and vomitting accompanied with abdominal pain. Nevertheless in extreme conditions the former symptoms may be accompanied with noisy breathing, wheezing, hoarseness and unconsciousness. (Lloyd & Sisman,2013).
Have you ever tasted school cafeteria food? I don’t think you would want to. In school story books, do you have characters saying that the food tasted good at school cafeterias? Nope. Why is this? Cafeteria food is often cheap, bought in bulk, high in calories, malnutritious, and microwaved. Student polls and opinions prove this. Therefore, this leads to a suggestion: Healthier, tastier foods and a better, advanced lunch system should be implemented.
Allergies are especially unique in the medical field because they differ among patients. An allergy is a specific immunologic reaction to a normally harmless substance, one that does not bother most people. People with allergies are often sensitive to many substances. Common allergens that cause allergic reactions include seasonal, outdoor allergens like tree, grass, and weed pollen, and year-round indoor allergens including dust particles, animal dander, and indoor mold. Most people usually can be cured by various treatments.
The purpose of this study is to examine what are processed foods? What are the associated problems? Also, to determine if processed foods affect students’ health and their academic performance. In addition, what is the position of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and food industry in the distribution of processed foods in schools? Also, to determine the outcome of this study, the behavior and health of students along with the governing agencies were analyzed to establish, if processed foods should be banned from schools or just monitored carefully.

I want to investigate how schools and parents can work together to support healthy eating for young children. Many schools already have healthy eating initiatives in place, however, there is still a high percentage of children with obesity. I firmly believe that if schools and parents have a close partnership in promoting healthy eating young children will have consistency both in the school and home environment. Healthy eating is an area that I feel passionate about due to the effects poor nutrition can have on the child both in the short term and in the long term. During my second school placement, I witnessed a healthy eating initiative that was extremely successful both with the staff and the students. This has influenced my enthusiasm to promote healthy eating in the early years by including parents in order to combat the serious issue of childhood
