Flow Visualisation using Shadowgraphy Technique
Shadowgraphy is one of the optical techniques for observing a flow in a transparent medium. The basic apparatus consists of a light source and a recording plane onto which the shadow of the varying density field is projected. The technique is based on the variation in refractive index of the transparent media caused by density variation in the flow field. The experiment is carried out in the laboratory and density gradient is created by generating temperature gradient or any other means (diffusion of perfume). Though, shadowgraphy is not a suitable method for quantitative measurement of the fluid density but, is a convenient method of obtaining a quick survey of a flow in which the density changes in the described way. The relative changes in intensity of light in the plane of observation i.e. the shades of grey in shadowgraph is related to refractive index field which can be correlated to the required density field. This experiment aims to understand the basic principles of shadowgraphy and carry out simple data processing to get an insight into the shadowgraphy technique.

Introduction
Shadowgraphy - an optical measurement technique is a field measurement method (image forming method) based on variation of refractive index in the flow field. The density of a fluid varies with temperature, salinity, and pressure. And, the index of refraction changes with fluid density. If a screen is placed opposite the light source, these effects create shadows on the screen creating an image called a Shadowgraph. The image ca...

Prior to the invention of the daguerreotype, the Camera Obscura was the main optical instrument that was used to project images onto paper. The Camera Obscura was a device in the shape of a box that allowed light, which was being reflected from the images that the user was intending to capture, to enter through an opening at one end of the box to form an image on a surface and an artist would then trace the image to form the most accurate impression of an image at that peri...
Imagine being on the borderline of not being able to sustain your children for lack of money or making the money you need through an illicit way. Frozen River, a film directed by the Grand Jury Prize winner, Courtney Hunt, and released in 2008, takes place during a cold East Coast winter. The film focuses in the stories of two single mothers, who go far and beyond in the search of financial stability, to be able to make ends meet, and offer better living conditions to their sons. Single mothers, Ray and Lila, everyday lack money to support their family, leading them to work as smugglers of aliens, disregarding the consequences this work can bring. Hunt shows through the cinematography, the script, and the scenery that Ray and Lila—as single

Cody Blunt’s piece titled The Master of Shadows represents the assassin, Zed. This art piece was created in 2013 for the company Riot Games as the digital concept art for the character Zed. This piece can be found displayed as a representation of the character in their popular multiplayer online battle arena, League of Legends. In The Master of Shadows, Cody Blunt uses complementary colors, value, saturation, tenebrism, shape, and a small variety of different lines to capture the resting energy of Zed and provides a serene and mysterious interpretation of a lifeless city.
The character that will be focused on is Whip Whitaker in the movie Flight. Whip Whitaker is a male African-American, pilot that has no religious beliefs or spiritualism in the beginning of the film. Prior to his career with SouthJet Airlines, he was a pilot in the Navy. He is divorced with one son; in the beginning of the film he has a relationship with his co-worker, Katerina, and throughout the movie builds a new romantic relationship with Nicole. While he initially showed lack of faith throughout much of the movie, the change in Whip towards the end of the film demonstrates faith by facing the truth and allowing the higher power to be in control of the next events. Before admitting the truth in the hearing, he mutters “God help me” and proceeds to show integrity and courage despite knowing that the consequence for telling the truth will be jail time for him. He displays courage, valor, and expertise when he takes control of a crashing airplane and saves 96 out of 102 people on board the plane. When he finds out that Katerina as well as 5 other people have been killed, he shows toughness and resilience and is able to overcome the loss he experiences and the guilt he is ridden with. He is an experienced airplane pilot that is courageous, persistent, resilient, and at times, brutally honest. Whip’s coping mechanisms are denial, dissociation, acting out, displacement, and undoing. While he is going through an immensely tumultuous time, he displays resiliency and perseverance to overcome the legal ramifications of the airplane crash that he was piloting. Whip also displays kindness and courage when he rescues Nicole from her landlord that is attempting to beat her, without hesitation. He has diff...

He explored different art techniques, like s 'fumato, which used light and shadows for shading in the Mona Lisa, and is used commonly in art classes. His artwork is scattered throughout his notebooks in examples and diagrams. Da Vinci also studied optics, and incorporated his findings into his art. “The Codex Atlantis” was his journal on optics, and in it his work, experiments, and observations were stored. With his codex, he experimented on his intermission theory by injecting wax into the eye to see the ventricular system. In his painting “The Last Supper”, he used the linear perspective system to give depth to the figures in it. The biggest contribution that he made to optics was his camera obscura. It was a device that consisted of a box or room with a hole in one side. As light passes through the hole, it would create the image. This was the great invention that led to photography and the photographic
To understand this week’s experiment one must first understand what a spectroscope is and what it does. With this understanding in hand, one would gain a deeper appreciation for this lab and its intended lesson. “A spectroscope is a device that measures the spectrum of light” (Ball, 2014). More specifically a spectroscope is an instrument designed to split light from different sources into wavelengths. Humans are able to see these wavelengths as different colors. Noting the difference in colors between various light sources, those studying a given light source can identify elements of the light source.
My prediction of this experiment is that the results will be a minimum difference of 2-3 ml between each other at the beginning but when it comes down the middle there will be a difference of 4-5ml. This is because I believe that as there is more water at the start of the burette it will slow it down, but when coming down the middle it will go faster.

The Berlin Wall was constructed in 1961 by the GDR (German Democratic Republic - (East Germany) under the pretext of keeping out the fascist enemy infiltrating from West Germany. In actual fact, the wall was built to keep in the population of the GDR, many of whom were fleeing to a better life in West Berlin and other European Countries. Armed border guards were sworn to protect East Germany however they knew that a better life existed on the other side of the wall. The photographer, Peter Leibing, captured the moment in history, when the first GDR Border Guard , Conrad Schumann, finally got the courage to desert his post and leap over the barricade (at that point still a barbed wire fence).
Refraction of Light Aim: To find a relationship between the angles of incidence and the angles of refraction by obtaining a set of readings for the angles of incidence and refraction as a light ray passes from air into perspex. Introduction: Refraction is the bending of a wave when it enters a medium where it's speed is different. The refraction of light when it passes from a fast medium to a slow medium bends the light ray toward the normal to the boundary between the two media. The amount of bending depends on the indices of refraction of the two media and is described quantitatively by Snell's Law. (Refer to diagram below)
Part A of the experiment, we were measuring the density of water. In this part, we measured by difference by measuring the mass of the empty graduated cylinder which was 46.35 grams and then added 25.0 milliliters of water to it. When subtracting by difference, our mass of the water was 25.85 grams. This was close to the measurements of the water added to the graduated cylinder. The density of the water was 1.0 grams/milliliters.
An optical interferometer utilizes the phenomena of interference of light beams based on the wave nature of light. Two-beam interferometry is the most common tool for evaluating optical surfaces. The basic working principle of two beam interferometer is that two wavefronts of coherent light, one is called test object wavefront and other is called reference wavefront, recombine after travelling different paths and give an interference fringe pattern. The geometrical properties of the interference fringe pattern are determined by the difference in optical path traveled by the recombined wave fronts. The interferometers measure the difference in optical paths in units of wave length λ of the light used. Since the optical path is the product of the geometrical path and the refractive index of the medium, an interferometer measures either the difference in geometrical path when beams traverse the same medium or the difference of the refractive index when the geometrical paths are equal.
