However, wooden toys have always maintained a more prestigious status due to social traditions that were rooted in playing with objects found in nature (Korsvold, 2010). Many authors such as Korsvold (2010) have tried to distinguish the various differences and possible benefits of having wooden toys, which are considered to be more pedagogical toys than toys made out of other materials. In addition, wooden toys whether they be entirely made of wood or have wooden components are labeled as more aesthetically friendly. Not only do parents buy these toys for their reputable educational value or their durability but their display value also plays an important role in the decision-making (Korsvold, 2010). Gender roles in toys are overwhelmingly obvious. The breakdown has not changed in so many years that we all comply with and follow without question. Taking a trip to the local Toys R Us store showed me just how obvious the line was drawn for the sexes, showing a specific division of the two. The stores layout clearly establishes the line between girl’s toys and boys toys. There are very few isles that will intermingle within the sexes. For this project I selected the following age groups; infant, preschool and school age with a focus on girls toys.

This typically happens if they are marketing toys that deal with enhancing child development. These companies don 't care about the side effects their product may have, as long as the parents are convinced, go out and buy it, them companies are good. When it comes to infant toys it is tricky to tell if a baby is going to like it or not. Every infant is different when it comes to learning. There is one particular company called SmartNoggin that claims to help parents and caregivers encourage early milestones in their infant’s development beginning at birth while using their product "NogginStik".
The socialization of children is greatly affected by the toys they are exposed to while growing up. Looking through magazines and walking down the aisles of toy stores it is clear that toy companies are supportive of cultural gender roles biases. Toys designed for girls are commonly found in pink boxes; typically these toys involve housework or taking care of children, for example, dolls and easy bake ovens. On the other hand, “boy” toys are found in blue and black boxes, and a lot of them involve construction and cars.
Children can greatly benefit from having chances to create connections to the real world in their play space, waiting for the fruit on the fruit trees to ripen or continuously checking to see if their seeds have sprouted all provide both connections to the real world ,as well as expanding developmental skills and knowledge. The stereotypes stated above created by society and parents are most often useless in truly predicting a child’s choice of play and toys. Kids are going to gravitate toward what they enjoy. Even the author Deborah Blum states “I don’t think in pastels, myself. I think jungle-green, blood-red. (Blum, 236)” Stereotypes give us something to group people by, but we cannot always judge a person by them.
As a child, our toys were not exactly as gender neutral as earlier times, but also were not as gender stereotypic as the toys in today’s time. The fact that everyone eventually comes into contact with buying toys whether you have kids or you have a friend or family member who have kids which makes this an important topic. Eventually, everyone has to buy a child a present. Would it bother you that all toys are either pink or blue and there is no in between? Or does sticking to what your child is already familiar with and knows the more ideal option when it comes to gender stereotyping with children’s toys? Authors James Delingpole and Eleanor Muffitt both do a good job at arguing both sides to this issue. Although both authors provide valid points throughout each article, about gender stereotyping with toys, James Delingpole clearly was more effective in persuading the audience because he used all three elements; ethos, logos, and pathos to support his idea.

When I started on this paper I figured all the information I would find out is knowledge I would already know of on this subject, but then I actually found out more new information than I already knew. One day in late November Hayden and I were joking around with Evan and he said a very interesting thing that I will never have guessed he would ever say again. He said, “I just got out of the hospital” we asked why and he said, “Because of my depression.” I never knew even had struggled with depression until he told us he did. So I had to find out if the over use of video games led to his depression. The first question I asked him was when did you first start playing video games, and he answered, “I started playing video games when I was in kindergarten it was on my Nintendo 64 playing Frogger. I asked him besides sleeping and at school at what percentage do you play video games he replied, “65%.” I also went on to ask him if he knew that playing to many video games leads to aggression and depression and if he thought this is why he has been diagnosed with depression. He answered yes to both of these questions. Because of this story it made me think, does certain toys create problems in a child’s future development?
The days of blue is for boys and pink is for girls are coming to a victorious end. Now more than ever, child products are marketed specifically towards just girls or just boys, and not for children in general. This outright gender specific marketing can have poor effects on the children consumers, who feel pressured to play with the toys made specifically for their gender.
