Have you ever been saved by an EMS (Emergency Medical Service) worker? Well if you have then they might have saved your life! How much do you think they make each year? Only $31,980, for someone who saved your life. What about a Firefighter who devotes their time and sometimes lives to save people for a variety of things like getting someone out of a car in a car accident or just getting someone out of a burning building. Well it turns out that the Average Salary for a fireman is only $44,373! But wait. What about the threats? They can make an astonishing $25 million dollars a year (MBA). In baseball the top paid player right now is Alex Rodriguez who is making $29,000,000! Together Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony make almost $71,000,000 A …show more content…
YEAR! These athletes get paid WAY TOO MUCH! Athletes do provide entertainment to us but do they save lives like EMS or Firefighters?
One game for Alex Rodriguez he can make about $281,000! That is more than an average family will get in about 6 years! Think about soldiers who get a bare minimum of only about $1,500 a month or $18,000 a year. The people who most definitely risk their lives to keep us safe are only getting the salary per year than A Rod will get in 5 minutes! The minimum salary for a MLB player is an astonishing $507,700! Again that is a bit too much! There are athletes that do deserve to get at least a 5 to 7 million dollar contract but not a 29 million dollar one! All of these baseball or basketball player’s salaries aren’t including bonuses these players get such as $5,000 because you hit a grand slam and a home run today! Some salaries of low-paid jobs don’t even equal what a baseball player’s daily bonus is, and that is a huge problem. Did you know that in September of this year the unemployment rate was 5%! That means that if 500 people were working in a factory, 25 workers would lose their jobs. If people started to pay that's less money we wouldn’t have to be laying off so many people per day! Athletes get a huge and unreasonable
salary! The NFL spends about 3.6 billion on paying athletes per year! If the NFL took of 3 million dollars to salaries that are over 17 million, they would save $338,000,000* per year. And that money can be used to get jobs back or pay higher salaries to people with low-paid jobs! Athletes get way too much, and with reading this I hope I changed your mind about this! * This was calculating that 26 player each received 17 million dollars a year. This meaning the NFL savings would be a larger number seeing some salaries can be up to 24 million dollars!
When looking into the history of our culture, there are many subtopics that fall under the word, “history.” Topics such as arts and literature, food, and media fall into place. Among these topics reside sports. Since the beginning of time, sports have persisted as an activity intertwined with the daily life of people. Whether it is a pick-up game of football in the backyard, or catching an evening game at the local stadium, sports have become the national pastime. According to Marcus Jansen of the Sign Post, more specifically, baseball is America’s national pastime, competing with other sports (Jansen 1). Providing the entertainment that Americans pay top dollar for, live the role models, superstars, and celebrities that put on a jersey as their job. As said in an article by Lucas Reilly, Americans spend close to $25.4 billion dollars on professional sports (Reilly 4). The people that many children want to be when they grow up are not the firefighters or astronauts told about in bed time stories. These dream jobs or fantasies have become swinging a bat or tossing a football in front of millions of screaming fans. When asked why so many dream of having such job, the majority will respond with a salary related answer. In today’s day and age, the average athlete is paid more than our own president. The cold hard facts show that in professional sports, the circulation of money is endless. Certain teams in professional baseball and football are worth over millions of dollars. Consequently, the teams who are worth more are able to spend more. The issue that arises with this philosophy is virtually how much more? League managers, team owners and other sports officials have sought out a solution to the surfacing problem. Is it fair to let...
Ever watched ESPN and seen a report about a baseball player signing a five year contract worth 150 million dollars? Now, with a little math, one would come to realize that that contract means that baseball player will make a bit less than 30 million dollars in that five year period. That is ridiculous. Why do professional baseball players as well as professional athletes in general make so much money just to play a game that little kids play to stay out of trouble? It is because people pay them to play, athletes unions that, for a large part, are used to force team owners to pay them such a high salary, and businesses pay them to advertise their products.
Americans believe that athletes, celebrities, and CEOs are the highest paid jobs in America. This belief is true however the average income of these three jobs is nowhere near what the perception is. Athletes are the most confusing when it comes to pay since people do not factor in that an average professional is only 4.85 years, NFL is 3.5 years, MLB is 5.6 years, NBA is 4.8, and NHL is 5.5 years, (RSVLTS, 2013) United States Bureau of Labor Statistics stated that an average income for “athletes and sport competitors” was only $47,710 (BLS, 2017). People believe that athletes are only the stars you see on television, but this is not the case. Athletes are risking their health for that paycheck. They spend a majority of their lives in the gym or on
The players aren’t in the same league and don’t exhibit the same skill or compassion for their sport. Every sport has players that are paid higher than others based on their performance yet you don’t see an entire group protesting against it occurring. In addition, it has been noted that the MLB has stood firm on the pay that is given to its players and don’t plan on renegotiating any terms of them. The players may take in huge salaries but the franchise owners, stadiums and all associated with the game are seeing very satiable profits also. I feel that any craft, whether it be football, baseball, basketball or hockey should be paid according to their skill level and performance. These athletes put their all into these sports and achieve greatness in doing so. So yes, baseball players deserve their pay as well because they’re bringing just as much if not more and it behooves me why anyone would suggest recalculating a player’s salary if they are meeting expectations and proving fruitful to their
The one thing every single minor league baseball player has in common is their salary. Everyone is out there doing everything they can to make their dreams come a reality, but it is tougher when they compensated poorly. Minor league baseball players receive only 20 dollars a day for meal money. Why do grown men, professional baseball players get paid so little? Major League Baseball is a business like any other, but players in the minor leagues are technically not exempt employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act. An exempt employee is someone who will be reimbursed minimum wage for their duties. Young and upcoming players should be payed for who they are as a player and person, not the cheapest salary possible. Minor league baseball players
Do athletes get overpaid? Is it fair that the average NFL player gets paid 1.9 million dollars a year while the average heart surgeon gets paid 533 thousand dollars annually? I think that professional athletes don’t get paid too much. There are multiple reasons that proves that their pay is not excessive. Their careers are short, they risk their body for our entertainment, and they motivate children.
Now Mr. Roberto Hinojosa contends that professional athletes are overpaid. Citing U.S. Household Income stats for 2012 he explains that teachers,
“The minimum wage in major league baseball is almost four hundred thousand, more than half the players make one million or more. New York Yankees' third baseman Alex Rodriguez takes in twenty five million — some five hundred times what a teacher or a cop or a paramedic makes.” (Caitlin Johnson). As you can see, MLB players are paid a large amount of money regardless of their skill level, and the higher the quality of the player, the more he is paid.
The controversy of athletes being overpaid dates back to 1922, when well-known baseball player George “Babe” Ruth received $50,000 within the first year of his career. Ruth’s extensive wealth was bolstered by dozens of endorsements (Saperecom). As it is shown in figure 1, in the Fortunate 50 Tiger Woods takes the number one spot for highest paid athlete. Tiger’s salary for 2011 is $2,294,116 and like Babe Ruth, his endorsements exceed his salary earning $60,000,000 making his total $62,294,116 (Freedman). It’s crazy to think that 89 years ago professional athletes scarcely made more than the average person today. This is of course not counting the inflation that has occurred since the years which Babe Ruth played baseball.
Although I can understand why people think getting paid £676,000 a year as an average for a Premier league footballer is too much. Where theirs doctors who save people lives but they 're in tons of debt to the bank because they took a loan for medical school. I can also see why people might think firefighters, ambulance crews and police all put their own lives at risks just to save other people whereas footballers get paid millions a year just to kick a ball
When addressing the value of entertainment, there is without a doubt, that we as a society value entertainment highly. But there is no reason that these athletes, who are here to merely entertain us, get paid higher wages than those that save our lives and teach us such as medical doctors and teachers. I find it ridiculous that players make millions of dollars a year, and yet demand more. The entertainment that these athletes provide is solely entertainment; it is not essential to the function or productivity of society. If I were to become a professional football player I would not complain about my salary for many reasons. I am playing the sport that I love and getting paid for it. The minimum wage for football is well over $100,000 a year, as is for many professional sports. These reasons by their lonesome are enough to warrant that the salary professional athletes are paid is suffice.
Many players have risen to stardom by becoming a professional athlete. Athletes have come from many different backgrounds; some from wealthy and some from poverty raised backgrounds. Salaries are continuing to rise, and money doesn’t seem to be an issue. Athletes are getting what they want from the owners by negotiating through their agents. Athletes’ salaries aren’t from their owners, but they come from other sources (“Athletes’ Salary”). Athletes get paid an extremely high salary for the work they do, and should consider the value of their work. They do not deserve the extreme amount they get paid and something should by done about it.
I chose this career over others because it is endowed in multiple ways with responsibility, liability, respect, and honor. Not only does this job impact the community, but it is also a basic necessity in the safeguards that make beneficial contributions all around the world. Firefighters are unique in that they represent courage by risking their lives to save someone else’s. I would be honored to be seen as such a prominent figure in society and know that my actions will inspire the younger generation to act selflessly as I have been moved. Fire fighters save lives and make a lot of money, who could dream of a better job?
Sport has always entertained and influenced our lives. It creates dreams for children and goals for adults. However, many fans are oblivious to the millions they pocket each year. It is without doubt that our sports stars are grossly overpaid. Their annual earnings exceed those we make in a lifetime, even when compared to highly qualified professionals.
It may be true; such people like the president of the United States and doctors don’t make a fraction of what a celebrity makes on one movie. Many can argue that people with the occupations such as a doctor who saves people lives on a daily basis, should be paid more. In like manner the president of the United States only makes 400,000 dollars a year. As compared to an actor that works on a movie for six months at a time, gets paid millions of dollars. Another argument that I have come across, is that some people say that teachers have to work eight hours a day, 5 days a week and ten months out of the year. Teachers are important because they reach out to kids, getting them ready for life. On the other hand, society sees a football player only is around for entertaining purposes. People see it as a teacher is only making 40,000 a year, while a football player makes over forty million.
