Nowadays, we've seen many universities’ competitions on the television as a leisure performance but we've never concerned whether they receive their pay. In Mike Benedykciuk's article "The Blue Line: College Athletes Should be Paid," he argues that student athletes should receive the wage though they are not professional. Like any good writer, he employs special word choices, statistics and rhetorical devices to plead with the audience to take his side. In this article, he demonstrates many such devices, which will be explained further as follows.
Many people can easily picture this scene in their minds: the roaring crowds, the smell of easy- to-eat foods, and the thousands of people all dressed in the same colors. That’s a description of game day at a major college. College sports bring in a lot of money, yet their players don’t receive any money. Many people view this as something that needs to be changed while others believe that only professionals should be compensated. In the essays “Let Stars Get Paid” and “College Athletes Should Not Be Paid”, both authors give their opinions on whether or not college athletes should be paid. College athletes should not be paid because they already receive many benefits from being athletes.
There has been a debate recently about College Athletes and if they should be paid. If it was up to me, they should be paid. There are many reasons that I think this. There are also reasons that they shouldn't be paid, but I won't be talking about those a lot. But, there are many benefits to College Athletes being paid.
Are pro-athletes overpaid? One could argue both sides. For example the two articles “Pro Athletes’ Salaries aren’t Overly Exorbitant” by: Singletary, and “Do Professional Athletes Get Paid Too Much” by: Justin H Jelm. They both use evidence to support their claim very well.

In America, there are over 460,000 NCAA student-athletes every year who compete in 24 sports. Some of these positions come with scholarships. But because of the NCAA and their strict rules, payments aren’t allowed for these athletes. Though there are people who agree with the given scholarships and the rules that the NCAA has in place, there are still those who don’t believe that scholarships are enough and that these players deserve more. This raises up the question for debate: should college athletes be paid?
The controversy of athletes being overpaid dates back to 1922, when well-known baseball player George “Babe” Ruth received $50,000 within the first year of his career. Ruth’s extensive wealth was bolstered by dozens of endorsements (Saperecom). As it is shown in figure 1, in the Fortunate 50 Tiger Woods takes the number one spot for highest paid athlete. Tiger’s salary for 2011 is $2,294,116 and like Babe Ruth, his endorsements exceed his salary earning $60,000,000 making his total $62,294,116 (Freedman). It’s crazy to think that 89 years ago professional athletes scarcely made more than the average person today. This is of course not counting the inflation that has occurred since the years which Babe Ruth played baseball.
Do athletes get overpaid? Is it fair that the average NFL player gets paid 1.9 million dollars a year while the average heart surgeon gets paid 533 thousand dollars annually? I think that professional athletes don’t get paid too much. There are multiple reasons that proves that their pay is not excessive. Their careers are short, they risk their body for our entertainment, and they motivate children.
One point of view is that the athletes earn all that they make, while another is that they are well overpaid. Athletes are valuable enough for their pay with their skill and training. There are many reasons why athletes are paid what they deserve. One reason athletes deserve their pay is that they do it for the regular civilians. The civilians are the people who really want to see the athletes’ talent and sport, so the athletes try to make the civilians happy.
Student athletes of colleges across America practice every day to be able to perform for large crowds year round. These athletes train in the weight and study in the film rooms for hours to perfect their craft in hopes to play well enough to make it to the professional leagues. These athletes, however, are not compensated for their efforts, and this has raised a big question about whether or not these students should receive some monetary stipended for their efforts. This subject divides many people because the answer is not black and white because there are many factors to be considered. A lot of people view these athletes as amateurs and being an amateur comes with them not being paid.
Athletes everyday risk the fact that they can get injured before they graduate and have a chance of making money. “Athletes are putting their bodies on the line, they are doing so voluntarily. No one is forcing them to participate”(Welch and Marshall). The chance of an athlete getting injured in college is different for each sport, but the chance is too great to risk. This shows that college athletes deserve to be paid because they can get injured in college and throw everything away before even making a single dollar.

Many players have risen to stardom by becoming a professional athlete. Athletes have come from many different backgrounds; some from wealthy and some from poverty raised backgrounds. Salaries are continuing to rise, and money doesn’t seem to be an issue. Athletes are getting what they want from the owners by negotiating through their agents. Athletes’ salaries aren’t from their owners, but they come from other sources (“Athletes’ Salary”). Athletes get paid an extremely high salary for the work they do, and should consider the value of their work. They do not deserve the extreme amount they get paid and something should by done about it.
In today’s society many will argue whether or not professional athletes are overpaid. In the present time athletes are being paid phenomenally large amounts of money for their entertainment. It is my claim that all professional athletes are overpaid because they do not offer society an essential function that improves or enhances our world in comparison to other professionals such as medical doctors, lawyers, and teachers. Society does not value entertainment enough to warrant such high salaries such as those of many professional athletes. There is no reason that these athletes should demand these tremendous amounts of money. This is why you have to put into question their reasoning for demanding such high salaries.
