“Jordan fakes to the outside, leads his man into the pick, takes the lane and jams! Slam dunk by Michael Jordan!” said the commentator. “That is $400 to the Michael Jordan Foundation, folks. But it looks like Jordan is down with an injury… We now have word that the great Michael Jordan will end the season with a torn MCL…” Whether or not professional athletes are valuable enough for their salaries is heavily debatable. One point of view is that the athletes earn all that they make, while another is that they are well overpaid. Athletes are valuable enough for their pay with their skill and training. There are many reasons why athletes are paid what they deserve. One reason athletes deserve their pay is that they do it for the regular civilians. The civilians are the people who really want to see the athletes’ talent and sport, so the athletes try to make the civilians happy. In relationship to this, author Mackenzie Carro writes in “Are Athletes Overpaid?” , “We’re the ones who pack the stadiums in rain and snow to watch their games, who crowd around the television to cheer them on, who feel immeasurable joy when our team wins.” This shows that athletes really do not do their sport for themselves, but for all of the …show more content…

A very common part of an athlete’s post-career life includes lots of health issues. One example, as written by author Johnny Milano in “I feel like a 90 year old man” is stated as, “Wesley Walker says that he is in constant pain, can’t sleep without medication and has suffered so much nerve damage and muscle loss that he needs help removing a cap from a bottle of water.” From this, one can see that the injuries athletes go through are very heavy ones that may use up the average person’s salary.
