In the article,”Opinion: Who's to blame for athletes' salaries? We are”, the author proves that the reason why the wages of athletes are skyrocket high is that us, the viewers make it that way. The author proves this by stating that fans buy team merchandise, which increases athlete's wages. The author also believes that many people have pieces of team merchandise which they love to wear, and furthermore, some teams even create products that fit babies, including bibs and pacifiers, like the Washington Redskins. Another point is that since millions of fans watch the professional athletes play every game, the money that the athletes make comes from the money that the media pays. What this means is that the media companies first buy the permission
When looking into the history of our culture, there are many subtopics that fall under the word, “history.” Topics such as arts and literature, food, and media fall into place. Among these topics reside sports. Since the beginning of time, sports have persisted as an activity intertwined with the daily life of people. Whether it is a pick-up game of football in the backyard, or catching an evening game at the local stadium, sports have become the national pastime. According to Marcus Jansen of the Sign Post, more specifically, baseball is America’s national pastime, competing with other sports (Jansen 1). Providing the entertainment that Americans pay top dollar for, live the role models, superstars, and celebrities that put on a jersey as their job. As said in an article by Lucas Reilly, Americans spend close to $25.4 billion dollars on professional sports (Reilly 4). The people that many children want to be when they grow up are not the firefighters or astronauts told about in bed time stories. These dream jobs or fantasies have become swinging a bat or tossing a football in front of millions of screaming fans. When asked why so many dream of having such job, the majority will respond with a salary related answer. In today’s day and age, the average athlete is paid more than our own president. The cold hard facts show that in professional sports, the circulation of money is endless. Certain teams in professional baseball and football are worth over millions of dollars. Consequently, the teams who are worth more are able to spend more. The issue that arises with this philosophy is virtually how much more? League managers, team owners and other sports officials have sought out a solution to the surfacing problem. Is it fair to let...
“Fans pay to watch athletes compete at the highest level. To be sure, it is the fans that primarily pay the athletes’ salaries” (Walter). Yes, a large portion of an athlete’s pay comes from the people that come to watch them. Athletes get a portion of all revenue their team or staff receives. This means that everybody gets a cut of that prize money, everybody gets a cut of ...
Nowadays, we've seen many universities’ competitions on the television as a leisure performance but we've never concerned whether they receive their pay. In Mike Benedykciuk's article "The Blue Line: College Athletes Should be Paid," he argues that student athletes should receive the wage though they are not professional. Like any good writer, he employs special word choices, statistics and rhetorical devices to plead with the audience to take his side. In this article, he demonstrates many such devices, which will be explained further as follows.
In 1905, the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) was founded by President Roosevelt to help establish rules that would help cut down on the rising amount of sports injuries and deaths that were occurring. Ever since the beginning of the NCAA, it has been classified as a non-profit organization and all the money the company makes goes back into paying the employees and improving the organization. This includes the equipment the players use, researching for better safety, employing new people to help expand the organization to new sports, etc (Investing). People are starting to think that the NCAA should re-evaluate how they are spending their money and that they should begin to
Many people can easily picture this scene in their minds: the roaring crowds, the smell of easy- to-eat foods, and the thousands of people all dressed in the same colors. That’s a description of game day at a major college. College sports bring in a lot of money, yet their players don’t receive any money. Many people view this as something that needs to be changed while others believe that only professionals should be compensated. In the essays “Let Stars Get Paid” and “College Athletes Should Not Be Paid”, both authors give their opinions on whether or not college athletes should be paid. College athletes should not be paid because they already receive many benefits from being athletes.
Ms. Jennifer Fontaine does not support the idea that athletes are overpaid. Ms. Fontaine suggests that athletes who are superior in their skills and talents associated with their respective sport should be duly compensated. Ms. Fontaine also states that the money earned by these athletes is justified because professional athletes work harder than people in almost any other profession. Last, it is her premise that the money earned by these highly talented athletes help to cover the high costs of medical treatment for serious, if not life-long, injuries such as knee, back/spinal, and head injuries.
College Athletes Should Not Be Paid College athletes should not be paid from an economic standpoint. The college they attend to will provide much more for the athletes than giving them pay would, not only would it be extravagant but it would take away money from other sports that the college offers. In scholarships for student athletes, the college provides financial compensation in almost all aspects of college life, which will take away much of the student debts that accumulate, paying to further their education. Joe Posnanski, a sports journalist, argued that college athletes should not be paid. He discusses how college athletes really are paid in the form of free tuition, free board, free doctors, free places to train, free food, and top of the line coaching.
The controversy of athletes being overpaid dates back to 1922, when well-known baseball player George “Babe” Ruth received $50,000 within the first year of his career. Ruth’s extensive wealth was bolstered by dozens of endorsements (Saperecom). As it is shown in figure 1, in the Fortunate 50 Tiger Woods takes the number one spot for highest paid athlete. Tiger’s salary for 2011 is $2,294,116 and like Babe Ruth, his endorsements exceed his salary earning $60,000,000 making his total $62,294,116 (Freedman). It’s crazy to think that 89 years ago professional athletes scarcely made more than the average person today. This is of course not counting the inflation that has occurred since the years which Babe Ruth played baseball.
"Over the last decade, the debate of whether or not college athletes should be paid has intensified, and many athletes, as well as coaches, have begun to advocate for the cause." (Thelin) Tyler Harnett, a writer at the Huffington Post, took his standpoint on the topic in the article "Why College Athletes Should be Paid," which clearly states his claim, college athletes should receive pay. I disagree with Harnett's viewpoint and I don't believe college athletes should be paid because they are already receiving a scholarship, plus some schools lack the amount of funding, and overall unfairness between students and other colleges.
The salary of professional athletes are always being debated on whether they make too much or it 's the right amount they should make. Some of the athletes do make millions and millions of dollars, but there is some that don 't. Anyways in order to make the millions first an athletes must make it to the professional level. For example in soccer only 1.4% of people actually make it to the professional level. So the rest of the people make it for other sports such as football, basketball, baseball, and others. To be considered a professional athlete you must be getting payed to play a sport. They will be playing for a league and even tournaments and get rewarded with more money if they win. Some may think an athlete
Since college sports generate more than $11 billion dollars in revenue from broadcast rights, ticket sales, and sponsorship rights; many people believe that student-athletes should be paid the amount of money being made. The money that is being generated by revenue is later passed on to NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) executives, coaches, and athletic directors in forms of salaries. On average, NCAA head football coaches receive $2.1 million in salaries and are considered the highest paid employee in 40 states along with NCAA basketball coaches. However, coaches at Division 1 schools such as Jim Harbaugh, Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, and many more average salaries that are above $7 million a year, 7 times the amount a division 2 or 3 coach makes a year.
Sports are one of the most profitable industries in the world. Everyone wants to get their hands on a piece of the action. Those individuals and industries that spend hundreds of millions of dollars on these sports teams are hoping to make a profit, but it may be an indirect profit. It could be a profit for the sports club, or it could be a promotion for another organization (i.e. Rupert Murdoch, FOX). The economics involved with sports have drastically changed over the last ten years.
...er athlete can have expenses up $80 000 a year for just their training, coaching, and entrance fees for competitions. This may not even include the cost of daily living and travel expenses. There are sponsors, who will cover many costs for an athlete. But those sponsorships will not cover steroids and other drugs, altitude training, prosthetics, or surgeries. They support the athlete’s necessities to participate in the sport they love. This may seem all right to athletes with money in their family. Think of a situation where there could be a person with no money but is an incredible athlete, and is competing against a good athlete but had the expensive altitude training, surgeries to improve body parts, and steroids their opponent didn’t have and won. This is not morally right. It is no longer a fair fight and can ruin the entire spirit of fair play in sport.
In today’s society many will argue whether or not professional athletes are overpaid. In the present time athletes are being paid phenomenally large amounts of money for their entertainment. It is my claim that all professional athletes are overpaid because they do not offer society an essential function that improves or enhances our world in comparison to other professionals such as medical doctors, lawyers, and teachers. Society does not value entertainment enough to warrant such high salaries such as those of many professional athletes. There is no reason that these athletes should demand these tremendous amounts of money. This is why you have to put into question their reasoning for demanding such high salaries.
Many players have risen to stardom by becoming a professional athlete. Athletes have come from many different backgrounds; some from wealthy and some from poverty raised backgrounds. Salaries are continuing to rise, and money doesn’t seem to be an issue. Athletes are getting what they want from the owners by negotiating through their agents. Athletes’ salaries aren’t from their owners, but they come from other sources (“Athletes’ Salary”). Athletes get paid an extremely high salary for the work they do, and should consider the value of their work. They do not deserve the extreme amount they get paid and something should by done about it.
