Shock is a feeling of fascination and excitement mixed with anxiety, tension, suspense and surprise developed from an unpredictable, mysterious, and engaging source of entertainment (Merriam-Webster). Shock can occur whenever there is a perceived suspended drama, with tension, suspense or surprise being the primary emotions felt by the audience as part of the situation (Dirks). However, the term is most often used in regards to an audience’s perception in dramatic works such as film.
One often experiences a sense of shock in film due to the filmmaker’s ability to manipulate technical elements such as sound and camera angles in order to elicit feelings of suspense and tension from the audience. More specifically, the definition of suspense suggests that this shocked emotion arises when someone is aware of his or her lack of knowledge about the development of a meaningful event; thus, suspense is a combination of anticipation and uncertainty dealing with the ambiguity of future events (Merriam-Webster). In terms of storyline expectations, it may be contrasted with the unknown, curiosity or surprise.
Two films, in which shock is used to entice, thrill and surprise audiences are Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960’s thriller Psycho, and Steven Spielberg’s 1975 blockbuster hit Jaws. In both films audiences experience suspense and shock when they expect something bad to happen and have (or believe they have) a superior perspective on events in the films’ hierarchy of knowledge, yet they are powerless to intervene to prevent it from happening. The films differ however in regards to the type of shock and suspense used. For instance, Psycho relies much more heavily on the use of psychological shock where as Jaws uses the absence of a villain to crea...

In order for a moment in film to be shocking, the tension does not have to be in the form of the bad guy stalking the protagonist. It can be much more straightforward, much less dramatic, but still have the ability to make the viewer keep watching. Shock is about surprise, tension and suspense, about the obstacles between the protagonist and his or her goal. The suspense of a story may be the point at which the viewer feels more eager to know the end, and what will happen next. It is often referred to climax of a film; when the events of the film leave the audience with feelings of shock and awe (Dirks). The shock is the most important element in a film as it allows both audiences and filmmakers to evolve and progress creatively.
2. According to Sobchack, contemporary screen violence greatly differs than portrayals of violence in years past. Today, violent scenes are careless and lack significance because we as audiences have become calloused and desensitized to any acts of violence. She states that there is “no grace or benediction attached to violence. Indeed, its very intensity seems diminished” (Sobchack 432). Senseless violence, gruesome acts, and profound amounts of gore are prevalent in movies today, and because even this is not enough, it must be accompanied by loud blasts and noise, constantly moving scenes to keep audiences stimulated and large quantities of violence for viewers to enjoy what they are watching. Decades ago, it was the story that was engaging to audiences and filmmaking was an art.
First, a key method used to create suspense is the usage of the setting. When a character is in an unwelcoming or uninviting location, uneasy or tense feelings can be formed. When there is a sense of not knowing what is around the corner or lurking in the shadows, suspense is created. Also, ominous weather, such as threatening thunderstorms, can lead the reader to anticipate an unfortunate event occurring. An example of an uncomfortable setting is the secret passageway, which is dark, dirty, and most often only occupied by a single individual. Under these conditions many people become anxious, and because of these uneasy feelings that one may encounter, when a character is subjected to these conditions, the reader may become apprehensive, which leads to the formation of suspense. When Dan Needham shuts John Wheelwright in the secret passageway while both are in a drunken stupor, a high level of suspense is created. The description of the secret passageway adds to the suspense of the scene, "The passageway was dark; yet I could discern the scurrying of spiders.
Everyone at one point has been captivated and intrigued by the plot of a movie or a book. This captivation is generated by the one tool that authors and directors love the most, suspense. Authors want their audience and readers of their writing to be enthralled by creating tension and thrill in their plot. The usage of style, characterization, point of view, and foreshadowing allows authors and directors to create suspense in their work. Suspense is a very difficult approach to master but with the correct tools it can be as simple as a walk through the park.
Analysis of the Ways the Director Builds Suspense in the Opening to the Film Jaws
Suspense is the build up of anxiety or excitement in a story. It is an incredibly useful literary element. People like to read suspenseful stories, and/or watch suspenseful shows and movies because suspense gets their hearts racing. Suspense in movies and books might keep the audience intrigued and make them wonder what will happen next. People also like suspense because they might like trying to figure out what will happen on their own. This will keep the audience intrigued because they want to know how close they were to the exact answer. There are many stories that display suspense and many different authors who wrote them. One book that used suspense was Cujo, by Stephen King. Cujo was a dog that was bitten by a bat. He then turns into
I have discussed how Francis F. Coppola exploits a wide array of audio and editing techniques to create suspense, tense, and anxiety in the sequence to affect the audience’s feelings. Despite the simple fabula, this multifaceted film requires certain intellectual involvement and efforts of the audience to grasp fully its underlying meanings and subtle nuances.
The scene was made as exciting as possible so as to cover the sad and
A blood-curdling horror movie has to tell a story while incorporating specific aspects that make it into the terrifying film that attracts an audience to the theaters. Using darkness, suspense, jump scares, and horrific background music, directors are able to create a movie that scares everyone. In the soon to be released film Leatherface, all of these aspects are addressed and play an important role in how scary it will be. The trailer for the upcoming thriller/horror movie, Leatherface is successful in capturing the audience’s attention by the way it uses color, camera angles, and sound effects to create a suspenseful feeling while raising intriguing questions that will persuade people to watch the film.
Suspense is a 1913 film that portrays the story of a tramp intruding into a family’s home, where a mother takes care of her child while her husband is away. The plot is a common one that had been used previous times before the film’s release, such as in The Lonely Villa (1909). However, through taking advantage of the single frame shot, the filmmakers were able to create a masterful aesthetic of two separate stories that turn a basic plot into a complex story. The film created an inventive way of illustrating stories within cinema by allowing the audience the chance to consume more narrative in less time within just one take.
“Art is emotion. The use of film, I say, putting it together, and making it have an affect on an audience is the main function of film,’ said Alfred Hitchcock, in the CBC interview. (Hitchcock, A Talk with Hitchcock.) The movies have been a big part of culture since it was invented. Though, every film is not good, all may be somewhat impactful. Alfred Hitchcock, a man that has directed many big movies, couldn’t have known the impact of one of the most shocking and controversial movie ever. Hitchcock’s Psycho effected the way the current entertainment industry shows mental health, sexuality, suspense, and awareness in culture. With amazing violence and suggestive sexual content, the movie crossed some censorship lines. Arguably Hitchcock’s largest hit, still lives in current media today.
As an audience we are manipulated from the moment a film begins. In this essay I wish to explore how The Conversation’s use of sound design has directly controlled our perceptions and emotional responses as well as how it can change the meaning of the image. I would also like to discover how the soundtrack guides the audience’s attention with the use of diegetic and nondiegetic sounds.

Modern day horror films are very different from the first horror films which date back to the late nineteenth century, but the goal of shocking the audience is still the same. Over the course of its existence, the horror industry has had to innovate new ways to keep its viewers on the edge of their seats. Horror films are frightening films created solely to ignite anxiety and panic within the viewers. Dread and alarm summon deep fears by captivating the audience with a shocking, terrifying, and unpredictable finale that leaves the viewer stunned. (Horror Films)
First of all, keeping the suspense is as essential to the horror genre as the air for breathing. One good example of suspenseful story is The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe. In this short tale, these two are latent from the beginning. While the two men go down to the vaults, we get hints that prepare us for its tragic denouement. Early in the story, the reason why Montresor- the main character- seeks revenge against Fortunato is revealed. You can also perceive suspense when the author introduces phrases like “I vowed revenge” and “at length I would be avenged”. Nevertheless, what the reader actually perceives is the perverseness of a man unable to forget a hostile action from someone he called “friend”; that is why- in his lips- this word has ironical connotation. Also, Montresor is not as good as he claims, instead he rejoices in his revenge. Early in the narration, he emphasizes how he smiles at his victim’s lack of awareness of his real plan. When referring to his vengeance, he says: “my smile was now at the thought of his immolation”; the author highlights now because the character confesses he’s been kind to his victim but he did not appreciate his . Yet, the strains that lead to Fortunato’s death conti...
Would you rather be horrified beyond repair or thrilled to the point of no return? In horror, the main purpose is to invoke fear and dread into the audience in the most unrealistic way. Horror movies involve supernatural entities such as ghosts, vampires, teleportation, and being completely immortal. As thriller films are grounded in realism and involve more suspense, mystery, and a sense of panic. Though both genres will frighten the audience, it will happen in two different ways. Whether the horror thrills or the thriller horrifies, a scare is always incorporated.
