Different Ways John Irving Creates Suspense in A Prayer for Owen Meany
In John Irving's novel titled, A Prayer for Owen Meany, suspenseful events are of abundance, and there are multiple ways the author creates this suspense. Among these methods of creating suspense, four that stand out are the use of setting, the pace of the story, the involvement of mysteries to be solved, and the ability of the reader to easily identify and sympathize with the protagonist. By placing a character in a gloomy or solitary place, uncomfortable feelings are created, which append to the suspense. Pace and structure of the story also play into the foundation of suspense, as shorter sentences and stronger, more cutting verbs and adjectives are often used to keep the reader highly interested and reading at a rapid speed. Of course, suspense could not be considered what it is if there were no mystery involved. The element of not knowing what is in store for the future and having the urge to find out is the essence of suspense. Also, if the reader cannot easily relate to and sympathize with the character in the suspenseful situation, a loss of interest can arise, and therefore spoil the spirit of the tension. Uncomfortable settings, pace and structure, use of mysteries, and capability to relate to the main character are four techniques that John Irving uses to create suspense.
First, a key method used to create suspense is the usage of the setting. When a character is in an unwelcoming or uninviting location, uneasy or tense feelings can be formed. When there is a sense of not knowing what is around the corner or lurking in the shadows, suspense is created. Also, ominous weather, such as threatening thunderstorms, can lead the reader to anticipate an unfortunate event occurring. An example of an uncomfortable setting is the secret passageway, which is dark, dirty, and most often only occupied by a single individual. Under these conditions many people become anxious, and because of these uneasy feelings that one may encounter, when a character is subjected to these conditions, the reader may become apprehensive, which leads to the formation of suspense. When Dan Needham shuts John Wheelwright in the secret passageway while both are in a drunken stupor, a high level of suspense is created. The description of the secret passageway adds to the suspense of the scene, "The passageway was dark; yet I could discern the scurrying of spiders.
In literature of significant standing, no act of violence is perpetrated without reason. For a story to be legitimate in the area of fine literature violence cannot be used in a wanton manner. In John Irving’s modern classic, A Prayer for Owen Meany the audience is faced with multiple scenes of strong violence but violence is never used without reason. All of the violent acts depicted in the novel are totally necessary for the characters and the plot to develop. This plot-required violence can be seen in the novel’s first chapter when Owen accidentally kills John’s mother and in the novel’s last chapter when John relates Owen’s grotesque, while heroic, death to the audience. The violence that is shown in this novel is used in such a calculated manner that it leaves a great impression on the audience.
A Prayer for Owen Meany, a novel by John Irving, is a touching and morbid novel riddled with death and uncertainty. It’s overall story, however, about two young boys growing up in the 1950’s, is a story where relationships are tested and also strengthened because of a peculiar child, Owen Meany. Even after the death of Owen Meany himself, the relationship between the two is as strong as ever because after death Owen continues to protect Johnny and let him know he’s not going to leave him. While alive Owen protected Johnny by making it so he could not get drafted into the Vietnam War by cutting off his index finger, effectively making it so the he cannot shoot a gun. Suspense is the feeling of uncertainty or excitement, in waiting for an outcome or decision. Edgar Allan Poe uses suspense in his story “Masque of the Red Death” by using objects and great descriptive detail. Poe’s story is about a prince that tries to escape from the inevitable. He tries to lock himself away from the ‘red death’ and has a masquerade ball that doesn’t end happily. Prince and all of his guests die inside or around the seventh apartment room. The seventh room is preceded by six colored rooms which are meant to symbolize either the stages of life, or the seven sins. Inside the last room there are black velvet tapestries that hang all over the ceiling and down the walls. The window panes are a deep blood red color which gives the room an unwelcoming atmosphere. On the western wall, there is a gigantic clock of a deep black wood. Inside it has a pendulum that swings back and forth with a dull monotonous clang. Mystery is just a precursor to suspense. Suspense is used in several places throughout the story. One, when Rainsford is standing at the door seeing a giant standing there silent, this makes the reader wonder what will happen next. Two, when Zaroff is talking to Rainsford about the most dangerous game. This fools the reader and Rainsford about Zaroffs intentions towards Rainsford, and it makes the reader want to keep reading. Last, Rainsfords dilemmas keep the reader in suspense. The reader wonders how he will get himself out of his predicaments.
Carl Jung was a Swiss psychologist and psychiatrist who developed many theories concerning the unconscious mind. Jung’s theories state that the unconscious part of a human’s psyche has two different layers, the personal unconscious and the collective unconscious. The personal unconscious is unique to every individual; however, the collective unconscious “is inborn.” (Carl Jung, Four Archetypes, 3) The collective unconscious is present in everyone’s psyche, and it contains archetypes which are “those psychic contents which have not yet been submitted to conscious elaboration” (Jung, Archetypes, 5); they are templates of thought that have been inherited through the collective unconscious. Jung has defined many different archetypes such as the archetype of the mother, the archetype of the hero, the archetype of the shadow, etc. These Jungian archetypes are often projected by the collective unconscious onto others. If the novel A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving is examined through a Jungian archetypal lens it is possible to discern different archetypes projected by the protagonist’s unconscious self to illustrate the effects of the collective unconscious on character and plot analysis.
The book A Prayer for Owen Meany brings forth various themes and questions that can't be answered easily. One of these questions is "Can religious faith exist alongside doubt, or are the two mutually exclusive?" There are several different possible takes on this question may be answered. How a person answers this question is related to their belief in faith.
After seeing the Angel besides John’s mother, Owen tells John how everything is fated and already predestined. When John mentions the incident that killed his mother as an “accident,” it made Owen “furious when [he] suggested that anything was an ‘accident’ -especially anything that happened to [Owen]; on the subject of predestination, Owen Meany would accuse Calvin of bad faith. There were no accidents; there was a reason for that baseball” to kill John’s mother just as well there is a reason for everything (Irving 102). After waking up with a fever and going to John’s mother’s room, Owen Meany believes he saw an angel next to John’s mother, while John believes that the angel is benign or some force of good, Owen believes it was the angel of death; Owen assumes that he disrupted the Angel of Death at his work.
Family and Friendship are the two things that define who we are. These two things are what we belong to and they help create our identity. In Beloved and A Prayer for Owen Meany this is evident because our main characters are who they are because of the loved ones surrounding them. We see it with Sethe and the amount of love she has for her family that is so strong that she is willing to kill her own kids. We also see it with John Wheelwright and how the death of his mother at the hands of his best friend Owen has affected him but also changed him for the better because he has Owen by his side who will never let anything bad happen to him. Through the use of suspense, authors can truly draw the reader into the story. Suspense in the case of gives the reader the sense of apprehension about was is going to happen next and anticipation. Two stories where suspense is depicted is Roald Dahl’s short story, “The Landlady” and Edgar Allan Poe’s story, “The Tell Tale Heart”. Roald Dahl’s short story, “The Landlady,” is about a young man, Billy Weaver who wants to find somewhere to stay for a night for cheap, since he is traveling for business. However, when he comes across a cheap bed and breakfast, the Landlady there, ends up acting very strange and Billy only uncovers some of her secrets, before it is too late for him to escape. In Edgar Allan Poe’s story, “The Tell Tale Heart,” is about someone, the narrator, who finds an old man’s eye immensely disturbing. After of seven nights of attempting murderer, on the eighth night, not only does the
Edgar Allen Poe used very detailed descirbling words to create a world of suspense in the readers head. “He was still sitting up in the bed listening; --just as I have done, night after night, hearkening to the death watches in the wall.” (2) He gives us a hint in the death watches in the wall and hearkening means listening, so they are making noises. With the details it’s also a better way to get an image in your head. For me I imaged an old busted up big house with cracks in the walls for death watches to come in and hang out in there. Read this quotation from the book, “I had my head in, and was about to open the lantern, when my thumb slipped upon the tin fastening, and the old man sprang up in bed, crying out --"Who's there?"” (2) I can picture that scene perfectly and you dont know if the old man can see him so that brings more suspense. You can even image his face when his thumb slipped on the tin fastening. (Well, at least I can.) With great detail comes great suspense and Edgar Allen Poe hit the target right in the middle.
Suspense is when someone is anxious and does not know what will happen. For example if a character is hearing a strange sound and they don’t know what is going to happen, that makes the audience have suspense. Suspense is effective when the readers or audience is interested and hooked into the book/movie. For example if the audience is not interested or not hooked into the book/movie then it will not build suspense. The story,Cujo, is what I will be using to show effective suspense techniques. The story is about a mom and a boy who are trapped in a broken down car while being attacked by a rabid dog. Cujo is an excellent example on how to build suspense effectively because it shows dilemma, mood, and mystery.
The main methods used to create suspense in both the stories involve the use of supernatural phenomena’s. The creating of suspense in both the stories start from the beginning, the titles. As the stories progress the use of first person narrative help the authors expand the amounts of suspense created throughout the stories. The settings of both the stories play a significant part in the building up of suspense. Both the authors, Charles Dickens and Conan Doyle, are famous authors who have written many books with great quantities of suspense, they know what they are doing and they have done it well, especially well in these short stories.
The suspense is defined as, “An anxious feeling caused by having to wait to see what happens.” (Scholastic Children’s Dictionary, 541). In other words, suspense is where you are unsettled of what may happen. Scary stories are written to cause a feeling of suspense. “The Monkeys Paw” and “Tell-Tale Heart” both have the same relationship with cause and effect, and both authors use repetition of sound to create suspense.
The suspense is created by the different characters and many mysterious setting. In this story suspense is presented in a way to keep the reader engaged in the story. The main suspense begins with Helen Stoner telling her story to Sherlock Holmes. Helen told Holmes about the mysterious and strange events that occurred. The events such as, whistling in the middle of the night, as well as her sister’s mysterious death. Doyle describing the dark bedroom that Watson spend the night in, made the reader feel the suspense as if they were in the same room. He uses descriptions such as “...This is very interesting. You can see now that it is fastened to a hook just above where the little opening for the ventilator is” as well as “Holmes as we sat together in the gathering darkness” (Conan Doyle) made the reader more engaged into the story. Foreshadowing is also created in the story to give clues that suggest events that will occur later in the story. Foreshadowing is seemed to be seen when the pole rope was connected to a ventilator and the ventilator went to the next room. Cataphora is a trope, which refers to early cues within the narrative, while the opposite trope anaphora means the recall of these clues (cf. Shaul 2012, 39). Cataphora refers to the subsequent information in the text. The subsequent information are cohesive relationships to advance one (Wulff 1996, 2-3).
