Figurative Language: 1) Present a few examples of a poet 's use of figurative language in any of the poems from the "Homelands" album. Look for metaphors, similes, analogies, or personification.

Theme: 2) After reading my introduction and the questions after each poem, write 1-2 paragraphs comparing the treatment of the same theme in TWO poems from the assigned poems in the "Homelands" album . See Week 3 folder for a definition of theme.

Literature is filled with figurative language which makes a piece of writing sound interesting, vibrant and exciting. In the poems “Heaven” by Kathy Songs and “Postcard from Kashmir” by Agha Shahid Ali shares theme of feeling disconnected from the “home”, the authors use similar theme but treats the experience and poem different. In the poem “Heaven” the author shares her feeling of disconnection from her homeland where she never got the visit. She portrays her own version of China with familiar surroundings. Although she never been to china, she wants to go back even after two generations has passed. She sees China like a fantasy land and even calls it heaven. In the sentence “I’ve sat in this spot and wondered why here? Why in this short life, this town, this creek they call a river?” she shows just how much she resents her life here, and how much she looks forward to going back although it seems as she knows that will likely never
