Poetry is often forgotten in our society. Poetry is mistaken for something less than its greater meaning. Four specific poets demonstrate the true meaning of poetry through their words and imagery. These poets use their own language to speak to us in poetry, by describing a major event that has happened in their life. It is truly captivating to hear these poets speak from another aspect that we are not use too. The first poet is Linda McCariston, a talented woman who was challenged when she was a child. McCariston went through tough times, and used poetry to help guide her. McCariston did not have the authority to speak her poetry, because she was discriminated against. As of today, she states, “Poetry allows one to speak with a voice of power …show more content…
You 're trying to understand what you 're living through by using the tools of the word and images and the beautiful inner structure of language.” (287)
This quote emphasizes the relationship of her relationship between her daughter. It was challenging for McPherson to live with her, once you understand the true meaning behind it, that is the key. In the poem “Bad Mother Blues” McPherson tells a negative story about her daughter, showing how hard it was for her. She states “you were arrested, child, and I had to take your pocketknife, when you were booked and I had to confiscate your pocket knife it had blood on it from where you tried to take your

Barks has one of the most contrasting personalities out of all the poets. He states, “Poetry is close to madness”. Barks uses his “madness” to write magnificent poetry. What Barks is saying, is that to be physically mad is a good thing. He believes that the ones who have a great background with be the successful writer. Barks is also a writer who sees everyone in a different way and believes that each individual has their own way of writing. In his dialogue he states, “these leaves, our bodily personalities, seemed identical, but the Globe of soul fruit, we make, each is elaborately unique.”(48). Barks is comparing leaves to our personalities, when he says that he is referring to the fact that it is obvious to see our outside personalities. Another connection is made when he refers the Globe of soul fruit as our pure writing that expresses who we are as a person; which is treated differently for each
Poetry’s role is evaluated according to what extent it mirrors, shapes and is reshaped by historical events. In the mid-19th century, some critics viewed poetry as “an expression of the poet’s personality, a manifestation of the poet’s intuition and of the social and historical context which shaped him” ( Preminger, Warnke, Hardison 511). Analysis of the historical, social, political and cultural events at a certain time helps the reader fully grasp a given work. The historical approach is necessary in order for given allusions to be situated in their social, political and cultural background. In order to escape intentional fallacy, a poet should relate his work to universal
Adversity affects the lives of many individuals. Through facing adversity people tend to show their true selves. In the novel “Speak” by Laurie Halse-Anderson, the main character Melinda, faces a few different types of adversity. One form of adversity that she faces is that she was sexually assaulted. Another type of adversity that Melinda goes through in this novel is that she loses all her friends and starts to lose her family as well. Throughout my life, I have faced many different types of adversity, one major thing that I have dealt with in my life is depression. Those who face adversity in their life can choose if they want to face it or to ignore it, and the outcome will prove what they chose to do.
It is important that we examine their poems so we can know what they experienced. It is helpful to others because they may have experienced the same situation. They may have also wanted to speak.
The poems facilitate the investigation of human experience through illustrating life’s transience and the longevity of memory.
Anne Bradstreet: the first American to have her poems published. Throughout her works, she captured what it was like to be a pioneer in a new land. Thanks to her family’s high stature and disposition in life, Anne Bradstreet was given an education: something that was not very common for women in the 1600's. Her poems enable her to speak freely and express the world through a women's eye. In doing so she laid down the foundation to what it truly means to be American.
In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by the name of Langston Hughes. A well-known writer that still gets credit today for pomes like “ Theme for English B” and “Let American be American Again.”
The speakers and audience in poem are crucial elements of the poem and is also the case in these poems. In the poem Untitled, it can be argued that the poem is being written by Peter based on what his father might say to him...
Billy Collins has used a specific metaphor, simile, rhyme and personification in his poem ‘Introduction to poetry’ in order to show how one should better understand a poem. This poem focused on what the poem actually mean and how a poem should be clearly understood. Throughout the poem, Billy Collins has presented a clear way of understanding the poem by using a very interesting imagery, symbolism, metaphor and a very sensitive sound. The words used in this poem are so powerful that the readers are convinced to think about the issue presented in the poem.
The daughter alludes to an idea that her mother was also judged harshly and made to feel ashamed. By the daughters ability to see through her mothers flaws and recognize that she was as wounded as the child was, there is sense of freedom for both when the daughter find her true self. Line such as “your nightmare of weakness,” and I learned from you to define myself through your denials,” present the idea that the mother was never able to defeat those that held her captive or she denied her chance to break free. The daughter moments of personal epiphany is a victory with the mother because it breaks a chain of self-loathing or hatred. There is pride and love for the women they truly were and is to be celebrated for mother and daughter.

In the same swing it can show you the best decision of your life, followed by a profound realization that it was actually your worst. It drastically influences words, turning “love” from a primal, unwavering desire to a background noise that holds together the fabric of one’s personal reality. “Dreams” alter between hopeful aspirations and lost opportunities. “Home” begins as some sort of containment chamber, but slowly reveals itself as a complex web of nostalgic memories, feelings, and relationships that represent an unmatched level of warmth and comfort. “Self” originates with a false confidence and structure, only for the façade to eventually crumble and shine light upon miles of unharvested land and incomplete blueprints, patiently waiting for their potential to be realized. Of course, these are just my experiences with these words. Countless interpretations can be found, and each of them are constantly evolving. Just goes to show the kind of silly and abstract disaster that words can
Jean Toomer has strong descriptive meanings in his poems. He uses figurative language to encourage his readers to hunt for their own meanings and interpretations. Toomer uses both denotative and connotative meanings, especially in his poem Reapers. His constant elaborate diction can change the tone and theme of his poems with just a few words. Jean Toomer’s writing was all influenced by his experiences, the time period in which he grew up, and his cultural background.
In the Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters the first poem is about Minerva the poetess she was made fun of and treated like an animal. She was kidnapped by Butch Weldy and left for dead. At the end she reveals that all she wants is for her poetry to be remembered. She takes herself seriously as a poetess. She hopes that people will remember her as a poetess and not just the fat woman in town killed by Butch.
Poetry is very difficult to interpret because everybody has a different approach, understand, meaning and point of view. My next writer is an African Americans whose poem is” Black Art” by Amiri Baraka “Black Art”. In the poem “ Black Art “, the poem is dedicated to African American to wake up and reverse the situation , by taking control over everything . The author urges the audience to be conscious and unconscious about African-American. Amiri is saying I need to see all the hardworking of the African American not just word but reality, proof, demonstration, and action been taking. In addition, in a poem the author express his anger; frustration to the audience how he feels and the action need take

Furthermore, poetry pours out raw emotion and truth though the use of metaphors, allusions and many more devices, which shed light on the value of life.
