Since the beginning of time, man
has been on a quest to find his inner self. This topic has
been the theme of many books and researches. This is no
exception, in the 1959 book, Siddhartha by Hermann
Hesse. In this particular story the main character,
Siddhartha, is trying to find his ‘inner self’. He tries to
accomplish this in many ways, one being self denial or
destruction. This is also the case in the 1996 book, Fight
Club by Chuck Palahniuk, in which the main theme
promoted is that destruction leads to purity. These two
works, written almost 40 years apart, which at first glance
seem to be complete opposites, are actually spawns from
the archetypal theme of man’s quest from self knowledge.
Many issues in each of these stories give reason to believe
that the authors had the same idea in mind. It could also be
said that the author of Fight Club may have read
Siddhartha. This is so because of the fact that many quotes
in Fight Club relate to Hinduism, which is the religion of the
heron in Siddhartha. For example, at a point in Fight Club,
a character questions his safety. The reply from the
character, Tyler Durden, is, “You’re as safe as a Hindu
cow”, is a metaphor that since the cow is very respected in
the Hindu religion and is not harmed. This may be mere
coincidence, but other information gives reason to believe
otherwise. Other than just saying that there is a connection
with something that is said in the two books, there is also
connections with the themes and styles of each book. In
Siddhartha the charters often speak in ways the you may
have to think about to understand the full meaning. This is
also true in the case of Fight Club. At one point in
Siddhartha, the character Govinda [Siddhartha’s friend]
says, “He who in contemplation, with purified mind,
immerses himself in Atman, Inexpressible in words is his
heart’s bliss.” These quotes convey the idea of the actually
enlightenment. In Fight Club, it is common to see quotes
like, “You are not a beautiful and unique snow flake” which
tells Tyler Durden’s followers that what they may think they
are is completely false. This type of put down is a major
ingredient in the stew of mayhem which leads to
enlightenment. When you compare the actual meanings of
Fight Club and Siddhartha, you will find that they are very
much alike. Fight Club is a release for people. It helps you
know yourself, know what you can do, and know your
limits. In the book, it would often be used by people with
Siddhartha is a much respected son of a Brahmin who lives with his father in ancient India. Everyone in their town expects Siddhartha to act like his father and become successful. Although he lives a very high quality life, Siddhartha is dissatisfied and along with his best friend Govinda- wants nothing more than to join the group of wandering ascetics called Samana’s. This group starves themselves, travels almost naked and must beg for the food they survive on. This group of people believes that to achieve enlightenment and self-actualization: body image, health, physical and material desires must be thrown away. Although this is the life Siddhartha wished for himself, he soon discovers that it is not the right choice for him. Near desolation, Siddhartha happens upon a river where he hears a strange sound. This sound signifies the beginning of the life he was born to live – the beginning of his true self. Hesse uses many literary devices to assure Siddhartha’s goal of self-actualization and creates a proper path for that success.
In Herman Hesse's Siddhartha, Unity is a reflecting theme of this novel and in life. Unity is "the state of being one or a unit; harmony, agreement in feelings or ideas or aims, etc." Unity is first introduced by means of the river and by the mystical word "Om." Direct commentary from Siddhartha and the narrator also introduces the theme.
While it seems as if Siddhartha’s early stages of following the teachings of others and immersing himself in material goods did not help Siddhartha on his quest, Siddhartha views these stages in a positive way. “I experienced by observing my own body and my own soul that I sorely needed sin, sorely needed concupiscence, needed greed, vanity… and to love it and be happy to belong to it.” (120). Siddhartha states how he needed sin, vanity, and all of these feelings to realize how corrupt his view of enlightenment was. Siddhartha understands, through viewing his own body and soul, that he needs to accept the world he lives in for what it is, and learn to love it. This flaw that Siddhartha has throughout much of the novel is crucial, as Hesse is able to display how wisdom can only be achieved by looking within the self, not through the words or doctrines of others.
“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” This quote by Helen Keller sums up the book Persepolis perfectly. Margi went through many hardships but in the end it strengthened her character and she was able to embrace the world in a better way. Margi is like a baby. The first time they try and take their first steps they topple over in a few seconds but each time they fall they learn and soon enough they are running as happily as can be. The events Margi experiences throughout the graphic novel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi helps her be able to deal with life`s hardship in .
Persepolis is a coming of age story written by Marjane Satrapi in 20001. Depicting a young girl growing up during the religious revolts in Iran. Throughout the story the main character loses her innocence. The author uses the appeals of genre, ethos, pathos, and logos, historical context, and illustration to depict the loss of innocence in the main character.
This, however, demonstrates a fundamental difference between 'Fight Club' and 'One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest': the 1990's society 'no longer breeds a contempt for the virtues of individualism [...] on the contrary, totalitarianism now resides in a thorough dislike for all things social, public, and collective,' as Henry Giroux wrote. The positivity of Fight Club may lie primarily in that it is an unsanctioned, underground, counterculture collective.
As I read the novel, I couldn’t help but to compare each word to the movie. I may have just recently watched it, but I was suddenly unsure of what I had seen. Was my memory failing me or were things truly that different? I felt like these differences changed the entire story line. The narrator shouldn’t be in a building that was about to be destroyed, this defeated the purpose of Project Mayhem. Then again, I was only on page one.
If you have watched the film Fight Club in regards to the early 1990’s and it’s American Consumerism it has a major effect on the countries early audiences which are males between 15 and 34 primarily all white. This led to a huge problem and was considered a controversial film. A film that would impact the world and the society in which people lived in leading to a public response. The huge question towards fight club is if the society would allow such in tolerant actions and if it’s possible to be controversial over the actions of rebellion. Fight Club has nothing to do with revolution but it is about the impossibility of it. This film criticizes the corporations and media and even pushes to criticize any big organizations looking to react against them. When the term Project Mayhem is introduced you noticed that a disorganized number or chaos, a group of men all wearing the same clothes chanting in unison in an anarchy way. The idea of individualism is terminated which is a major attribute of any revolution. For example fascism, communism or whatever idea you can think of. Some can argue that in this film the idea of individualism as it in introduced to us growing up is not the same but it’s a homogenization of the self, which is served to benefit the powers. This of it like this, you have the option to choose out of the two cars a land rover or a range rover. That is your freedom right there. This film helps open up the eyes of all values leading to individualism and has a strange complex with the main character and his different personality disorders. Fight club focuses on the ideas and the values of anyone who has power and those that are seeking to rebel against it.
Fight Club is not about winning or losing. Paul Palahniuk’s Fight Club is about the issues of masculinity in our modern capitalist society. It is a novel about men who resist conforming to what society defines as masculine. In our present day culture, men are presented with the ideal form of masculinity that they are expected to achieve such as being successful in the work place, going to the gym, and grooming yourself to look attractive. The unnamed narrator of the story undergoes an identity crisis, which is a result of capitalism; he struggles to find himself by going through various support groups before finally attending Fight Club. The consumer driven society has replaced the traditional values of masculinity, which creates conflicts and becomes the catalyst for Fight club: a place to re-masculinize through physical combat.
The film ‘Fight Club’ follows, to some degree of accuracy, the archetypal paradigm of the apocalyptic guidelines discussed in English 3910. Specifically the movie mostly deals with the genre of the personal apocalypse. Thus, following suit in relation to such works as ‘Lancelot’, ‘The Violent Bear it away’ and ‘Apocalypse Now’. ‘Fight Club’, essentiality contains the basic premise of these works, that is the purging of one’s identity through extreme measures and crisis; to ultimately arrive at a personal revelation in the end.

What is considered to be distracted driving in today’s world, is it just using devices or talking. Well in research article from BMC Public Health, “DD is an activity that can take a driver’s eyes off the road and divert his/her attention to something else”. Distracted driving includes but is not limited to using a mobile device, using a GPS, personal hygiene, talking to passengers, reading, even just adjusting the radio/stereo and list goes on and on. So how do adults and teen drivers classify these, well it is broken down in to 3 different parts. Visual, Manual, and Cognitive. Each equal having a negative effect on adult and teen drivers, cause them to become a DD. These three categories of DD, as found in Maclean’s Magazine, that each one has a certain effect on adult and teen drivers causing them to lose focus on the road in which makes them unaware of their surroundings. The Visual side is anything that cause the adult or teen driver to take their eyes off the road in which causing them to place their eyes on something else. The Manual side is in which the adult or teen driver takes his/hers hands off the wheel for something else in which takes control of motor vehicle away from driver.
Distracted driving is an activity that can divert a driver’s eyes off the road and cause them to lose his/her attention. Distracted driving includes texting,
Throughout Chuck Palahniuk’s life there has been violence that has surrounded him. Some of the events had happened outside of his world, the time period that was going on such as the Reagan Era, Cold War, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and so much more events. Then in the inside of his life there were tragic deaths that happened throughout his life, However at the same time some of the violent, fierce events that had occurred actually made him closer with people. The events that had throughout Chuck Palahniuk’s life helped him write his novel Fight Club and place the theme of violence throughout his novel.
The cdc.gov says, "Everyday more that 9 people are killed in the united states and more than 1,153 people are injured in car crashes that are reported involving a distracted driver."Distracted driving is driving while doing another activity that takes drivers ' attention away from driving.
