Fashion major students are often told that those interested in the field of fashion, cannot build real careers without design and merchandising qualifications. The fashion industry is a creative world of its own with many opportunities available. Fashion design involves artistic construction of clothing; whereas, fashion merchandizing is focused on the business aspect of fashion products. Based on the construction, business, and styling of clothing, fashion design and fashion merchandising are two different fields of study.
Fashion design and fashion merchandising college degrees are available on associates, bachelors, and masters levels. With a fashion design degree, different levels of clothing construction and fabric knowledge are offered; whereas; fashion merchandising provides courses in both buying and styling of clothing. In like manner, both fields of study focus on the selling of clothing.
Fashion designers can often be acknowledged as artist; they create, inspire and motivate. A designer is often inspired by their culture and the trends surrounding their everyday lives. ...
...ssed with such skills to be successful, there is always time to improve both business and designing skills to become a successful fashion designer.
People always ask me who my favorite designer is. I always find it to be a pretty impossible question. How can you choose between someone like Alexander McQueen and Channel, or what about the clothes I wear every day? I do not even know who designs most of those. I feel like there are too many designers with vastly different ascetics, yet, they are still so breathtakingly impeccable. So now, I choose Diana Vreeland. Although she did not design clothing, nearly her whole life was spent creating beauty and interest with a taste level that hit the sky. She also launched careers of countless people many still follow today and she created trend after trend with her worldly eccentric eye and not to mention an sensational appetite for originality and beauty.
Fashion is defined by a constant change of expressing the way we wish to look and this is affected by many things including social, cultural, commercial, religious, and political changes in society as well as the influence from fashion designers. The designers are to a degree the ones who choose what look and style they want to present and then the people decide whether or not they want to bring it in style. However, if one wants to bring a certain look into style they must consider mathematical concepts such as curves, surfaces, clothing assemblages, form, movement, shapes, and practicality if they wish their trend to be a
Fashion has been around ever since ancient times, since the time of the Romans, it survived the world wars and is yet today a business with rapid changes. Fashion started off as an art form, a way for the riches to show their social status with unique and innovative designs that only they could afford. It was a way to separate the social classes of the society. In this paper I will include the creator of haute couture, and how the following designers developed couture, as well as having leading names in today’s ready-to-wear industry. The list is long, but I chose to focus on the three most important designers of the modern fashion industry.
The Fashion Industry can be described as a glamorous world with cameras flashing, beautiful models strutting down the runway, in stunning and grand designs. What really goes on behind fashion’s dolled up doors is only an illusion compared to what reality is. Beautiful people, stylish clothing and timeless sophistication all make up the illusion of the glitz and glam of the fashion industry, but behind the curtains countless of models and designers constantly fall victim to this industry’s ever changing wrath. Fashion can be defined as a popular trend especially in styles of dress, ornaments or behavior. A model is a person who poses or displays for art purposes, fashion or other products and advertising. Fashion models are used mainly to promote products focusing mostly on clothing and accessory. The two main type of modeling in the fashion industry is commercial modeling and high fashion modeling. High Fashion models usually work for campaigns, designer’s collections and magazine editorials for high fashion designers. Runway modeling also known as “catwalk modeling” is displaying fashions and is generally performed by high fashion models. In my research paper, my main focus will be the multiple effects on high fashion models based upon the industry’s unregulated standards.
To begin with, I will look at each of the two subjects. Fashion is an extremely large subject with many sub-categories and can mean many different things, however in this essay I will take fashion to mean the popular clothing style. I will put emphasis on looking at high fashion as these are the leaders of their field. Fashion itself though, is not to be confused with clothing. Clothing is a part of fashion, but it is predominantly purely functional, for protection from different aspects of the environment. Fashion however, is primarily for image. It is a way to present individuality and personality. A physical mouldable form of expression. Designers wish to create works of art that can be worn, and this is wear clothing becomes an art form.
The world famous designer and fashion icon Coco Chanel once said “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, and what is happening.” Fashion is something that has evolved multiple times and is also something that has stood the test of time since the very beginning. It’s something that effects society from things like people’s first impressions of what they assume about you to defining your social class from the wealthier to the not so wealthy. Fashion itself is a reflection of social, economic, political and cultural changes. It expresses modernity, symbolizing the spirit of the times. "Fashion is the most powerful art there is. Its movement, design,
...r became more creative person in the fashion shoot, after the designer. The overall photograph would sell your garment to the best ability that the photographer could achieve. It was not just about being a beautiful model in the photograph, there had to be other ways of making the photograph appealing than the simple lacklustre way of being beautiful. Although, every woman wants to be beautiful, the photographer wanted to challenge the appearance of beauty. And also challenge the way we looked at people that were not beautiful, but had a unique quality to them. The fashion photographer had a lot of power in Fashion; they could make a normal street person become the key icon for desire and envy. The photograph had the power to sell the clothes using anyone the photographer pleased, and the designer didn’t mind as long as their clothes were being recognized, and sold.
From the moment I starting my educational path I knew four years wouldn’t be enough to fill me with all the dimensions of the fashion industry. This led me to make my decision to apply for the M.S. Global Fashion Enterprise degree. When asked how this program at Philadelphia University would benefit me, I will begin by giving a background on my previous education. I started my undergraduate degree at Buffalo State College in upstate New York pursuing a Bachelor degree in Fashion Merchandising. After being in the program for a year I was confident in knowing I needed a change. My journey changed drastically when I moved down to sunny Fort Lauderdale, Florida where I transferred to the Art Institute under the same major. I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fashion Merchandising come this June 2014. My experience at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale has uncovered my love of education and research.
Fashion and film are art forms that have coexisted for decades, and although they are different, they also possess similar qualities. Pamela Church Gibson wrote in her book Film and Celebrity Culture that “film had a greater influence on fashion than any other form of visual culture” (Gibson 55). Fashion is an important part of film as it aids directors and writers in bringing characters and their personalities to life. Simultaneously, fashion has also benefited from films, as films are a popular source of inspiration for designers, who can be inspired by anything from storylines to characters. In an article, titled Film and Fashion: Just Friends, for the New York Times, Ruth La Ferla wrote that “wittingly or not, those viewers take in colors, subtle tactile impressions or an overall atmosphere that can linger in the mind for years, part of a vast store of images that may surface at any time” (La Ferla).
My essay is going to be a discussion on whether fine art, fashion and designers are linked with each other. On starting my essay I looked up the definition of Fine art, the term is used to distinguish the variation of creative art forms, developed by humans. Some of the many concepts which fall under this category are painting, drawing, calligraphy, sculpture etc. I agree that fine art uses lots of visually appealing methods which seem graceful, like calligraphy the work produced is quite delicate and pretty. The area in fine art which I seek to specialise in is fashion it’s an expression in today’s society which defines the popular trends and style within clothes, foot wear and accessories. I feel that many designers of today create outfits, as a way of expressing their difficult to understand innovations. Artists and designers are arguably alike due to using similar creative techniques, and media to plan and craft their masterpiece. Art has always been a main influence in fashion, without fine art the majority of the vast selection of patterns and clothes wouldn’t have existed in the past or even the present day. Take Yves Saint Laurent’s Mondrian dress, created in 1965. Yves Saint Laurent was inspired by the 1920s abstract geometric pattern painting of Piet Mondrian work. Yves Saint Laurent realised during the 1960s that the simplicity and the flat planes, were ideal for the developing sack dress. Later on Yves Saint Laurent’s dress was replicated many times due to being so popular. As shown by Yves Saint Laurent, The patterns on dresses and other fabric weren’t an accident made by the designer who created them. But in fact inspirations from artists work. I believe that fashion is built upon art and culture of an entire era, si...
I enjoy making sketches of clothing that one day will hopefully be available in stores all over. Fashion designing in my opinion is a way to express the unique side of your creativity, also fashion designing is a career that I believe I can achieve in so highly if I stay focused and continue to putting forth effort in my creations. I could see interior designing as a possible career in my future because it’s somewhat similar to fashion designing just in the designing area. Both involve having a since of style and an eye for color, texture and pattern coordination.
While growing up, I realized the benefits a person has when they personally own their own business. You can make your own schedule, personally control your finances, and essentially have complete control of your business Of course upon this realization; I came to the conclusion that I was going to be my own boss. I have always taken pride in how I present myself including how I dress. The limitless nature of fashion and its versatility has always intrigued me. One empowering aspect of clothing that is so fascinating is how it enables people to express themselves. Because of these interests, I have come to the conclusion that I wish to own a fashion boutique. In order to pursuit the path of becoming a fashion boutique owner, it is essential that I obtain a degree in business management, evaluate my own skills that make me ideal for the job, and
The philosophy with which I approach my education are that all institutions of learning are somewhat like a factory assembly line, where students are molded and are expected to meet certain specific standards by the time they graduate. Education is significantly important for a positive future. Education allows people to reach their fullest potential and help others later on reach their fullest potential. In this paper in I will try to provide information on how I came about choosing my career choice in the fashion industry, from academic excellence, life-long learning, collaboration, openness, integrity, and service.
