Genograms are key to helping you determine the patterns and differences that are consistent in your family structure. Genograms can also help you to determine why certain subsystems engage in certain behaviours.
While formulating the genogram it was concluded that there is consistent patterns and differences throughout the different generations. The patterns and differences found include consistency in health, education, language, nature of relationships and addictions.
The characteristics in my family that are a result of different medical illness include different heart condition, Angina, and cancer. Throughout the generations one is able to make the conclusion how each person is predisposed to these conditions because there is a constant trend between the different generations. Within the matriarchy side of my family there is a consistent trend of adopting children. This trend is seen with my grandfather’s family as well as my grandparent’s own family. Adoption was key to this family structure because they were giving children different opportunities; this trend continued to my aunt’s family. On the patriarchal side there is no history of adoption, all family members are of blood relation. The difference concluded here is that the matriarchy side of the family is more open to new and different people while, the patriarchal side of the family is very closed on who they accept. This conclusion can also be applied to why the different family relations are the way they are. Within the matriarchal family one is not worried about fitting in and staying within the family “norm”. Within the patriarchal side of the family there is constant worry about fitting the “norm”. This could result in distant relationships because family members do not want to constantly worry about fitting
