Older Adult (Mrs. Estella Luna) Mrs. Luna is an 83 year old woman who now lives alone with her small dog, Buster and her two cats, Lucy and Ethel.? Estella lost her husband, Roger, two years ago after a painful treatment for lung cancer.? She had cared for him in the home where they had been living for 48 years.? The home had been their pride and joy; they had put lots of time and energy into their vegetable and flower gardens for many years.? Estella has seen many changes in the neighborhood where she and her husband raised their two children and where their grandchildren have often come to visit.? She still has some friends in the neighborhood, and it is this fact that helps her feel safe, although the crime rate in the area is quite high. Estella and her husband were very close and had a deep and joyful relationship.? Caring for him as he died was very difficult for her both emotionally and physically.? The one skill that I used more of was empathy; I wanted the client to know that I understood her situation as well her feelings. At the end of our conversation, I summarized everything that we talked about, especially her want to open up to her parents and express herself to them. She mentioned that she wants them to fell empathy towards her, because the lack of parental empathy that she felt when she was younger, has even affected her in her adult life (Kilpatrick,2005).

I always believed every case worker should listen carefully to client’s problems because this is the only way you will help solve the issues. The Importance of Discussing with the Client the Level of Support He or She Requires in a Familiar Language
Having an open relationship can facilitate sharing of important information necessary for identifying and solving problems that are interfering with the quality of life of the client. Building a rapport is also important because it begins with the first contact. When I show courteous and respect attitude towards client, it helps ease the client and calms them down because when clients come in, they are already anxious and have doubts whether anyone can help or not. The approach that is used to help the client specify, elaborate, and clarify the concerns that brought the client to the agency is just being warm, being courteous and just simply asking questions in order to be clear and concise with what the client needs. The client is actively involved in the process of identifying and defining their problems, concerns, and strengths all the way, because I help them find the resources. Sometimes, the agency that I refer them to need the client to contact them and it is the client that they want to talk to and the client has to call them and do what they request. This is good because it allows the client to have self-determination and allows them to be involved in solving their

What I’ve gathered from experience and this course has helped me to achieve a level of confidence to continue learning how to implement new techniques in the business world. I strongly feel I can use the problem solving strategy I’ve learned, though out my college career and in my future endeavors. By achieving success through the problem solving activity I’m able to assess the situation, find any possible strategies and decide my best course of action. Some of those things I was already quite familiar with but having the ability to design the chosen message was something new for me. Being able to appropriately accommodate to my audience is critical when relaying the message. Knowing the best way to deliver the message is something I’ve always struggled with before. The counseling session began with the introductions where I introduced myself as the counselor and later introduced my client. This stage is important in any counseling session since it is the time of exploration and focusing according to Gerard Egan as quoted by Wright (1998) in his essay on couselling skills. It is in this session that I was able to establish rapport and trust with my client in order to come up with a working and fruitful relationship with him. During this stage I made use of skills like questioning, where I would pose a question directly to my client, sometimes I would choose to just listen to what the client wanted to speak out while in some instances I would be forced to paraphrase the question if I felt the client did not understand the question I had asked previously. There were also other times when I would reflect through silence. During such a period, I got time to study the client and the information he had given. This being a difficult area, since some clients may not be able to volunteer information to you as the counselor, I decided to assure the client of confidentiality of any information he was willing to share with me with a few exceptions which I also told him about. Being open to him about the only times the information may not be confidential was part of my building rapport and establishing trust with him. I therefore, decided to ask the client what information he wanted to share with me and lucky enough he was ready to speak to me about different issues that he was going through.
