Making a good decision Making candy and soda banned from school is so far a great idea and a good healthy choice. Many schools have banned candy and soda from their campus because they think it’s bad for kids and they want to keep their students healthy and in fit. About one third of American children are unhealthy, overweight, or obese because of making wrong choices and not eating right. Say that soda and candy weren’t banned from schools, it would cause many things. For example, most likely if people were buying sodas from a vending machine they would be spilling it everywhere. That would cause stickiness and a dirty floor. Janitors would have to be cleaning every second. Most importantly it’s very unhealthy for you, a can of soda has at least 300+ calories. Kids who are obese and overweight are in more danger, they can be consuming more and more sugar and calories everyday during school and increasing their risk of diabetes or even cancer. Shouldn’t school teach you how to make healthy choices? Not put vending machines in every corner of the …show more content…
In our vending machine that we have here, they include chips, cookies, gatorades, pop tarts, and many other unhealthy things. Everyday I see students buying from that vending machine, they are wasting that money on being unhealthy. A lot of schools try their best to keep students as healthy as possible and giving them healthy meals and fruits and vegetables. I think that is really generous, Keeping us healthy and giving us good meals, instead of giving us all these bad and unhealthy things. Candy is one of the biggest selling things right now and is something that every kid eats and wants. Kids who have cavities or have a high cholesterol is because of all the candy and sweets they eat and are given by most
Unhealthy foods are what make the money for schools and that is why they serve them for students. (Schlafy) Schools feel like they need the extra money in the budget, even though it is at the student’s expense. Data shows that nearly 60% of all middle schools in the US serve soda from vending machines. (Schlafy) Soda is very high in sugar and is not at all good for children, but it is still sold in school vending machines. The ways food in schools is now are way too high in fats and sugars. This is not good for the children and very bad in the long run. Elementary schoolchildren have an estimated $15 billion of their own money that they can use to buy whatever they want in schools, and parents have almost another $160 billion to give students for food money. (Schlafy) Big businesses see this as a big source of profit and therefore encourage children to buy their products, and want them to be offered in school because of th4e likelihood of children buying the business’s product. All in all, obesity in the US is greatly influenced by the foods offered in schools
...can get. Others may claim students may become hyper after eating too much sugar. This all goes back to parents limiting how much money students can take to school. If needed, teachers can monitor how much sugar a student consumes. Students should know their boundaries. If all issues against school stores can be solved by implementing rules, then it’s not so unhealthy to have a school store or vending machines.
Children are often sweet and adorable, but many times they may be eating too many sweets. According to the Channel Four News, it has been shown that the number one disease in children is the reoccurrence of caries, also known as cavities. Could it be too many sweets or could it be the lack of flossing and brushing teeth? For instance, many children go to bed or wake up without brushing their teeth and go throughout the day eating all sorts of food and candy. The result of eating and not brushing could lead to plaque build up and decaying of teeth. This leaves a child extremely unhappy and in excruciating pain. So who is going to fix this pain? Who is going to help prevent decay in millions of people’s mouths? Today, the world is lucky to have a well-studied field of dentistry.. Dentistry has much history, various specialties, advancements, and an irresistible salary.
Did you know that chewing gum can cause jaw problems which can lead to TMJ(Temporomandibular joint dysfunction).which is a really bad syndrome that causes “Pain and compromised movement of the jaw joint and the surrounding muscles”.Now that's only one reason why gum is not good for you but there is more. Here are the other the reasons why gum is bad for you ,it is an distraction, and it can cause littering.
Some people may question why schools are only banning soft drinks and not junk food as well. Authors Beverly Ann and Ballaro Griswold address the concern recanting that schools do not want to only ban junk foods, because they amount to tens of thousands of dollars to schools profit annually. It is ridiculous to think that only banning soda will change anything overall. Even the artificial coloring and preservatives used in junk foods attribute hyperactivity in students(pars. 2-4). When I was in school, the lunches consisted of pizza sticks, biscuits and gravy, every kind of chip, and every Little Debbie snack imaginable. As it was back then, children can buy unlimited snacks and drinks. Some kids used to eat two or three pizza sticks, a bag of chips, “meatloaf”, all washed down with a Dr. Pepper. Making a little dent in the issue by banning sodas is chipping away at the bigger problem of things, sure, but it is not enough to make a remarkable difference. If students have such poor eating habits, they most likely stem from the home they grow up
In “Hooked on ‘Caramel-Colored Gold,” Melody Nelson claims “Despite the increased awareness of the benefits of good nutrition, we are a nation hooked on junk food, and many school administrators are taking advantage of the situation ” (par. 3). Nelson propose a ban on vending machines in schools because junk food is unhealthy for children, and they risk future health problems. I agree with Melody Nelson and believe that vending machines should be banned from school campuses, because they sell unhealthy food, they cause more money to schools for hiring extra custodians, and they are affecting children learning abilities.
Although there is a risk of upsetting people who are not worried about the health and wellbeing of today’s youth with selfish reasoning for wanting to keep junk food, ridding schools of junk foods will prove itself to be very beneficial. Children can choose healthier options without being ridiculed by others, wondering if what they are eating is good for them, and/or worrying about negative effects. One’s health cannot be overlooked as it is the livelihood of that person and much more. It is not a subject that can be taken lightly. Two-thirds of Americans are overweight and unhealthy. Many parents tend to think that starting young with the sweets will make them healthier and especially healthier when they’re grown adults. Parents have major reasons to why they will let their children have sweets and one reason is that it is a tradition to bring cupcakes or a cake into their child’s class for their birthdays. Another reason is that treats attract happiness in kids. Next reason is that it is the parent’s responsibilities to train their kids to make the food choices. All these reasons are good reasons for parents for giving their kids sweets. As seen above, you can tell that Michael and Stanley were given sweets when they were children and you can see how it is affecting them now with free pretzel
Also, since over 12 million children are in child care centers every day, there are not any regulations against feeding children unhealthy food during the day (Salisbury). This impacts the growth and development of children at a young age. If the food is not regulated, than it is very possible that they could be prone to involuntary obesity. According to the Journal of School Health, students tend to gravitate toward less healthy foods and bigger portion sizes. Unfortunately, this leads us to another cause of obesity, which the increased portion of the foods and drinks that are in vending machines. This means that they are eating a lot of extra
The soda ban is a bad idea because there is no evidence it solves anything. In the argumentative article “Soda’s a Problem but…” by Karin Klein, she states “If people are so helpless against soda… people would simply buy two 16-ounce cups.” (Klein, 289) This evidence illustrates that if people wanted more soda they could easily get.
When you send your children off to school, you might worry about bullying or about their academic performance, but you generally don’t consider their lunch-time meal to be a potential problem. Now imagine, for a moment, your son or daughter is given the option between a juicy cheeseburger with greasy French fries and a healthier chicken salad. It’s a no-brainer what choice they will make. Now, stop imagining because you don’t have to. Instances like this are a reality everyday in many school cafeterias. In 2005, John Esterbrook, a writer for CBS News, reported on a government survey showing that junk foods are in competition with healthy counterparts in nine out of ten schools (par. 1). Today, although four years later, little improvement has been made to ensure students in schools are eating healthy.
To start with, limiting how much soda a person can consume, enforces restrictions that violate a person’s daily life. According to Sidney Anne stone, the author of the text ‘’Ban the Ban!’’ she says,’’
The vending machines which have mostly sodas and chips are also convenient for kids, but they are consuming tremendous amount of sugars that are so unhealthy for their diets. In high schools, their hormones are changing and when they eat or drink foods that are not healthy, their hormones respond to those, by making them hyper, unable to learn and to comprehend subjects better in schools.
Sodas are the most consumed beverages in the United States of America, the average american will consume forty-four gallons per year. Currently sixty-eight percent of americans are considered obese or over weight in the United States. Although soda is not the main cause for this as well as other health issues but it is a big part of it. The ban on soda is a good thing because it will help decrease obesity americans, it will help decrease bad behavior in children, and it will help decrease depression in teens.
When talking about school, we think of children learning different subjects, history, math, science and etc. I think learning about health and healthy life choices is as important as any other subject, and that should not just be restricted to classrooms. Schools have a great opportunity to educate young people about the importance of being healthy. We all know it is no secret that junk food makes you fat, but studies have shown that over the past ten years, obesity has doubled to 8.5 percent among six year olds and trebled to an astonishing 15 percent among 15 year olds. If we do not do anything about it, then this generation of children could be the first to live shorter lives than their parents.
