They are many ways that early year’s workers can communicate with parents by showing empathy, interest by active listening and by being honest. This encourages parents to talk to the workers and trust them. Communication between workers and parents can also be over the phone rather than face to face and could also be through email. For example a worker may email a parent to arrange a meeting or talk to them over the phone about their child. Communication can also be done through letters; workers in an early year setting may send a letter out to parents to tell them important information. Parents could also find out information by looking at the early years website if they had one and workers could post new information and dates on it.

In order to overcome this barrier workers would need to email parents, phone parents or hold information sessions at flexible times such as in the evening or on a Saturday. Workers could also update the settings website with news and information so parents can access it. Another barrier that could occur in the early years setting is the parent(s) could have a disability that affects their mobility; in order to overcome this barrier workers could choose a place that suits the needs of the parent and find out how to meet the parents needs by helping them with doors and providing ramps and adjusting height of chairs. Workers should also check that the setting complies with the Disability Discrimination Act 2005. A parent may also have a disability that affects their communication and therefore workers should find out how to meet that parents needs by speaking more clearly or getting a signer to help support the parent with their communication. Another barrier in communication could be cultural differences in communication style such as choice of language, proximity and eye contact. If this barrier occurs workers should respect that people communicate in different ways and use different styles and workers should make sure they are sensitive towards the parent. In an early year setting barriers between workers and parents should try to be overcome as this can affect a parent and workers relationship and will affect their communication. It is important that they are overcome in order to communicate effectively and discuss the child as if they didn’t the parent wouldn’t know how they child was acting and wouldn’t be able to support them at
