1. I am working with a child named Sophia Lowry. Sophia is two and a half years old. She has two half older siblings from her father’s side. Jamie Lee who is thirteen and Ben who is eleven. She has been in the system for almost a year now. She lives with her mother and father in a two bedroom flat. Her father is a plumber and her mother is unemployed. At the weekends her two brothers live with her. She is developing well physically as she is 34 inches in height and 30lbs. She has blond hair and blue eyes. (100 words)

Family has a huge impact on Sophia’s development. She comes from an extended family, this impacts on her emotional, language, and social development. Children at this age start to experience a variety of emotions such as joy, anger pleasure and frustration. Temper tantrums occur between eighteen to thirty six months and should be dealt in a calming environment. Adults are advised not to show anger during this time as it is a normal developmental stage for the child. When a child is having a tantrum adults are advised to adopt a friendly tone of voice, asking the child to do something rather than instruct it. It is advised that “After the tantrum is over the child should be hugged to make it feel secure and to let it know that the normal relationship has returned unchanged” (O’Hagan 2001, p.159). This is a problem when it comes to Sophia’s emotional development as her mother is an authoritarian parent. During tantrums Sophia is instructed rather than asked. Sophia’s mother fails to do this after she has had a tantrum which leaves Sophia feeling emotionally hurt and confused. During the weekend Sophia’s two half older siblings come to live with her. This causes conflict as Sophia isn’t use to sharing her toys or her parent’s attention. This can leave her to feel that she has competition with her two older half siblings which can impact on her emotional development. The role of the early childhood professionals in supporting Sophia during this stage of her development is very important. It is extremely necessary to have good communication between the professional, Sophia and Sophia’s family. Assessments should be carried out such as questions regarding prenatal care and birth circumstances. “Partnership involves parents, families and practitioners working together to benefit children. Each recognises, respects and values what the other does and says” (Aistear 2009). It is important for early childhood professionals to form a relationship with children’s parents/guardians especially during changes in children’s lives. These changes may include a new setting, getting to know a new practitioner or getting use to a new baby or home. It is important for childcare practitioners to work with parents for a number of reasons. They can provide a more emotionally secure environment for the children, they can help children create a sense of identity and belonging in the setting by engaging with and finding out family values and beliefs. It is important that childcare practitioners find out if Sophia suffers from any allergies that they will have to give her support for.
