There are various theories of development which have an influence on current practices in schools today. Theorists such as Piaget looked at the cognitive development of children. Piaget believed that children developed thoughts as a result of their experiences. He also suggested that childrenâ€TMs thinking and learning is different to adults. Children have four stages of cognitive development. Stage 1 is Sensori-motor, from 0-2 years babies learn through their senses and interaction with their environment and understand the world through actions. Stage 2 is Pre-operations, from2-7 years, children learn through experiences with real objects and use words to make sense of the world around them. Stage 3 is Concrete operations, from 7-11 years, children continue to learn through real objects and gain extra information from using language. Stage 4 is Formal operations, from 11 years to adult, children and adults learn to use abstract thinking to understand the world. An example of this theory linking to practice is in school, milk is served in blue cups, but if the milk is served in a pink cup one day they wonâ€TMt believe itâ€TMs milk because of past experiences. The 3rd level of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, is the needs for belonging, love, and affection. Maslow described these needs as less basic than physiological and security needs. Relationships such as friendships, romantic attachments, and families help fulfill this need for companionship and acceptance, involvement in social, community, or religious groups.
For ease of review in discussing the developmental theorists and their theories of human development I have subdivided each theorist into their respective schools of psychology. These schools include the psychoanalytic school, behavioral school, humanistic school, cognitive school, and the individual schools of psychology. Each developmental theorist holds their own unique ideas and theories about various components of human development. I will be discussing the contributions of each of these theorists.

According to Abraham Maslow, individuals are motivated to fulfill specific needs (Winston, 2016). To outline these needs he created a hierarchy of needs that proceeds upward in order of what human beings require to live a full life (Winston, 2016). The first of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs being physiological needs, or the most basic, including bodily functions such as eating, drinking and reproducing (Harrigan & Commons, 2015).
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs are the things stages in life by which you develop from a primitive creature, to a more human being. These stages include physiological needs, safety and security, belongingness, esteem, and finally self-actualization. I subconsciously work toward each one of these levels every single day. Although it seems basic, the hierarchy is much more in depth than one might think.
The first type of need in Maslow 's theory is Self-actualization. In this stage, you begin to fulfill your potential, accept reality, and solve problems and being more creative. The biological theory refers to the focus of genetic factors that assist the child in adjusting to their environment. The theory highlights the importance of maturation of children’s bodies and their motor skills. The restriction of the biological theory however, is that it discounts the impact of children’s experiences. Behaviorism theory concentrates on children’s behavioral and emotional responses to changes in the environment. The argument against behaviorism is that it focuses on children’s visible behavior and ignores their thought process. The social learning theory interprets children’s beliefs and goals as affecting their behavior by what they learn when they observe others. In the psychodynamic theory, emphasis is on the interaction between internal conflict, early childhood experiences and the environment. Theorists focus on the personality development and how these early experiences play a role later in life. In cognitive-development theories, the concentration is on how the thinking process changes over time. Although it promotes adults to recognize children as curious minds trying to make sense of their environment, the theories lack clear stages that a child’s thought process goes through. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs arranges basic human needs in the order in which people strive to fulfill them. Physiological needs, basic human needs, are the first necessity on Maslow’s hierarchy that people attempt to fulfill. Thankfully, I am able to say that all my physiological needs are met, for I am blessed with an abundant supply of food, water, shelter, and clothing. I cannot imagine what it must be like for people to live without having their physiological needs met, but I do understand that it has to be extremely difficult for people to focus on any other needs when they are living without the essentials of survival.

Abraham Maslow did studies of the basic needs of human beings. He put these needs into a hierarchical order. This means that until the need before it has been satisfied, the following need can not be met (Encyclopedia, 2000). For example, if someone is hungry they are not thinking too much about socializing. In the order from lowest to highest the needs are psychological, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization. The first three are classified as lower order needs and the last two are higher order (Hierarchy, 2000). Without meeting these needs workers are not going to be as productive as they could otherwise. The first three are considered to be essential to all humans at all times. The last two have been argued but are mostly considered to be very important as well.
The Hierarchy of needs theory, by Maslow, shows the basic and the advanced needs that the person should fulfill to reach his or her highest potential. That is why the theory is best depicted as a pyramid including seven stages. The first stage is physiological needs: water, body temperature, sleep, and sex. When one satisfies those needs, he or she can go to the next stage. Safety needs is the second stage. Here, the person is concerned about his safety and stability, so he tries to find a good job to support himself financially, and also find a good home in a safe place. The third stage is belongingness and love. To love and be loved and accepted becomes very important in this stage, so the person starts to worry about his relationships. Being accepted and loved will lead successfully to the fourth stage, which is esteem needs. In this level, the person is more concerned about achieving and gaining approval.
