All humans have certain needs as show by Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Maslow theorized that there are five tiers of human needs that all humans are motivated to achieve and some needs take precedence over others. The first set of needs is the biological and physiological needs such as air, food, water, warmth, and shelter. Following, are the safety needs such as security. The third tier encompasses belongingness and love needs such as intimacy and friendship. The fourth tier: esteem needs includes feeling of accomplishment. Lastly, after all of these needs are met one may obtain self-actualization, or reaching ones full potential. Maslow's hierarchy of needs was later expanded to include a 5th, 6th, and 8th tier called transcendence needs. The 8th tier encompasses helping others to achieve self actualization. One’s desire is egoistic if and only if it concerns the benefit of oneself and not anyone else. On the other hand ones desires are altruistic if and only if it concerns the benefit of at least someone other than oneself. The pros of altruism state that people will begin to take advantage of you, it is impossible to only make others happy, and you would be neglecting your own needs. The pros of egoism include establishing a greater sense personal identity in a community, promoting a sustainable household, it also promotes that all basic personal needs will always be met. The other half of this argument, the con sides of egoism, state that it will ruin relationships, it completely eliminates objectivity, you are neglecting the needs of others, you would be isolated and independent, and it requires that everyone practice its philosophy. At the base of the hierarchy are the physiological needs of human beings. This level consists of a human's need for food, water, oxygen, sleep, and sex. Homeless people are at this level of the hierarchy because their concern is in obtaining those things necessary for survival. Once an individual has met these needs, they begin to seek steady work, financial security, stability at home, and a predictable environment. This level consists of overachievers and workaholics. People such as this are so concerned with their income that they do not feel that the amount of time they work is sufficient enough. If an individual meets all of these needs, then that person has obtained their general need for safety. Once human beings have obtained safety, they strive to fulfill their social needs. At this level humans concern themselves with affiliation, belongingness and love, affection, close relationships, family ties, and group membership. This is a particularly crucial level because if these needs are not met, then humans feel an overwhelming sense of loneliness and alienation. All the needs for love having been met, an individual seeks social status, respect, recognition, achievement, and power. All of these needs combine to fulfill an individual's need for esteem, and failing to satisfy this need, an individual endures a sense of inferiority and a lack of importance. All human beings are placed at one of these four levels, striving to satisfy the needs at that level. If there comes a time in which an individual has obtained all of the needs on the hierarchy, that person becomes ready, willing, and able to strive for self-actualization. According to Maslow, self-actualization is a distinctly human need to fulfill one's potential. As Maslow himself states, "A musician must make music, and artist must paint, a poet must write, if he is ultimately to be at peace with himself.
Egoism is an ethical theory that views self-interest as the basis of morality. Essentially, it is a view that people will do whatever brings about the best consequences and is better for oneself. Egoism derives from the Latin term “ego” meaning “I.” The “best consequences” meaning the actions make that individual happier. Moreover, people can go back to the first need at any point of their life. Psychological egoism, a descriptive claim about human nature, states that humans by nature are motivated only by self-interest. To act in one's self-interest is to act mainly for one's own good and loving what is one's own (i.e. ego, body, family, house, belongings in general). It means to give one's own interests higher priority then others'. "It (psychological egoism) claims that we cannot do other than act from self-interest motivation, so that altruism-the theory that we can and should sometimes act in favor of others' interests-is simply invalid because it's impossible" (Pojman 85). According to psychological egoists, any act no matter how altruistic it might seem, is actually motivated by some selfish desire of the agent (i.e., desire for reward, avoidance of guilt, personal happiness).
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs are the things stages in life by which you develop from a primitive creature, to a more human being. Ethical egoism is a normative theory that states that our actions should to be done from the perspective of self-interest. Which essentially means that the actor must always be the beneficiary of his action. Some Egoist who doesn’t support the golden rule say that the golden rule does not emphasize claims to moral autonomy.
This is by having to interpret an egoist’s position from a different view i.e. a sympathetic way. Here we say that the egoist has a world that he sees in his mind in which only his interests are maximized without regarding the other people’s welfare. So an egoist’s effort and main policy would be to act in a way that would ensure this kind of world that exists in his mind is implemented in one way or another. Once the person decided to adopt this idea as his ideal, then he wouldn’t advocate for universal egoism as this definitely calls for other people to be concerned about others welfare, something which they are against. As we may all view it as being irregular, quite contrary it would be perfectly appropriate for them considering that their goal of creating the world in which his own interests have been enhanced. Abraham Maslow did studies of the basic needs of human beings. He put these needs into a hierarchical order. This means that until the need before it has been satisfied, the following need can not be met (Encyclopedia, 2000). For example, if someone is hungry they are not thinking too much about socializing. In the order from lowest to highest the needs are psychological, safety, social, esteem, and self-actualization. The first three are classified as lower order needs and the last two are higher order (Hierarchy, 2000). Without meeting these needs workers are not going to be as productive as they could otherwise. The first three are considered to be essential to all humans at all times. The last two have been argued but are mostly considered to be very important as well.
