The Metamorphosis as a Pre-Existentialism Existential Work

Nietzsche once spoke of choice when he said, "I call a lie: wanting not to see something one does see, wanting not to see something as one sees it... The most common lie is the lie one tells to oneself; lying to others is relatively the exception.” In The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Gregor Samsa thinks his appearance is just a trick his ey0es play on him because he doesn’t want to believe it. Gregor is like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, except he becomes uglier instead of prettier, starting out as a human and turning into a vermin. Gregor’s choices have impacted his physical appearance. The Metamorphosis is an Existential work because Gregor decides to work in spite of the hatred he has for his job, and therefore his appearance changes to mimic what his business and family think of him and he becomes a vermin.
