The excessive game play is a community problem in Macedonia that should be prevented because it results with addiction which symptoms cause lethal consequences. The possibility for creating a virtual life attracts people to participate in computer games that later on interfere in their lives. A decade ago children in Macedonia used to play with marbles and “seek and hide” outside, while adults went to play sports or in the gym. Today, in the era of computerization, life has relocated from reality in computer games. Video game addiction is another type of addiction in the modern age.
First of all, you should keep in mind that video/computer game addiction is not an official DSM-IV diagnosis but many institutions worldwide do researches about the problem. According to the Brown’s (1997) component model the symptoms must be present for a significant period of time in order to indicate addiction . The symptoms are social withdrawal, preoccupation with computer games and lost of interest in other activities . Although many gamers won’t realize that they enclose from their social circles, their friends and families are usually the first to notice. For example, you call your friend to go out with you as you do every Friday, but suddenly he often starts to come up with excuses not to. After a while you find out that he started to play this video game and he always talks about that. You become aware that something is happening with your friend. Finally, video games addiction should be taken seriously because it affects gamers’ lives. Each individual should take prevention measures for this community problem and help people who are struggling with this addiction in order to avoid the harmful consequences. In time when computers are taking great part of our time we should try to keep in touch with the reality regardless of the appeal of the virtual life.

As his PlayStation fires to life, he replays scenes from the day in his head of being shoved into the lockers by Billy, unable to form the words to impress Sussie, and sitting alone at lunch listening to the popular kids laugh and joke, ignoring him as if he did not exist. No one understands him. No one cares about him, because he is not strong, charming, or popular. All that is soon avoided as Tommy dives into a world where he controls everything and everyone either fears or loves him. If he fails, all he must do is reset. Here he can be anything he wants, and he can do and have it all.
Excessive amount of gameplay can cause signs of addiction and can result in isolation. Teenagers and young adults can use video games as the source of an escape from reality, forcing them, to push back their social life or erase it altogether, inherit anti-social tendencies, and lose the ability to cope with things they can’t control. Playing for hours straight can cause seizures and involuntary movements therefore you should take several breaks in between game play. Some games that are intended for adult are accidently bought or played by teenagers which in many cases contain violent and sexual scenes. This can cause acts of violence in the real world such as school shootings, mistreatment of women, and gang violence. I know when I first got a PS3 I wasn’t allowed to Grand Theft Auto because it was rated for M (mature- 17+ years old and contained sexual content and violence) but war games was rated the same without the sexual content and I was allowed to play
An online game takes a man’s life after more than a day’s worth of game play fatigue stops his heart, a result of his addiction to online games. Today there are many people who are highly addicted to online games and the consequence of it can be serious. I believe that Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs) cause more harm to players than they do good, and the government should require game companies to add time restriction features to their game to ameliorate the problem of online game addiction.
The controversial topic of video game addiction is what I have decided to focus my multi-genre research project on. Although a multitude of people do not even know of the existence of such a problem in today's society, I can assure you that this is becoming an increasingly greater problem effecting people around the world of all ages. A video game addiction is just like any other addiction. These addicts seek stimulus from their subjects and cannot refrain from it. It impedes on their daily lives, interrupts their way of logic, and has no real benefits. The major reason why addictions begin is because it helps them cope with their emotions. For them, it’s another world that is immersive and engaging to the point that they are entranced by it. Video games and the Internet provide a plethora of communities and people to meet. Since it is easier to remain anonymous on the Internet, there are opportunities to create alter egos. As harmless as it may sound, there are negative side effects that stem from their addiction.
Game addicts cannot go on about that day without playing a game. They will spend at an average of twenty-four hours a week on gaming alone. Many game addicts forget about the everyday basic necessity such as eating, bathing and sleeping and continue on their games. Seungseob lee, a gamer addict who did not take care of himself, “played Starcraft for more than fifty consecutive hours at an internet cafe before suffering a fatal heart attack” (DAnastasio). The game addiction’s danger to health is tremendous mostly among adults and teenagers that are not under adult supervision. A solution to the game addiction problem would be simply prevent the person from accessing the game, but that also causes major problems. Brett, a gamer addict, thought of suicide when he wasn’t allowed to play his video game. He states, “At the time [I] felt anything had to be better than not being allowed to play Counter Strike” (DAnastasio). Brett ended up getting depression and started failing his classes. Brett cut himself away from the world and won’t even come out of the room. Excessive gaming can also “. . . induce pseudo hallucinatory-like experiences” (Clark). It happens when the gamer gets off the game after a long hours of playing. The gamer feels as if he or she is still in the game. "Everything in moderation." Nothing is healthy if you constantly do it. This could range from games to working out, eating, or even doing homework. Video game addiction is equivalent to an alcohol or drug addiction. That bad, I know. According to the University of New Mexico, recent studies suggest that 6 to 15 percent of all gamers exhibit signs that could be characterized as addiction. Physical signs of addiction could be, but are not limited to: fatigue, extreme migraines, extensive use of lying, poor hygiene and in some extreme cases, carpal tunnel syndrome has occurred in video game addicts. Emotional signs of video game addiction are irritability when unable to play, isolation from others, thoughts about previous game play and neglecting other important health related things like eating food, brushing your teeth, washing up, changing your clothes, or sleeping. Even in some extreme cases of addiction, death or yourself and murder of friends or loved ones has occurred.
